Reasons To Be Cheerful

Reasons To Be Cheerful

claret&blue82 begs for some reasons to be cheerful:

I don't want to be too negative, I really don't. And this is not just because of the abject performance against Wigan. But I'm starting to get a little worried. Our squad last season was too small, and so far this summer we've seen Laursen (legend), Barry, Knight and Taylor go, with Delph, Downing, Beye and Marshall coming in. In terms of numbers we've stayed still, in terms of quality you could argue that we're down.

From memory, MON said he'd be looking for 5 more players before Delph, Beye and Marshall signed, that means he's looking for 2 more players. When you look at some of the squad players we have (Harewood, Shorey, Salifou, Marshall!) you would have to argue that we lack strength in depth - these players are not good enough to keep us still, let alone move on. Given this, can 2 more players really make us strong enough to compete? And there's two more things that worry me.

1, Man City, Everton, Spurs. That's 3 very strong teams, 2 of them with seemingly bottomless pots of money that we're trying to compete with just to get back into Europe (let alone any more lofty ambitions). When you add to that 'surprise packages' like Fulham and West Ham, it's going to be a very tough slog.

2, The Young news. I know it's pure speculation at the moment {and is being dismissed by the club..ed}, and I really can't see it happening but why haven't the club media men shot it out the water? I know this is very premature, but this feels ominously like the old regime.

My challenge to all Vital Villans is this - give us a reason to be optimistic. Any shred that can keep me smiling after a (so far) flat summer.

PS, I don't count the young players coming through as a reason to be cheerful as I think we'll struggle to keep them if we're not there or there abouts in the next couple of seasons (which without reinforcement will be tough).

I'm sorry guys, I had to have a rant! And to be fair to myself, I wrote that before the club poo pooed the Young story. A victory against Speedy Vienna would be one reason to smile!

to all villa fans, i would like to apologise for some foul language i used on your site yesterday, it was intended as a reaction to one person's comment to me, and not to villa fans in general, in hindsight i realise this was not the way to go about it, and apologise again for any offence caused.

Erm, how about for starters Delph wanted to join us and not Man City? We also have a manager that is held in high regard by his peers, and by rival fans (Although not by us villans right now it would appear). We have more Villa players in the England squad right now than in my living memory. We apparantly are going to get improvements to the stadium. Oh, and we can't play much worse than we did last saturday, so it has to get better, or at least the team can't play any worse than it last did. Hmm, thats a dubious last positive methinks.
