Anti depressants For Some Villa Fans????

Ladies and gentlemen, we have one. One what? An opti! Excellent post by Villan Semper Fidelis Villa:

The ice caps are melting, sea levels are rising, there is a hole in the o-zone layer, debates about global warming, war continues in Afghanistan, reports that too much processed meat is bad for you, half of UK final pension schemes in the private sector are going to close within the next three years, rising levels or personal debt, warnings regarding increased levels of repossessions if there is an interest rate rise, increasing levels of unemployment, swine flu, Smoking linked to increased brain lesions and brain shrinkage in MS; Personality type linked to risk of death among individuals with peripheral artery disease and worst of all Aston Villa have lost the first game of the season and John Carew has a sore toe.

O`Neill out

Benitez out

Moyes out

Get them all out, they are all failures, lets finish the season now.

I have read, what if O`Neill goes at Christmas, what if Villa do a Newcastle, Martin O`Neill should have done this and that - all with the benefit of hindsight I might add.

Alex Ferguson known for his mind games is clearly trying to hoodwink a section of the Aston Villa fans by saying how highly he rates Martin O`Neill in numerous reports over the years. He clearly wants Villa to keep such a useless manager, he couldn`t be telling the truth could he?

O`Neill has a proven track record, much better than the record of many of the managers people seem to want to take over at the club. Then again, opinions are normally based on who is in fashion at the time.

Thank goodness Randy Learner believes in the long game, being patient, putting his trust in someone and sticking by them even when times are tough, no surprises that he is a successful business man because of this approach is it? He has the balls to stay at the table when things are getting tricky instead of folding. No one can have that level of wealth without making difficult decisions.

I might also add that Alex Ferguson was given time by the board at Manchester United, how he rewarded them for showing faith in him.

I seem to remember a Manchester United team that lost at the start of a season - you can`t win anything with kids, well what happened there? There are still some of those kids at the club, how many medals later?

Times have changed since then, now the mega rich have entered the frame, Villa have a very wealthy owner, however his fortune is dwarfed by that of the owners of Chelsea, Manchester City, whereas Manchester United and Liverpool sell merchandise all over the world and have more income streams than Aston Villa and can attract better players because of the history of those clubs.

Do we give up? No

What Martin O`Neill seems to be doing is bringing in a wealth of talent, young, English building for the future. Villa once missed out on Robby Keane because of an extra 500k (approx 5.5m) in the Doug Ellis years, he went on to be sold for approx 13 million. These days, Villa don`t miss out on the young talent, they attract it and sign it. They want to play for Martin O`Neill.

People cry for more players, for more money, yet it`s not their money they are spending. At the same time, some of the player`s people are calling for have the option of signing for Inter Milan etc.

As much as I like Birmingham, if I had the wealth of some of these footballers and had no ties to the area I would not choose it above Milan, Madrid, Barcelona, and London. I could post if I would sign Messi, doesn`t mean it`s going to happen, in fact we all know it never would, plus I would not be accountable for it, easy to have an opinion that way. Most people on here could post a forty man squad of names, going out and doing the business is another matter.

Time - everyone wants success now without thinking what is realistic. Maybe O`Neill has created a rod for his own back by almost challenging the top four last season. I think he would want that pressure though and would embrace it.

He`s (Martin O`Neill) had 3 years - Yes, how many has Alex Ferguson had? Wenger? Villa are playing catch up. Liverpool and Chelsea also had a better infrastructure after the Doug Ellis Years. Manchester City have just spent silly money.

Then there are the General posts on this site, a director of the football club, some people are downright insulting, the people that post here are a minority amongst Aston Villa fans, let us not forget that, yet the General still takes the time out.

The General seems to have the patience of a Saint with some of the drivel that he has to read through, issues being repeated, time and time again. He knows that he will not please everyone and continues to post and answer everyone, even those that show a clear lack of respect at times.

People complain about lack of knowledge because they are from the US, people ask how much money is going to be spent, people ask for minutes from meetings, people complain about investments in the club saying they want it on the pitch even though it`s from a different budget. No matter what is done some people like to complain.

The transfer window remains open, the sounds coming from the club remain positive, maybe Doug should be brought back. Perhaps Randy should cut his losses and sell to the circus that is in charge of Liverpool.

Take one game at a time, Villa win the Peace Cup people are raving about the youngsters, Villa lose first game of the season O`Neill out etc etc etc. People can have whatever options they want on here, you`re not accountable for them, at the end of the day they are just opinions (normally with hindsight) and you will never know if you`re right or wrong because you will never be in the situation to be held accountable for them.

I for one remain positive.

Well said that man. Knee jerk reactions all round are nothing more than that. I was as depressed about the performance as the next man, but its not the end of the world. Plenty of time to get things right. Up the Villa

Semper Fidelis Villa, this is one of the single most fantastic posts I have read on Vital Villa, full of sense and reason. Some people have no patience these days. I guarantee any other fan in the top flight would want MON, I used to live in Manchester and many United and City fans would be ecstatic to have him as their next manager. I fear the boo boys could soon push MON plus some of the quality players out of the club soon, and it will be a real case of 'you don't know what you've got till it's gone'. Up the villa.

Nice to be positive, but you are forgetting one thing, this wasnt just one game, it is a contiuation of the last 4 months or last season. If you would make a form table of our last 12 matches in the PL we would be in the relagation zone! And that isnt after one game, but a third of as season. We all know that we have a weak squad, and even if MON is trying to pretend he didnt realise that until he went to a managers meeting, he is only fooling himself, or trying too. He only has 13 days to address the problem, although he has already had months to plan for it! Of course its good to be positive, but its also bad to bury your head in the sand! Incedently, Fergesson also highly rated the "walley with a brolley" and look what happened to his England team? Balance is the key, Martin should be given more time, the end of theTF window, and then until christmas, if things havent improved, then questions need to be asked!

Excellent post and many good points. I am over Saturday now. But the fact is we do not have strength in depth and we only have 13 days to sort it otherwise we will struggle and then how do we attract players in January if we are languishing near the bottom. If Davies or Cuellar break a leg or even tweak a hamstring on Thursday who do we have to defend against Torres on Monday night. Beye for his 3rd game alongside somebody he has never played central defence with and Reo-Coker/Gardener at RB. This is a desperate state of affairs to be in after 3 years.

good post. i do think MON leaves himself open to criticism on the transfer front - claiming we need a bigger squad but having the same amount of players starting the next season. However, anyone that wants him out has clearly lost the plot.

I have patience. But after experiencing 7 transfer windows now MON has yet to prove his ability to bulk up our squad and sign his targets. It's continually frustrating and annoying that time and time again we miss out and lose out on matched we should win if we fielded a half decent fit team. The team that opened against Wigan was shocking. Heskey - cant score wont score Gabi - not scored in ages- awful summer awful last 14 games for villa Shorey - gave away 1st goal Delph - out of his depth - where was Reo-Coker Friedal - too old perhaps? Beye - slow, couldnt get back Cuelleur and Davies - Hardly Laursen/Mellberg are they? they cant even communicate by other means than shouting Albrighton - 30 mins prem debut. Little early for him perhaps? It's a joke, that;s an awful team and apart from Milner and Young Id of picked everyone of Evertons or Spurs outfield players for the opening game.

Finally, VILLAINS, a sense of, well, sense! The rate people have been whinging it's as if we'd just been relegated! The window IS still open for new players, and we WILL sign more. One bad game doesn't make the whole season a failure! I can imagine everton fans and liverpool fans saying the same things.... keep the faith & it'll come good!

Nice to see some positivity but we have gone from a top 4 team last calendar year to eternal losers. Clean sheets are few and far between and the formation doesn't even look good. IMHO since we bought Heskey, the whole team is trying to revolve around him. It won't change until the stubborn one accepts his mistake in signing someone who isn't effective in our squad or todays premiership.

Great article, It has made me think...like who then IS responsible for the shambolic dealings transfer window after transfer window for the last SEVEN windows...and who then IS responsible for the dross I have been watching for the last two seasons?

Are some people stupid? There are times I think some Villa 'fans' are actually Blues fans in disguise. Why would they dog the team so much? Ask any fan of a team who finished 16th 3 or so years ago if they'd be happy finishing 10th and then 6th 2 years on the bounce, with a team of predominantly homegrown and young exciting talent, European qualification 2 years in a row and they'd answer "no." They wouldn't be happy they'd be OVER THE MOON! How short are some people's memories? When was it as good and exciting as the first half of last season to be a Villa fan regarding league performances? 92/93? Perhaps the year we were top at Christmas under Gregory? But in my view nothing compared to last year (and the end of prev season) when we were hammering some teams and playing some of the best football I've ever seen Villa play. We simply cannot walk into the CL, we dont have a divine right. And last time I checked the transfer window was still open. Yes of course I'd like us to throw money at Wheater, Distin, Van de Vaart et al - but who else is doing that?? Who have Everton bought? Or Spurs Or Fulham? Or West Ham? Or Arsenal? Who have any of our rivals bought that we would've really needed? Other than maybe Bassong (and who's to say he didn't just fancy a move to London and Spurs over us - is that really such a shock?) Exactly! All these fans that say Mon's inept tactically and in the transfer market will be devasted if he gets fed up with all the negativity and leaves. And when we get Avram Grant or Alan Curbishley and start finishing mid table every year these message boards will be full of people wishing MON would come back. And as for the booing - it's a disgrace. Sometimes I am truly ashamed to be a Villa fan. Is it a surprise we won a fantastic 10 games away last year but struggled at home with some of the support the players get sometimes? How many of you would perform better down at 5 a side, playing squash or even FIFA 09 on PS3 if you we being booed? Shorey getting jeered in the car park?? What's that all about? He plays for the Villa!! If he ends up being left back all season what possibly benefit is there to boo him? What does it solve? Nothing. It just makes him more nervous and more worried about making a mistake. Which just makes errors more and more likely. That's why we constantly struggle at home, not just because of the counter attacking style we play on the road. We NEED to support the boys no matter what cos that's the only way it will get better. The players need to relax and feel confident and they just don't at VP. And haven't for as long as I can remember. Mark my words - we have it good. Very bloody good. Memories are too short, some fans are too fickle (and just stupid). Randy or Gen Krulak if you are reading this please understand that 99% of Villa fans love you both and Martin dearly. Ignore the minority who have forgotten what it's like to have Mark Kinsella, Oy$vind Leonharson and Colin Calderwood in the team. The ones who have obviously forgotten about when we were a laughing stock. Most of my mates who don't support Villa think we are fantastic. In fact we are many of theirs second team. However the are all united in 1 view - some of our fans who boo 5 mins into a brand new season should wake up and smell the coffee.

I for two remain positive! That said this is a forum and a place where I wish to express my views whether I see them differing from the direction taken by Martin O' Neill and Randy Lerner or from those expressed directions by other fans. My main points at the moment. 1) Young talent is fantastic but the best way to develop young talent is for older players to nurture them/ play alongside them/ share experience 2) I'd disagree with a lot of comments about spending big (I see soccer clubs as being a business and think the huge debts that other clubs are accruing as being a sign of mis-management). 3) I believe the decision to get rid of Zat Knight was a great one - Time and time again he, I feel, has shown that he is not at the calibre that villa need. 4.5m was more than I could have wished for him. 4) Yes we need options (personally I would only see these as being in defence) 5) 10m for Bent was a missed oppurtunity 6) It's a big jump from Leeds in League One to playing in premiership and even more so when you are 18. Starting Delph was a bad mistake! Hope he comes on of course and fills MON's faith! 7) I think the world of NRC and would like to see him play more and in the center. Would like to see Sidwell get a run in the team! 8) I think Heskey and Carew as a strike force would be ideal for milner and young crosses 9) Agbonglahor needs time and composure - still young, definitely a little inexperienced but has shown good form at start of last year! 10) I'm happy with MON but would like more Center Halves! [2+] and feel we need them (especially as I am unsure of the capabilities of Cuellar)

Great article> There will some that whinge. Unfortunately some like to destruct rather than be constructive. Jonah being a good example. Apparently two 6th place finishes, considering the starting position M'ON took over, is a shambles. There are huge question marks at the moment. But that is all they are, question marks. The top managers come up wth the answers. M'ON invariably has produced answers, albeit with some mistakes, since he has been with us.

And some like voiceoftheholte will continue too wear their rose tinted glasses whilst sitting watching MON's tactical ineptitude and hoof it to the big man up front week after week. A positivite and sensible outlook at last. Yes our squad is small, but players can't be bought off the shelf. I am sure that had we bought Ronaldo and Kaka this summer, someone would still complain that we should have bought Messi as well. Keep the faith. UTV \o/

Positive post Villa will win 5-0 at Anfield next game , there I feel much better . I feel sorry for you if you really believe all that , you clearly didn't watch the last 17 games ! You clearly haven't noticed how weak our squad is. If you think the reaction was to one game you are clearly out of touch with the fan in the stands ! .

O'Neill has apparently metamorphosed into marmite. Villa fans seem to be truly divided on the man. I am unashamedly in the camp that has come to believe that the man is a blundering buffoon, but as I always say, my personal opinion is irrelevant. I believe that Lerner is going to stick with O'Neill, as he believes that he's the right man for the job, and I don't think he'd be swayed by a fans revolt - not that such a thing looks likely given the blind faith many seem to have in O'Neill. It may well be that our best hope is that O'Neill resigns, but who can see him doing that? Those who believe that O'Neill simply needs time will get their wish, and we'll all see what happens. Personally, I can't take my eyes off it. This truly is car-crash entertainment!

roni_spurs, you know not of what you speak, which is a little surprising. I'd have thought a Spurs fan would have taken a keen interest in a team who seemed destined to dump the hated Arsenal out of the top four last season. Just to fill you in, we imploded in the final third of last season, lost our best and longest serving player in the summer, not to mention the real Mighty Martin (Laursen), and have replaced the former with a part-time dj from the north-east (how happy you must be to havde dodged THAT bullet), and the latter with... er, no-one. But never fear, because we've bought a 19 year old from the third tier of English football whom our manager and captain seem to believe is our saviour! So then, just one game...

Well written, thoughtful article. However, Martin O'Neill is not Alex Ferguson. Playing 4-4-2, when the teams best form was playing 4-5-1 defies belief. Not knowing how many players started for you last season is unbelievable. Wenger knows how many blades of grass his players cover per match, how many glasses of water they drink per week. MON is from the Cloughie school of management. Motivation not tactics. Trouble is, its decades out of date. Nobody ever seems to mention N.Forest's long decline in the 80's, and beyond, because of BC's blinkered approach. There is a huge black hole in the current Villa side where a football brain should be, no imagination, no plan B, C, or D. There also seems to be a lamentable lack of urgency in the transfer market. Does MON stand for "Monitoring Observing Nobody"? How long does it take a reasonable manager to watch a player, decide they are right for the club, and sign them?

Hi, I'm a spurs fan & came across here to read this article thinking it was gonna be more of the same stuff you always hear from villa fans, sack MON etc. But this is a genuinely good article, filled with common sense, and however wrote it is a credit to your club. MON is one of the best managers in europe, me and the rest of the supporters of other teams can't believe how fickle you lot can be. If you want MON gone, you won't have too much trouble getting rid, half the teams in europe would jump at the chance to have a manager of that quality. I know the transfer situation hasn't been great, fair do's... but I think what most people find hard to believe is that you villa fans look at your squad list & say to yourselves "we should be challenging for top 4". Why? Your squad is terrible, just as it was last season. The players, with MON at the helm, massively overachieved & for that they deserve credit, not being hung out to dry when subsequently, the frailty of the squad is exposed. You do have some real quality tho... Agbon, Young, Carew. Who brought those players to the club? Unless I'm mistaken, MON. If you're gonna finsih top 4, it's gonna take another season of miracle working on a shoestring from your manager & players. Get behind them & cheer up a bit, as this very good article points out, the transfer window hasn't shut yet, you might even be taking bentley & jenas off us, maybe even hutton, 3 real quality players. You've done well to hold onto Young, you might make some signings before the window shuts. Realise who it is that put you put you back where you are now, a top 6 side challenging for honours, after year of mediocrity... it's a bad start, that's all.

* And of course James Milner (brought in by MON), who was excellent in the 2nd half for england the other night against holland!

he was brought in by MON and is excellent, however he did play at right-back the other day, as do other midfielders.... Point is jaysta, I read a lot on Vital Spurs about wanting Martin Jol out, to the outsider I couldn't understand that and things seeem to have gone downhill since his departure. What I'm saying is footie splits decisions, not just at Villa, everywhere... long may that continue, be boring if it didn't!
