Monny Surprised To End Of Season Numbers

Martin O'Neill has said he was slightly surprised after seeing stats about player usage last season.

Admitting on the official site that last week he went to a meeting for managers and was told that Villa only used 17 players all season, whilst other clubs had used over 23.

This has made him determined to add to the squad and adopt more of a rotational policy...possibly more rotational than we heard when he talked about rotation at the start of last season you would presume.

'I was a wee bit surprised. I knew how many we had used but I didn't realise was less than anyone else.

'It's a team game. We are trying to get some extra players in if we can and in our own way, we're hoping to look after the players.

'There's a long way to go. This is a game for all of us - it's going to be a long season ahead.

'From the performance against Wigan, we've got a lot to do.'

How this fits with news today of a possible Luke Yung transfer to Hull (adding strength to rumours over the last week) I don't know.

We knew we were desperately short last season, and so far we are no better in the numbers/experience department. The promotion of hopefuls like Bannan, Albrighton, Clark etc look very nice on paper, Marc aside, you wouldn't expect to see them in the league too often so although obviously they will help tiredness in Cup games, there still aren't many options for rotation in the league itself - or at half time for example.

There's definitely a lot to do.

We all agree this is a P**s take of a situation, but give him time. hes done 7 things right and 3 things wrong, THAT 4 US IS PROGRESSION

This is a very poor situation to be in at the start of a new season, and quite understandable that people want him to leave, I agree, I don't think MON is up to speed anymore, he's ***** poor in the transfer market, he's clueless infact, we need more urgency in the market, spurs get Bassong we get beye, to buy downing with an injury is ridiculous, and a player from league 1, come on the man needs to go, simple

You lost your two best players and replaced them with an injured winger says it all really. Two weeks to go and I don't see any big rabbits to be honest.

Give the guy time? What a joke, he has had 4 years, and we are still hearing the 'small squad' excuse rolled out after each and every match. The guy is a prat and the sooner he leaves the better so we can concentrate on getting in the numbers needed to compete

Personally I think that we've once again completely missed the boat when it comes to adding numbers, and more importantly quality, to this vastly undermanned squad. Surely its way too late into the transfer window to expect clubs to be ready and willing to offload their better players, knowing full well that the chances of them being able to replace them, is virtually zilch. Things are hardly helped of course by the very fact that Mart has clearly stated that he will not pay over the odds for anyone, which unfortunately, due to circumstances, has been the name of the game this summer. Sorry Mart, but you're not going to pick up the genuine quality performers that we so desperately need, at bargain knock down prices. We should have had the new arrivals on board by the time the lads returned to Bodymoor Heath for pre-season, it isn't as though we were caught unawares at the last minute as to our urgent needs. I'm happy enough with the signings of Stewart Downing and Fabian Delph, I certainly have no complaints on that score, while I dont know enough about, nor have I seen enough, of Habib Beye to form an educated opinion, but you cant help thinking that those signings are simply way too few to improve the squad, and set us up for the task of competing on four fronts. Another transfer window wasted? Sadly I have to think so. One thing is for certain. Mart hadn't better see fit to use the small squad excuse once September 1st rolls around. I'm afraid its an excuse that is bound to infuriate the supporters, supporters to who that statement is now well past its sell-by date.

Past its sell by date could be attributed to more than one thing at the club GS.

The ability to draw on strength in depth is key to teams which operate at the Top 6 level in the Premiership. Villa obviously did very well last season, but the fact that they started to slip in the second half of the campaign can almost entirely be put down to the fact the first team squad was so small. It seems to me O'Neill knows exactly what to do to put that right. But it will take money.
