Is It Right To Boo Your Own Team?!

Just had a poll suggestion through which makes sense to ask now after the weekend's booing at half and full time v Wigan.

johnproche suggested:

Is it ever right to boo your team/manager?

Yes, if they've been bad all season
Yes, after a few bad games
Sometimes in poor one off games
Unsure, I don't but understand why some do
No, young players can be demoralised
Absolutely not, the crowd is the 12th man
On the fence..boooo!

The poll result from Mike Field aka 'so nothing changes':

Wigan MisMan of the Match

Milner 35%
Sidwell 31%
Friedel 12%
Delph 4%
Petrov 4%
Delfouneso 3%
Shorey 2%
Young 2%
Heskey 2%
Agbonlahor 1%
Albrighton 1%
Beye 1%
Davies 1%
Cuellar 1%

Villa v Wigan (back to business!) will:

5% got it right saying a loss, 9% a draw and 86% predicted a win!

not keen on booing, especially IN games (this weekend that didn't happen). I didn't boo but can see why so many did, it was a shambles and the manager and players had to be made aware I guess that we were all/mostly all were not happy at all.

Cant stand the booing and a large section of fans booing after matches last season made us look stupid. But Saturday was a total shambles, sometimes fans need to be given something to cheer.

I'll never boo. Not my own team. But it was shocking.

I'm a Wigan fan and booing your own team is just stupid and can only make things worse... MON certainly doesn't deserve to be booed you are very lucky to have him as your manager

I couldn't make it to the first game of the season (... and by all accounts i'm glad i missed it!) Now don't get me wrong, booing is not for me, but I can understand it. and my point on the booing is this:- If you pay your hard earnt cash and you're not happy with what you get for it, you should have every right to complain. I'm guessing here, but i think most of the booing was probably aimed at MON and maybe not the the players, after all, most of the negativity on these forums is about MON and his insistance on 4-4-2 and his lack of transfer activity and his belief that arguably our best midfielder is also our best right back. etc etc. I was quietly optimistic before the season started, and i STILL am, one bad game does not make for a bad season. Keep the faith my fellow villans!!

On the flip side, after a good win, are all those who booed going to be willing to stand and applaud and sing for 20mins or so, ala Kop fans, or rush out to beat the traffic ? Its easy to boo and slag your team off, but how many give real credit when its due?

Sure, with certain limitations. Don't boo every game, certainly not during the game, but if you're unhappy with the way your squad is playing, what other chance do you get to communicate this directly to the board, the manager, and the team?

I don't agree with booing because it puts more pressure on the players on the pitch, not to make any mistakes. Its the same with sarcastic jeers at players if they do something wrong. We should get behind our team and cheer from start to finish! I can see why some fans booo though and after the match on saturday there wasn't much to cheer about. MON knows this as stated in his interviews, i just hope the message sinks in and he buys some commanding players at the back and in the midfield. We lacked leadership and i don't think petrov helped, Reo coker should of started instead of delph aswell. Delph was kind of dropped in the deep end to swim with sharks this weekend. I think MON thought he would have an ashely young impact immediatley. I still feel he will come good and be a quality addition! Just hope MON sorts it out before our next match :) UTV

Its pure frustration. We need quality and we obviously dont have it. The fans can see this so why hasnt MON replaced our 2 most influencial players??? Yes we all love MON and villa bla bla bla. But no1 has a passion for the club like the fans. When we dont like something we react

In 40 years of going to VP I've never advocated booing but Saturday's performance was so dismal I can fully understand and sympathise with the fans' reaction. MON, we've been telling you for the past three months - we need a commanding ch to replace Laursen, a midfield playmaker and a solid left back. And get a move on, mate - we've got the scousers in a week's time ffs!

If nothing happens, you do nothing. If something good happens, the natural reaction is to clap and cheer. If something bad happens, you show your displeasure by booing! I think people read too much into the crowd's reaction at the end of a game when we have lost. So people boo, so what? It's just an expression of displeasure. Personally, I tend to just hang my head and walk away.

well theres 2 ways to look at it im a mechanic and if i do somthink wrong to a customers vehicle i will get booo'ed buy the customer/managment of the company, i dont get paid a great deal but i have to accept this telling off/boooing on the chin and put what ever i have done wrong right and get on with my job so if todays players at any level who get paid 20 - 80,000 pounds a week to do there job and we as fans pay our hard earned cash to go and watch play terible (like we did on sat) then i personly think we have a rite to boo how else can we get our feelings across?? but im not saying that every time someone miss places a pass misses a chance they should be booed because this will do nothink for moral and confidance or like a game last season(carnt remember who we played) when we peppered the side for 90 mins and just couldnt score that booing is acceptable but when they go out look half harted/not interested and are just generaly shocking then maybe they should boooo'ed so they can understand how disapointed paying fans are!!!!

i booed , now i love mon but the fact in our fourth season we have not got a squad that can compete on 2/3 fronts let alone at home to wigan, we were s**t, it was unnaceptable, and so was selling knight with no immediate replacement. its the second time ive done it and on both times i think it was justified, if the club expect us to pay 3.30 for a pint then i expect a performance of some sort, football we all agree is about money now, so why should it stop when it gets to the fans. look i want martin here for ever, but he has to get a squad assembled quickly, sign players mon ffs.

^^^^ What a load of crap. So where you expecting everybody to applaude and chant 'We love you Villa' at the end of the game? You obviously don't attend many matches then. The team need to know if they were *****. I didn't boo on Sat as it was the 1st game of the season, and to be honest I'm used to the poor home form. I did boo after the Stoke and Spurs games last season, because they fully deserved it.

3 wins in 18 league games = championship form. Thats the reality and Monny knows it and even said we were well within our right to sound our frustrations. Booing shows that we care and we expect more determination and effort. There have been times were we have been played off the park and we have applauded the opposition, the effort of the Villa side and accepted we were second best. With football moving on so quickly year on year it's like a year long continuous season, and our form is worrying. The issue needs to be pin pointed, be it Barry/Laursen, tactics or formation or a lack of confidence, before the crisis at Villa articles get published and we end up bottom half after 10 games... Maybe I'm jumping the gun a little - it's not panics stations yet - but if the slide continues the boos on Saturday will be a flash in the pan. The fans did their best to lift the players, the players didnt respond. In my opinion the fans were better than players...

im 100% behind mon and the team, im booing cuz it a p**ss take 4 me in 1 area only, TRANSFERS , now i actually think mons signings have mostly been good, however 4 some reasons and this is why i booed, someone at villa park thinks its ok to go into the 4th season with a squad nowhere near big enough to compete. Right up untill we sold zat, even after the end of last season i still thought we could qualify for the CL. But honestly im at a loose ends as to why we are in this position squad wise. in mon we trust, but come on martin spend some money,

Astonian - at what point did it become okay for fans to show that they wanted old Deadly out? Fans have a right to express their views. Unless MON is going to start having an open Q&A after games the only way to get the message over is from the terraces. Booing during games helps no-one except the opposition and I'm glad to say it didn't happen on saturday, but booing after the game is simply a way of conveying a message to the manager and players that we expect more. I didn't boo as I was already on the way out - the only time I have left a game early in 25 years!

I dont think booing during a match is constructive. It reminds me of Capello's comments after the England v. Holland game. When England were losing 2-0 at half time he didnt shout at them as all expected. He was calm to instill confidence in them, and he was confident they could turn the game around, and they did. If at the end of the game they had not drawn or won, and if they had not followed his instruction, then he would have gotten angry. But while there was a game to be won, he didnt shout. That is the same booing. I didnt see all the game, but from what I read it was our worst performance for years. I can understand the fans frustration, but I think its better to boo at the end. Secondly, I am sure the booing was 90% for MON. For all the reasons fans dont like him at the moment. Not addressing the squad numbers, pigheadedly insisting on 4-4-2 with Heskey that has never worked. Wasting our best mid-fielder at right back, etc etc. I like MON, especially as a person, but if he doesn't change how he is managing the team, I don't think he should be given much longer than this season. If we are out of Europe, out of both cups, lower half of the PL, its time to say thanks, and goodbye! Its as "simples" as that!
