Carew Took The Decision To Pull Out

Martin O'Neill is quoted in an article by Mathew Kendrick of the Birmingham Mail (Bill Howell has moved to another team, we've not got the ever great (!) Lisa Smith and Mathew Kendrick covering Villa) that it was John Carew's decision to pull out on Saturday.

I'm not one for conspiracy theories but this one had rumbles to it .... there is no way the player/medical staff etc wouldn't have had an early fitness test for the player if he as a doubt. If it was a pull or strain before the game fine, these things happen, but if JC's foot was that bad, it wouldn't / shouldn't have been a last minute decision. Wonder if the same decision would have been made if he'd been a starter? Only asking...!

MON said the Doc had told him about JC's sore toe but they thought he'd be ok, otherwise he'd not have been on the team sheet.

He added he was hoping he could be used if needed (and boy oh boy was he needed!) 'But obviously John thought his foot was sore enough not to be able to take his place. It will always be the player’s decision eventually, absolutely.....I was hoping he’d be able to play, I was aware of the injury, but I abide by the player’s decision.'

He says they'll asses the injury this week. Carew meanwhile said he had an infection in his toe and it was sore so he felt he couldn't play. Did he only just notice in warm up then? This is all madness!

Anyway, he is hoping for a miraculous recovery from this most heinous of injuries in time for Thursdays interflora game v Rapid Vienna..... which is nice.

Such a shame. He did this before the Ajax game, he did this before the Moscow game..... he's done it again. We need him in the team, fully fit, fully focused and banging them in, the other strikers aren't half the talent he is.

Definately confirmed he didn't storm off as some are saying by the way. He was there at the end of the game.

Why wasn't he starting to then come off if it felt bad??? Surely they trained in the morning or day before and everyone knew. WTF is the point of bringing him on as a sub to break down and have to be subbed off again 5 mins later?? Why did Gabby start when the fat B'stard has had bugger all preseason. We know Heskey brings an apple every day for Sir so he was the first name on the teamsheet. Are we going to have our dismal spell in the first 15 games this year and try to catch up with fourth place the other way round?

Those of you speculating on the seriousness of the injury and procedures for assessing his ability to play are showing that you haven't an understanding of competitive sports teams and sports injuries. It's quite simple to deduct that; (a) Carew has a painful toe injury (b) In the doctor's opinion, the injury is not something that can be made worse if he plays on it, if the pain can be tolerated. (c) Carew was desperate to play/be involved and MON wanted him involved - probably not as a starter due to the injury AND the fact that he played 90 minutes on Wednesday night. (d) He wanted to play badly and was willing to play through the pain and probably kidded himself that he could manage it. (e) He warmed up and at that stage realized that it was too painful and that he wouldn't be able to play. (f) He didn't "limp off" as some of you clearly feel he should have done, because the injury only becomes painful with the increased pressure/flexion when running and turning at pace. (g) The body language and facial expressions of many on the bench were due to either not playing in the first game (NRC, Sidwell etc.) or the fact that we had lost a key player at the last minute (MON, Walford). I can't remember the last time I saw any of our other coaches smile, so I won't include them. (h) Like ALL good coaches I've ever met, MON evaluates injuries based on the trust of two criteria - medical expertise (club doctor) and the player himself. NOW LET'S STOP OVERREACTING TO THIS AND GET BACK TO MOANING ABOUT THE FACT THAT WE NEED A CENTRE-BACK!!!

gmvillan, people question O'Neill because he apparently inhabits his own little fantasy world that is only barely attached to the world we believe to be real. I'm not ruling out the possibility that O'Neill is blessed with an almost supernatural insight that allows him to perceive the true reality, whilst the rest of us are left to either doubt him or blindly trust in him, but I'm certainly not about to embrace it. Maybe when judgement day comes I will bow down before the Mighty Martin (Power Ranger). Who knows??

Albarnista - mine was not a defence of anyone - merely a point made to try and stop people from creating some big deal out of very little and taking focus away from the real issues at hand like the fact that the spine of our team is awful right now......
