Villa Fan Asks 'Is It Right To Feel This Way!'

Right, I am 46 years old with the 'standard' 2 children and a wife, a middle of the road house and car and a life in suburbia. Lots going on in my life, getting kids to rugby training, tennis lessons, going to the gym,having the odd pint, going to mates for barbecues etc all very normal run of the mill activities.
I am fortunate to have a job which I relatively enjoy that pays ok so why on the third day of my annual leave do I feel extremely frustrated and angry?
Football, that is the reason. I seriously thought that I had got over this bug sometime ago, that I was ambivalent to how Villa got on, after all there are so many other concerns in life, the lads in Afghanistan dying daily, the people losing their jobs and not knowing where the next penny is coming from, starvation in nations around the world
However, this morning I have regressed to the days in my late teens and twenties where Villa, their results and performances, seemed to be the most important and determining factors in my life (No wonder my College performance was below par). It hurt and it hurt so much, little coverage apart from the radio, and the papers, but in those days I could get to VP much more often and could see for myself, get the drug as it was. I am not alone in this I am sure.
The last 15 years or so, my wife will support me on this, we have lost , I have sworn and moved on, life has been back to normal maybe after 30 minutes or so.
However, whether the internet has impacted, or Sky coverage or whatever, but I have definitely got that feeling back where, I am angry, have not slept well , woken up and got straight on here to look to see if there are strong links to much needed players, is there an apology for yesterdays totally inept performance? I doubt it.
Is football, and more importantly Villa that important? Should I just shrug my shoulders and move on? The wife would prefer that, even taking time to gloat about Arsenals performance whilst telling me I need to 'grow up' and not to go back 'to how you used to be'.
To be honest I am pleased I have found the passion again, I am pleased it hurts when we lose (a feeling I want to experience less and less) and I want to feel the unbridled joy when we win, to carry that feeling through the whole of the next week.
I am sure I am not alone and a lot of the discussions/disagreements and arguments on this forum stem from hundreds of people who feel the same way I do........and long may it continue.....sorry Mrs FL !

Yea I echo that whole story, It feels like my heart was ripped out yesterday, the burning sensation of the Big Kick Off and the team SO UNDERPERFORMED!!!!
But as you say, lets write that fecker off and move along, after all we got Europe and Red Scouse next, it must get better surely? Wont it, PLease??????

Great read, I feel that guilt too about why does it mean so much when surely other things are far more important, however it does, and it hurts more now because it seemed such a new dawn a few years ago and it isn't turning out as well as it seemed it would, and so frustrating because the reasons are so bl**dy obvious to most of us

Brilliant. Its all so true. But now I'm older the performace matters more if we play well and lose I can accept that, but bad performances really hurt.

Fatloser - excellent, I so empathise. I never used to take that much interest in the transfer window until the advent of Sky Sports and the internet, now I check for news three or four times a day!

johnmurphy3112 makes a good point about the 'performance' aspect. you want the team to get out there and play. the other thing is because of the amount of info available now via the web, you get more involved, no matter how truthful or not it may be, it sparks a reaction....

i check the internet every half an hour if i can and i go mental when i watch the villa. i am scared to go to the pub to watch a game now because against my will i am likely to go nuts. i was down the pub for the everton game last season and i will never return to that pub. i love it but at the same time i hate it.

Excellent, ric112, it is actually embarrassing how much it can take over your life, totally insane really, but can't stop being a Villa fan, if you try to explain it to someone who doesn't like football they look at you with a touch of sadness and genuine concern

I know how you feel ,Villa broke my heart again on saturday. They usually do it later in the season but after waiting three months for my taste of Villa I'm starting to wonder if they will ever keep a promise. I'm sick of hearing about players we are going to buy and dont want to know till their signed.

Fatloser, its not unusual to have these feelings after the FA Cup against Chelsea when Villa were not even at the match I can honestly say I was absolutely and honestly gutted for months and months afterwards. Even after the new season had started I was still absolutely gutted from the FA Cup final. Even now as I type the feeling of depression is ascending over me.... SUMO.

How do you explain these feelings. I went to see U2 on Saturday brilliant concert best ever etc but all the way through the night I was feeling I would have enjoyed it more had we won.

What pains me is that O'Neill blames "tiredness" for our woes. It's the start of the season ffs!

I remember many years ago watching the Villa win at Craven Cottage. A Fulham fan near me commented, 'It's only football, not exactly the most important thing in the world.' (Fans were not segregated in those days). Another Villa fan retorted that for 90 minutes on a Saturday afternoon it should be the most important thing in the world. When we win I am depressed; when we win I am elated. And those feelings last until our next game. For people who do not understand, I cannot explain it; for those who do, no explanation is necessary.

Spot on fatloser, it spoils the whole of my weekend when the villa lose yet it's the best weekend in history if we win. I was at a friends wedding on Saturday and spent the whole service listening to the unwashed on BRMB. It was the best day of my friends life but i just couldn't be happy for him as i was that gutted we'd lost, that and the fact he's a dirty nose !

6th place is actually now looking rather favourable... what chance do we have. Friedal is passed it, shorey is average at best and cost us our 1st goal, Beye looked slow, Carlos and Curtis CANNOT play together, there's no leader. No flare in midfield, Delph was out of his depth, Petrov poor and failed to battle against Wigans bigger lads, Heske y - what the most over-rated striker in the Prem?! Get him in defence he'd better at that!

Beye looked slow?? He had more pace than I thought he had however he was a bit slow in reading the game.

Not just the one-off game, but it was the final thing to convince me that under O’Neil we’ll never win anything, simply because of his useless transfer policy. I said at the time that January was our big chance to see if we’d become a massive club again, 4th place was there for the taking. But while Arsenal were buying Arshavin and getting players back from injury, we bought Heskey. And not only that, we changed a winning formation to fit Heskey in. Honesly, words fail me. Life’s too short to have our weekends ruined by footy, so I’m taking a back seat now until O’Neil’s gone. I’m now a hibernating, dormant Villa fan 

I never realy paid much attention to the match on Saturday due to being busy. But i was totally gutted by the performance, and more importanly by the result. I did feel better when i found out we'd not beaten Wigan in the premiership at VP at all. With that in knowledge i think they taught us a lesson on proffesionalism. They turned up and rolled their sleeves up and got on with the job. We just rolled over and let them take us easily. I did read today that MON has now opened his eyes up and realised without Laursen and Barry being replaced, we will struggle. They were the spine to Villa and with out them we are there for the taking. Wake up Villa else Liverpool will give us a hiding again.
