Sunday's Aston Villa Press Talk

Ok, lets keep this brief, all talk and no action makes for a very full transfer window!

According to the Sunday Express Manchester City and Everton are now interested in supposed Villa target - Spurs David Bentley. The report says they are willing to pay 9m for him. Villa were again linked yesterday: Saturday's Press Talk - Click Here

Another said to be on our radar is now - according to the Mail on Sunday - being chased by Arsenal. Non other than Real Madrid midfielder Rafael van der Vaart who might be set for a 6m move. His agent was quoted the other day that if Real Madrid won't use him, they need to let him leave on a free! Don't think it works like that, just ask Marlon Harewood, Villa's No9 who gets nowhere near the bench let alone the first team!

The link Friday was to Manchester City defender Richard Dunne: (Click Here) but the 29-year-old says despite the speculation, he has a 3-year contract and City and intends to stay. He told the Daily Star 'Nothing has been said to me about leaving the club,' adding that he is happy and the times are good at City. 'I've heard that Aston Villa, Spurs, Sunderland, Arsenal and Stoke are all interested in me and that is very flattering, but I'll continue to do my best for the club until I'm told otherwise.'

The Mail On Sunday return to the link to Blackburn defender Stephen Warncok and say we are 'weighing up' a 7million bid. Reports the other day suggested we'd had a 4m bid rejected but I think that was press talk, I don't think we'd have been daft enough to insult Blackburn going in that low?

The report claims that Randy might insist on fringe players like Nicky Shorey, Nigel Reo-Coker and Luke Young sold before any moves are made. Unless we are in financial trouble - and I don't believe we are in financial trouble at all - there is no way he'd be forcing the manager to make sales, that said having seen how angry Hokey-Cokey was yesterday about being on the bench and a kid being preferred over him when subs were made, I'd not be shocked if the talk of him being unhappy and wanting out are true.

The News of the World say that Fulham will offer Brede Hangeland improved terms (they claim 50,000 a week) to try to get him to sign an extended deal. Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool, Everton and Aston Villa have all been linked.

Personally I think we should sell more players before getting in adequate replacements, seemed to work well yesterday (unhappy / angry emoticon)

I feel sorry for hokey-cokey. Hasn't really had a bad game for us. Solid and consistent no matter where O'neil has stuck him. I'll be very annoyed if he leaves. On the subject of being in financial trouble, thats complete bull... We have a very rigid wage structure, so its not wages that are killing us. We historically have been the only side in the premier league that has balanced their books on transfers... So if we are struggling for money I would love to know why!

I agree, let's sell Carew, Petrov and Young before signing Muzzy Izzet, Steve Guppy and Emile Heskey. Oh, sorry, forgot we'd already signed the last one. On the subject of NRC, personally I couldn't care less if he left. Let's be honest, he's a donkey! Can't pass to save his life. When he gets the ball, if there's nobody within 10 yards of him he panics. All he can do is tackle, and that usually results in a booking. That's why Delph started, because NRC is $h!te and MON knows it.

How come we spend basically 20m on two players, a spanish player who doesn't even play for his country and a young English championship player... Yet we don't pay 15m for one of the best defenders in the premiership (Hangeland). We also desperately need Van Daar Vart, place 10m on him and give him the wages required to sign up straight away, then we have two excellent players and probably a step up from injured Laursen and Slow non creative Barry, two players who will surely change our fortunes for the better.

Looking at yesterdays performance, we needed NRC to add a bit of bite to the middle, something we desperately lacked, two years ago he had second most tackles in the league, yes he's headless at times but you cant knock his commitment, but he will get you the ball. As for the defence, well as has been said many times on these pages, we have been woeful in the transfer market and I am sick of us buying players from the lower teams or teams being relegated, for example shorey, cant pass, cant tackle and is like a small boy lost, out of his depth and should have been out the door last seasons end. The centre halves are too lightweight(message to davis) stop wafffling in the press and villa web site, get back on the training pitch and learn your trade, you have the talent to be very goon indeed but you are letting it pass you by. I dont believe we lack funds to buy players so lets go get solid mobile centre halves like Upson, Hangeland(who we should have landed January) and someone like Vagner Loveupfront , who posseses everything Gabby does not ( we could have had Bent in january too, the kids scores goals!) Ultimately if we dont buy some class is going to be a long season and I am dreading the Blues game already.

After yesterdays results/performances, who are Hangeland and VdV going to want to move too, the Villa or Arsenal? No brainer really. Before yesterday they might have been persuaded by Villa. Not now! Arsenal looked like also-rans two days ago, now they look like they're trying to assemble a title winning squad. Arsene knows, they say in N.London. Mon clearly doesn't. Ok, it's only paper talk but why is the Villa apparently offering 7 mil for Warnock, but not prepared to offer six mil for VdV. Without quality world class players like Hangeland and VdV, AVFC are finished this season (already). The club has had plenty of time to acquire VdV and Hangeland. Both are perfect replacements for Laursen and Barry, and better than Downing, Beye and even Delph. 09/10 is going to be a long old season.

Is Kuke Young a fringe player? Hardly. 6m for VDV? Surely that's a typo error - 16m is nearer the mark?

Firstly i have to say Wigan were very strong today & were obviously out to impress Martinez so will no doubt be in their honeymoon period right now just as we were when MON came. Secondly we had a very different side out... different even to the pre season side in the Peace cup.... & that for me was the difference... Wigan were well drilled, solid & new each others game much more than we did & i believe that was down to really poor pre season preparations.... I don't mean in the Peace cup or that taking part in that was in any way a bad thing, what i mean rather, is that we had players out yesterday who hadn't even played for Villa in pre season.... Agbonlahor & Fonz were given extended breaks so this was in effect their 1st game for us this term.... Petrov had been injured so can't have been match sharp, Beye has hardly had time to meet his new teamates so this was his 1st game too & of course Delph has only played once for us & again never alongside Petrov due to his injury. In short this was bound to have the effect of us being somewhat loose & lacking sharpness as the team out there had a lot of new partnerships & players yet to get their sharpness. Unfortunately we played a Wigan team who had a much better drilled & more cohesive side out due to better pre season preparations. Thirdly.. I feel MON is partly but not entirely to blame for this. He had no choice in giving Agbonlahor & fonz extra time due to their Under 21's call ups.. Martin had no choice with that but it did mean they were not involved in our pre season games..... He could do nothing about Petrov's injury which must mean he is a little behind in match sharpness. He could do nothing about losing 3 players to England duty which again must have affected preparations for the Wigan game. He could however have signed players a bit earlier in the transfer window to enable them to gel better in time for the seasons start. He could also have stuck with some of the side who did so wonderfully well in pre season & made us look very solid i.e Guzan, NRC, Albrighton & Carew (although of course carew was injured). Those players had just beaten Porto & Juventus for goodness sake so considering the amount of disruption surely it would have been safer to show a bit of faith in those who had earned it rather than putting in players who were not quite prepared properly.. AFTERALL IS NOT OUR CLUB MOTTO EXACTLY THAT?!! ..... PREPARED!!

100% correct, bringing players in early allows them to gell in pre-season, MON always shops late and it never works, these players never start to perform (if ever) until the following season, yet he never learns. This bit is his fault entirely you either learn or you leave.

I think we should have gone 4-5-1. gabby obviously wasnt fit so Heskey upfront and protect our midfield play milner and young on the wings, petrov and coker holding midfield then even sidwell or delph in attacking midfield. I think when we have such a weak defence, we need the midfield their to support them and we just didnt have it. There will be better days, there will be worse days, lets just see how villa fight back.

Did he actually play 4-5-1 at any stage pre-season!! I honesly thing VDV, Upson, Hangelaand are unrealistic and I am not unfortunatley scaling down the players I think we can get. Thinking 2 CBs and a creating midfielder/striker and I come up with the Boro three - Huth, Wheater and Tuncay!! I cant see us doing much better than those 3 to be honest!!

4-5-1 suits us, but we will only ever play 4-4-2, we only played 4-5-1 due to a shortage of strikers at the beginning of last season, so MON stubbled on this by accident, this is the scariest thing even though that worked and 4-4-2 has not, we will continue to play 4-4-2 until we get injuries up front again, then we will play 4-5-1, we will win and as soon as Heskey is fit again we will revert to 4-4-2, again it is a learning thing, 4-4-2 is great if you have world class centre mids, we do not

We desperately need a new left back and 2 central defenders! It's got desperate now, so just pay over the odds for Warnock, Distin and Upson. Exploiting Pompey & West Hams poor finances and need to sell. For a bit of midfield creativity why not go for Niko Kranjar? Again Pompey need the cash. We should have got Darren Bent, after watching how ineffective Heskey and Gabby were yesterday (and 2nd half of last season) we still desperatley need a proven scorer. At 2-0 down I had no confidence that either of them could do the business up front and really cause problems. Of course we'll no doubt end up with Richard Dunne and that's it, keep playing heskey over Carew, stubbornley stick to 4-4-2 and when we need to chase a game move our most effective winger to fullback!! Unless do some serious business in the next few weeks (as always too late in the window) I'll lose all confidence.

Sorry deano but thats the thinking that got us into this mess. If we aren't prepared to pay top players to come join us, we are gonna end up buying the cut price shorey, beye, etc of the world. Look at spurs, by no means bigger than us, but they buy world class players cause they are prepared to pay for them. If VDV were keen to come here and wanted 100 k a week, would we pay. No... Would tottenham? Of course. Can't compete if we buy relegated cut price players because other teams are investing in quality...

Excellent article on Villatalk http://www.villatalk.com/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=4067 Curtis Davies' shoulder injury was well documented last season, and heralded a sharp downturn in form (although some fans were apparently too stupid to understand that such an injury will seriously compromise a player's performances). If it is true that Davies is still carrying this injury, then O'Neill should be relieved of his duties and sectioned under the mental health act. Of course, what should happen and what will happen are two very different things. As the Villatalk article says, O'Neill isn't going anywhere. We're stuck with him for better or for worse. And it certainly isn't for better.

I was looking forward to this coming season as I had been fed up this summer with the disappointment of watching my American National team struggle as much as they did. The worst part of it is that now Aston Villa are failing for the same reasons that the USA is failing. A lack of quality (minus 2-3 star players) and an absolutely horrid strategy. Our back four look horrible when on the ball and then try to skip the central midfield in favor of long balls to the wing. Guess what MON, everyone knows that we try to get the ball to Young and Milner so that they can run up the wing and put a ball into Heskey (Why the ***** is Heskey on our team?) which in turn goes into the net. The problem seems to be that everyone knows this and puts three defenders on Milner and Ash at a time. The bigger problem is that Ash tries and fails to take on the three defenders and gives away a counter attack leading to A) A Shorey ***** up. B) A pile up of our defenders on one guy leaving 3 men exposed for an open run up to the goal. C) Running right past the flat footed no talent Davies and Cuellar. Milner on the other hand looks to pass the ball to a central midfielder, but since they don't seem to exist, the three defenders on him take the ball away and then go to our end and score for the previous reasons. Now if we instead of skipping the central midfield, passed it to the central midfielders for some possession and build up, that might just open up the wings for Milner and Ash. I felt the exact same way watching Villa vs Wigan as I did watching Mexico vs USA. All the possession belonged to the opponent and they were content holding the ball in the center until something opened up. We on the other hand forcefed the ball to the wings, causing a turnover and counterattack. This is where we needed the likes of a Barry or other talented central holding midfielder. Someone who is comfortable holding the ball until something opens up. While I love Stan, he just runs up the middle until he gets fouled or dispossessed. He never is content to move up the ball and wait for something to open. I really believe that with the likes of a central holding midfielder that draws the defence to him, we could open up the wings and then play our game. We are just way to predictable. Now arguably the most frustrating thing for me to watch was our back four's attempt to hold possession/dribble/pass. I mean this is ***** that people learn when they are 10 years old, yet our overpayed underqualified defense can't seem to get it right. So many times yesterday Beye *****ed up a pass to Milner, Cueller just *****ed up at all times, Curtis didn't know what to do with the ball and Shorey (who I am convinced was playing for Wigan) put a Wigan player through on our net. Oh I know this has had nothing to do with transfers, I am just venting right now. But for transfers. We really need two quality centerbacks. My question is why not throw Lerner's money around? Why not try to throw money at an Upson or Hangeland. If you argue that Villa can't offer champions league, ask yourself this... Can City? No but they throw around money and got some great quality. I don't want to see anymore money thrown at unproven Championship side players. If i hear one more link to a player from Newcastle or Borough or Leeds I might just lose it. This is not what we need. WE NEED PROVEN QUALITY. So Lerner, open up your pockets, MON sack up and throw the money at people.
