'If It's Football, It's Vital'

We Didn't Do Enough

Stiliyan Petrov, new club captain, has admitted we didn't do enough in our match against Wigan today. Fans however disagree, they are saying we didn't do anything.

Speaking on the official site in his new role of attempting to placate those of us who are less than happy, Stan admitted Wigan deserved all 3 points today.

'It's very disappointing. I don't think we had enough to take something from the game. We just weren't good enough.'

Confidence can hardly be high after that and many fans have already indicated their worry for the forthcoming campaign, what will we take seriously, will anything change and more importantly it's going to be a hell of a long season.

On that point Petrov agrees, but probably for different reasons.

'It's going to be a long season and we hope we won't have a repeat of games like that.

'We made it bad for ourselves. We had a few chances but after the first 15 minutes they woke up.

'They passed the ball better and they scored a good first goal. We had a few chances but we just couldn't take them.

'Overall I think they deserved to win today and we will see tomorrow what mistakes we made.'

They woke up, and like normal we fell to sleep. I got used to these sorts of quotes in the second half of last season unfortunately it appears we'll have to get used to them in this one aswell.

IMO NRC should of been in midfield and he should of been captain. Well, we did beat Juventus with him in the team.....

Even if we sign proper players, we need tactics and ideas! Do we have them? I can see MON panicing now and bringing in an handful of salifou, harewood, routledge type players, and next summer we will be selling them!

Bring in some players now, this was the wake up call MON needed, we have not replaced the players lost or added to build a squad. Act now MON or we will follow Newcastle!!

We had out there four at the back, not one of who is comfortable when in possession of the ball. Our central defenders on that showing are simply not up to the task, while at full back we were woefully inadequate. Our impotent strike force will not score us goals. Take John Carew out of the mix and we are screwed, and how O'Neill cannot see fit to bring in another striker, someone to give us options and alternatives, is beyond me. It was a mess, pure and simple, nowhere near good enough, but sadly a result/performance that will be all too common if O'Neill doesn't stop refusing to pay the cash (if indeed the cash is there!!) to bring in the quality players that are so desperately needed in key areas. Our competitors are not going to sell their better players to us at knock-down give away prices. Totally outplayed by a Wigan side, that man for man were head and shoulders performance wise above our lot. Very worrying.

glensider...we have a decent striker in Gabby. Even my nan can see that you have to play the ball on the floor to a little man. Villa get the ball into the box though crosses and the long ball.

Couldn't agree more Glensider. To start the season with 2 centre halves, not replacing Barry, and in no way improving the squad is just bad management. Don't get me wrong, I love MON, what he's done for us is amazing, but it counts for nothing if we're going backwards rather than forward. Hopefully this will be the kick up the @r$e he needs to spend some money. I'm gutted!

if the cash is indeed there, MON is making randy look bad by not spending it! sign some chuffing players martin. 4 or 5 minimum to have a big enough squad. and not crap like harewood or downing.

So many failings yesterday it's hard to know where to begin. 1) We cannot continue to play with just two central midfielders. They will constantly be crowded out by teams that play three, four or sometimes five players in that role. 2) Tactically we were naive. At the back none of our players was happy on the ball (as said by glensider). Their first instinct is always to kick the ball as far away as possible. There is no point in playing the ball to Gabby's feet with his back to goal. The ball has to be played into space for him to run onto. Flicked headers of the kind Heskey produced are very hit and miss. We need someone to hold the ball while our midfielders get forward in support. 3) After the first fifteen minutes the team started playing as if they had only just met as they walked down the tunnel. No cohesion. 4) Apart from Sidwell, when he came on, no-one took responsibility for imposing himself on the game. It was always someone else's job. Unfortunately, I do not see an immediate solution. Buying three or four quality players will help on items three and four but not on one and two. I am in the slough of despond.

Gabby a decent striker - never. He is not a six yard box man and never will be. Nor is he a leader of the line. His performances for the whole of 2009 have shown that. The start of the season was his purple period, but he is best out wide, or on the break running into space. If he has a strikers instinct I have never seen it.
