'If It's Football, It's Vital'

The John Carew Situation And 'Injury'?

Ok, the John Carew situation.

He was on the team sheet before the game today to be a sub.

That is a sub behind Emile 'I don't shoot let alone score' Heskey and the newly chunky (looked so unfit) Gabby Agbonlahor who also if memory serves me right, didn't shoot... if he did, I must have blinked.

Now when JC - the only player for the last part of last season who looked likely to shoot and who went on a run of goals, the same player that MON keeps talking about in glowing terms - came out to warm up, he didn't look a happy man, in fact, he looked quite the opposite.

When he went off, he didn't hobble, there was no sign of pain or injury. THAT IS NOT TO SAY that he wasn't injured but.....?

OK, so he was injured in warm up? He didn't look like he had a care in the world for Norway v Scotland the other day. If he picked up an injury there... then he wouldn't have been on the team sheet today would he?

An injury for a player who was going to be on the bench, picked up in the warm up? Or an 'injury'.

Conspiracy theories are all well and good and although the rumour very quickly did the rounds that he had in fact got ... how can I put this without the threat of legal action!? Ok, he can't have been happy being on the bench behind two strikers who don't actually score. He can't have been carrying an injury before the game or if he was what the hell was he even put on the bench for? He must have been wondering what the heck was going on and he has been .... no, can't say that either.

The rumour is he was upset not injured, certainly seemed to be what callers to the phone ins on the way home were also saying. If I was him, I'd have been upset as well. Rumours are all well and good, but if he had picked up an injury, why did it take so long for us to be told, why was the change on the team sheet made so late and why wasn't the change announced.

No doubt he was injured, no doubt at all? I tell you one thing though, it wasn't just me sitting around by the bench who read the body language of those there and the glum faces, not that of a happy bench and staff all up for the first game of the season.

The performance was reminiscent of the David O'Dearme days when he had lost the dressing room.... Makes you wonder.

Oh dear, there must be something in it. Gabby has had 60mins of pre-season and should never have been starting this game! Heskey and Milner at least got mins for England. John Carew, as far as I am concerned should be our first choice striker if we play 4-4-2 or 4-5-1. He should play week in week out. If he goes watch us keep Harewood!! Unbelievable!! O'Neill needs to speak up and honestly with the fans and now. It isnt too early for a post-mortem - just ask Bryan Gunn!!

I'd have been furious too. He's our only goal threat. Lets face it, we're toothless when he doesn't play. I just don't see the appeal in Heskey. I don't know what MON is thinking. And if this rumour is true I can't see Carew having much of a future. So our season rests on the scoreless pair of Gabby and Emule with an 18 year old (Fonz) as back up. Oh dear. This is going to be a long season...

Harewood and Heskey - 50 goals between them and Englands strikeforce that brings home the World Cup........OR we go and we get that guy at Real Madrid, who is being forced out and doesnt even have a squad number Ruud Van Nistelrooy!! I cant see Carew getting another chance, and although I support him in this, if it is remotely true, he will unfortunatley be sold!!

What is going on? We need telling the truth by either party MON or Carew. Big John is the oinly 1 likely to score for us and MON knows that. Very Dissappointed with todays showing, more like this and championship here we come.

I know he didn't score in the Norway game but JC was excellent, at the centre of every Norwegian attacking move. He puts in a fabulous performance like that, against a similar opposition to what we see in the PL, and then gets benched for the no score boys. Very odd!

How MON can put Heskey above Carew I just dont know. No offence to Heskey, he's a nice guy, but he is a pants striker....well, no, let me rephrase...he's just PANTS...because he obviously isnt a striker as he never strikes ! Agbonlahor doesnt score enough either. Last season I really felt we could take on anyone...we looked that good in the first half of the season. We should have built on that, but instead we've crumbled...selling good players and replacing with either dross (Beye) or untried youngsters. It has to be down to bad management. I know its only one game but today we were were absolute crap. Compare our squad to the big guns....we've got no chance.

At last the blind faithful are seeing the light that MON is *****e. I have been knocked on this site for saying in the past that he is not the great manager you all think he is. I hope the Ulster man's days are numbered. TTFN Mr tacticaly inept O'Neill. We could have lost by 5 or 6 today. I hope JC is not a fall guy for speaking out. I assume NRC is also not too happy tonight.

Why the hell did O`Neill give Carew the big build up on friday only to leave him on the bench?

I am effing sick off oneill this summer, and I am effing sick of the administration to be honest, Lerner never talks to us, the General is merely a pr puppet who flirts around difficult questions, and oneill needs a foot up his arse over this transfer window. lets start with Bouma; injured 12 months ago/may have to retire - oneill has known this for 12 months and yet we are left with nicky shorey who isnt good enough, and we have no natural like for like options past shorey, or back up in this position - why hasnt this been addressed this summer or in january????????? oneill has known for 12 months Barry was off this summer, like we all have, and yet we have no obvious, like for like replacement (no offence to delph, or downing, i like you both but only time will tell if you can fill his size 10's) - again oneill has failed in replacing Barry as far as i am concerned. Again oneill must have known King Laursen had to retire in February/March after his last knee injury - I was told on good authority from a source this was the case nearly two months before Laursen actually made his retirement announcement. Oneill has failed again in finding a man big enough and brave enough to wear the famous number 5 shirt for us - not only that why the f@@k sell Knight and have no replacement???????? Also, Distin is a steal at 4.5m, why penny pinch? Hangerland has his price, pay the 15m for god sake. All of this is totally criminal as far as I am concerned, and I am still seriously vexed over his decision in the UEFA Cup last season. We have spent only circa 3m net this summer, and appear to be in a position of 'selling to buy' as far as I am concerned. I have shelled out another 1k on two season tickets this year, followed the peace cup in spain and I demand answers, not to satisfy my vanity, but to restore some order and belief for us all. The Fear, I want to post this in the Generals forum, and diplomatically, and elloquently direct my opinion to the administration. I understand the reason for censorship in there and why you have to limit the stupid questions and idiotic enept ramblings, but I dont think I am unjust. I want to know what is going on, and demand it from the manager, owner, and administration. enough is enough, I will no longer defend oneill, he isnt infallable, he is only human, and as such has made alot of mistakes over the past 12 months as far as I am concerned - but that said unless he looses the dressing room, he should be backed. Fans alike; am I wrong?

some are saying he had an infected toe. Fine, do you do the fitness test after announcing the team? When a team change is made is it not then announced? If he picked up a toe infection since his international duty, would he not have been listed as a potential injury like the others mentioned in the week? Would they really have even considered a player with an infection? Toes are pretty important parts of the feet and feet are fairly important so I believe for the ability of a player to be able to run and kick a ball. I seriously hope we don't get any bull over this, would rather no comment at all. Strange with this 'infection' there was no limping...

he hasn't lost the dressing room ffs. he commands respect amongst the players, even if he doesn't amongst the fans. it was only a few days ago that friedel was saying how MON is our very own fergie. in my humble opinion, MON is a great man manager and not as tactically inept as some think - however he doesn't have a clue in the transfer market.

Fergie has won the league nearly a dozen times, two European Cups and many other honours. Under his stewardship Man Utd have enjoyed the probably the longest period of sustained success in English football history. MON is not Fergie.

IMO some of the players are obviously still with the manager, like Friedel, Petrov, Heskey and others are not like Carew, NRC, which is why no one looked comfortable yesterday and up and ready for the new season, again just my opinion but blazing rows before kick off will reflect in the togetherness and performance of the team, I could be wrong, the whole cold atmosphere could be a new pychological tactic, not sure which scenario is worse

ric112 can you explain why Milner was move to play at the back? I doubt it, not the first time he's played talented midfield players out of position. Surely most people are scratching their heads at atleast 2 or 3 of his matchday decisions? I fear MON has a... My Way or No Way... approach and I therefore doubt he will change. That was total tosh yesterday from the management down.
