I'm not convinced by this, according to The Mirror and also reported on Vital Blackburn that Villa have had a £4million bid for Blackburn's versatile left-back and sometimes midfielder Stephen Warnock turned down. I was told by a press man a few weeks ago that these links were being rubbished by the club and press had been steered away from it, however things do change in football fairly quickly when other targets become unavailable.
Nice one this is! The Daily Mail say that our hopes of signing Real Madrid midfielder and Holland international Wesley Sneijder have taken a step for the good as Inter Milan have admitted they can't afford Real's asking price of £20million. The report says whilst Villa would want to pay around £5million less Inter will abandon any move and go for another midfielder altogether.
Sneijder's agent Soren Lerby said: 'For some time there has been talk of a move to Inter for Sneijder, but the reality is that there is nothing happening.' Adding about the player ''Wesley is an attacking midfielder, very technical, with good vision for the game. Sneijder would definitely go to a club that can guarantee an almost constant use. A few days ago I heard from someone of Inter, but the problem is the money required by Real. The possibility that he remains in Madrid is still quite high.' Ah right, so not quite so much of a boost as first expected, but then, maybe we can convince him that sunny Aston is the place to be?! Chelsea have also apparently been watching the 25-year-old.
The Mirror says Sam Allardyce has laughed the bid out of Blackburn... well, not exactly those words, but you get the drift. It is claimed that Rovers would only consider a deal if the money was considerably more for the player who was Blackburn's Player of the Year last season.
The Guardian meanwhile have Villa down for a double swoop on Spurs for David Bentley and Jermaine Jenas. I know the Jenas link has been 'dismissed' by Appy Arry and the player himself said he was happy at Spurs but, well... whispers do suggest otherwise. Now I don't go much for this ITK stuff and whispers and gossip within the game are often as wide of the mark as the gossip from press and outsiders... however .... ?
Time will tell on that one. I'd think the delay in the Spurs links would be more down to the fact Appy Arry wanted Ashley Young as part of the deal, something Villa won't consider and also IF Spurs were to sell Jenas, they'd want a replacement in first, they are being linked with Wigan's Lee Cattermole (also being chased by former Manager and now Sunderland boss Steve Bruce) so maybe that is the key!? I was told the other day for a friendly, out of a squad of 22, JJ wasn't there and has no injury issues at the moment.
Anyway... The Guardian say the interest in Bentley is back on and is exploring the chances of grabbing him and Jenas. They say that no official offer has been made yet but they are trying to find out what sort of price Spurs expect for the duo.
The indications are that Tottenham could be willing to do business for the pair, although, as yet, not at a price that Villa would be prepared to pay. says the reporter Stuart James.
The Daily Star say that Fulham are after Villa midfielder (and captain for a game or two in the Peace Cup) Nigel Hokey-Cokey. The paper claims 25-year-old NRC wants a move back to London. Nah, can't see that myself, well... hmmm... ok, maybe if we got Jenas?!
Oh and just a quick one, well done to Everton for turning down Joleon Lescott's transfer request. Good to see another club willing to stand by their principles and not allowing the players to show absolutely no loyalty at all when the big promise of ££££ wages from Manchester City or anywhere else is waved in front of their faces.
Nothing to do with Villa but everything to do with football, our thoughts I'm sure are with John Hartson who told The Sun 'I have so much to live for' after 'winning the first stage of his fight against cancer'.
