Brad Friedel says Villa can match anyone in the Premiership adding, 'We are very excited about the challenge. Manchester City are spending a lot of money, but that doesn’t always mean they will gel as quickly as they would want to. That is an unknown at this moment. Only time will tell how they will get on together.' He says the ones to beat are still Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United and says the challenge is one Villa can 'cope with'.

TOTAL PANTS - Ashley Young Is Going Nowhere!! Aidan Magee of the News of the World , I'm sorry kind sir, but you are talking total pants! His report today says Spurs are ready to make a 'new' bid for England and Villa winger Ashley Young. A new bid? There hasn't been a bid as far as I can make out and if there was, you would certainly expect them not to make a joke of themselves by bidding just £21million for the 24-year-old former Watford man. Thought for the day: I fancied a game of darts with my mate. He said, 'Nearest the bull goes first' He went 'Baah' and I went 'Moo' He said 'You're closest'

Good as always to see three Villans in Fabio Capello's England squad for the friendly international against The Netherlands, but you have to agree with Martin O'Neill, and no doubt countless other premiership managers, who question the sense and the need to be playing a friendly international, a mere three days before the new campaign gets underway. Shouldn't these players really be back at their respective clubs training ground, working on the serious business of preparing for the big premiership kick off?
