WOW Player Incoming? Villa Transfer Talk

A few links that can now be dismissed it seems!

Spurs have completed the signing of Newcastle defender Sebastien Bassong for around 8million. We were linked earlier in the week.

Darren Bent has completed his move to Sunderland, must admit I'm really surprised Martin O'Neill didn't fancy Bent, I thought he'd be perfect as he is on the fringes of the England set up, is young (25) and has the handy knack that people seem to like in strikers, he shoots and scores!

Looks like Newcastle have agreed a fee as reported on Vital Newcastle for Habib Beye who we are buying aren't we? Well, maybe not, the fee has been agreed with Hull City. Will Villa nip in? Well the press linked us several times this week

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has expressed an interest in Fulham defender, strongly linked with Villa a month back, Brede Hangeland according to the Independent.

Ok, those are the boring bits of possible links 'missed'. I say 'missed' because it is only the press telling us we were after them, not the club so half or more we've probably never even talked about buying!

Now for the interesting one and the one that won't go away.

According to The Guardian MON has expressed interest in Real Madrid midfielder Wesley Sneijder.

Now many have been waiting for a WOW player since the arrival of the new regime and manager, this 25-year Dutch playmaker / midfielder could well be that man!

The report, as well as ones that have gone before it, say that Real Madrid need to sell a few players to help fund the massive transfer's they have made this summer and Sneijder could be on the list of potential exits.

As we quoted earlier in the week, his agent has said the Spanish giants want to keep him but that is an agent talking!

Other reports had claimed Internazionale (Inter Milan to me and you mush!) wanted him on loan with a view to a permanent move.

Nice thing about this report is there is at least a quote from the Villa boss!

'I think that the more creativity you have in your side the better chance you will have. These are particularly special players who are not (usually) available. If there were players like Sneijder, who have great talent and might be surplus to requirements at a club that is buying, then I think you should be interested, even if that interest is not reciprocated. Because how else are you going to try and improve your team?'

COME ON!

The same report also link us again to Newcastle United full-back Habib Beye as mentioned above and still say we might come to an agreement with Portsmouth for Sylvain Distin.

The Daily Star quotes Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate as being 'amazed' that no one has bought striker Tuncay yet but still says the 27-year-old will no doubt be gone by the end of the transfer window.

Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate admits that he is 'amazed' that Tuncay is still with the club but expects the 27-year-old to leave by September. Villa were strongly linked at the time we bought Stewart Downing but it doesn't look like we've followed up on the interest, if indeed there ever was interest!

The report says that the player is now looking at options abroad despite reported interest from Liverpool, Chelsea and Aston Villa. Hey, might as well throw in Spurs and Everton as well, they are usually mentioned along with us for players!

Southgate said: 'We have had several calls but no written offers, though things are heating up. He would like to stay over here but is now thinking he may have to play in Europe.'

It does a bit don't it. Would LOVE him at the Villa, but just can't see it happening. I'm officially being negative about this, and would love to be proven wrong! Would really like Tuncay as well, I don't see the problem to be honest, just sign him! Hmmm, I'm being a bit grumpy for a Friday. Not like me at all!

sneijder would be the signing of the season but as MON has spoke about him being a target i doubt that he actually is one now or he would have kept it to himself unless a deal was nearly done but in that case surely he would just say a deal is nearly done great to see were aiming high but i still think defour will be our man

There was also a quote from a Madrid bigwig (Valdano) saying that Alonso was the last signing and now they are looking at a few exits. Can't see him coming to us if I am being realistic but would love to see him put on that number 23 shirt in the colours of Claret and Blue.

I think he's just taking the pressure off a bit by saying we may not have a chance with him but we'll give it a go. Quite refreshing to hear it from MON who is usually pretty guarded, at least its a step in the right direction. I'm dreaming of us signing Sneijder, Tuncay and Hangelaand, then we really would have a team that could have a go at the top 4!! Guess its just a dream!

After all he may suprise us all and think, yea time for me to be worshipped at a club that will love me. Could you imagine the skill that man posesses and still relatively young too. He would become a Legend Here. am praying we can get him.

Arsene Wenger is also saying in todays Daily Mirror that he views the Villa and (possibly) a "surprise" team as Arsenal's biggest threats next season. He seems to imply that he regarded Villa as title challengers for a part of last season. Wenger also says that he doesn't regard Manchester Citeh as top four contenders in 2009/10. If A. Wenger is to be proved correct (hopefully!), then The Villa need (at the very least) two quality center backs. MON also has to hope Citeh don't sign any quality defenders, and Everton's team spirit is disrupted by the JL to Citeh transfer saga.

I remember Ron Saunders saying about signing new players that if you read in the paper that Villa were about to sign someone at an astronomical price that was just the press talking; if you read that we were about to sign someone no-one had heard of at a low fee that was the Chairman [Deadly] talking and if you read that we had signed a quality player for a sensible fee AND there was a picture of the player with a Villa shirt on, that was the manager talking. MON seems to operate a similar policy. It worked for Ron!!

not bothered in the slightest about sneijder. Without at least two defenders we face a long hard and depressing season. I love the two signings made so far but selling Knight before signing a replacement is gross negligence. We now have a defence of shorey, davies, cuellar and young and - oh no that's it. Hardley the most inspiring based on form since xmas and if we gat an injury anywhere along the back line we'll be playing centre mid players back there again.

No natural leader among the defenders either. CD is potentially a captain, however often talks in footballer cliches. His "ten cup finals, till the end of the season" (or something like that) after the CSKA Moscow fiasco felt like the kiss of death. Every competetive game a multi-millionaire footballer plays in should be a "cup final". The Villa defense is currently the weakest link. I'm not confident about how the current choices would fare in a freezing Europa Cup tie in eastern Europe, let alone the long season ahead.

I think it sounds more like we were interested, but he isn't. And then excusing the fact that he doesn't want to come by saying: "if you don't try and get these players, you never will get one" which is fair enough. I can't imagine us getting him, but I can imagine us getting Tuncay. I would LOVE Sneijder, but I would be happy enough with a Tuncay! Seems to have put an end to the stupid rumour we would land all three dutch players at Real. Hunterlaar is already on his way out! I guess our only chance with Sneijder would be at the eleventh hour, if Sneijder would be told its Villa or sitting on the bench, or not even making the bench. And him coming because afterall, we have Europa League.

I think MON usually keeps his cards close to his chest because of the finance aspect. You keep it quiet, then you keep other people from sniffing, keep people from sniffing, then you keep out of a price war. Good sense to me. But the thing with REAL is, any one wanting their players KNOW they have to sell. Real really don't want to be stuck with a load of the players they have come end of august, so MON has nothing to lose by talking about a player like sneijder. Everyone knows he's a possibility, so he's just given us a sniff :)
