'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Do Aston Villa Need A New Anthem?

WHAT'S THAT SONG THE VILLA SING? YOU KNOW THE ONE?!

The matchday atmosphere at Villa park is like most football grounds in the premier league excluding a few, if not a little better. There's generally a good atmosphere, and when its rocking, its really is rocking (and that's just with two sides of the ground singing).

The new Villa era has arrived and its time to come up with an anthem to be sung by everybody as the players come out, until kickoff.

I mean when Liverpool come singing 'you'll never walk alone' or the them lot down the road crying ' keep right on ' wouldn't it be very nice to have something else to shout back at them and really drown them out for a good few minutes.

I'd sing along, would you?

The General has suggested that maybe this is an avenue that can be worked on via the Supporters Consultation Group. Trouble is, is this something that can be publicised and started or just something that starts naturally and catches on? Personally I think the latter and think the Paul McGrath song has sort of become the anthem? We do have the bells are ringing, or Holteenders in the Sky, maybe they need to be pushed more?

I did ask the board at some stage to get in touch with Black Sabbath (some of them are Villa boys) and see if they'd record a version of Holteenders in the Sky, now that would be epic!

doctor who also suggested a poll, I'll not use it as I have a few other questions to push through but thought it could be answered in the forum thread and article comments...

Do Villa need a new anthem?

Yes or no the songs we use are enough already.

Anyone remember (back in the day) when the Come on you lions song (not many lyrics obviously) used to get everyone stomping even in the trinity rd stand (suppose the wooden floors helped) - but great atmos back then. Dont most anthems get started in the pub before the game and if theyre any good they get transported into the stands ?

yup, remember come on you lions. If any anthem, I'd love the bells are ringing to make a comeback, buggered if I can remember the words though, been so long and I'm so very thick!

I think Holte Enders in the Sky is the anthem that we should concentrate on. It comes from 'Ghost Riders in the Sky' by Johnny Cash. I think that Villa should walk out to that one to get the fans going instead of that stupid grand stand that they come out to at the moment.

Hi Fear The words to 'the bells are ringing', as I rememebr. It was a long time ago. The bells are ringing for the claret and blue (clarrie blue, clarrie blue) The heavens are singing for the claret and blue Everbody is going To the Villa they're going And the villa are showing They're the best in the land Best in the Land Repeat Those were the days. Happy days. I was young, I had hair...

sound about right chico, I do remember the night of the last AV Shareholders Association meeting where we voted to accept the Randy share offer (formality obviously but things had to be done right via assiation rules) Dennis Mortimer was speaking and I 'dared' to interupt, about the only thing I'd ever do that for with a text 'deal done announcement due, Ellis era over'... Well, we finished the meeting and then a few of us including Carl and Buck Chinn went outside the Holte End with a bottle or two of champagne and sang the bells are ringing (as well as the wicked witch is dead!!!!!) Happy days!.... and yes, I know what you mean about hair! :o(

I don't understand the reference to 'them other lot" singing 'keep right on'. Surely their song is 'Wipe that snot off the end of your nose'? Or am I missing something?

we need to learn the delphy song to the tune of addams family he passes like juninho he shoots jus like rivaldo hes better than robhino the fabulous fabian delph fabian delph *click click* fabian deplh etc you all know how it goes . I think an anthem is much needed and holtenders in the sky has the potential as it rouses everyone up as we only get louder and louder.

I love HITS but it's a bit short. I even got my Polish girlfriends Uncle (Who speaks v little English) singing "Yipee Ay Aye Yipee Ay Oh!" when I watched us beat Chelsea 2-0 at his house in Poland. The Paul McGrath My Lord song has become a bit of an anthem and it is nice and long. It always annoys me that the first verse (the one with the McGrath reference) is usually really quiet and by the time enough people join in for it to be heard we're on to verse 2. Maybe we should sing the first verse twice?!? I will always sing whatever is being sung as long as I know the words. Loving that Fabian Delph song. :)

A couple of points about songs above. The full version of HITS is; As I walked up the Holte End one bright and sunny day, away away away. I spied a poor B-lose fan running far away away away away. I said to the B-lose fan its time for you to die to die to die. He said 'yes I know sir, Holte Enders in the sky. Yipppee aye aa yippee aye oohh, Holte Enders In the sky. And as for the start of the Paul Mcgrath song the official pub version starts with; Yes we have a friend in Jesus. Yes we have a friend in God. Yes we have a friend in Jesus. And his name is Paul McGrath. Paul McGrath my lord Paul McGrath etc. As for an official anthem there are some things that make good anthem stand out from the rest. Ideally it is a tune most people know. It is timeless and will be as good in 20 years as it is now. That usually means it has no reference to players/managers, it is about the club, not people who come and go. It has no swear words. It has to be easy enough for people to sing. Unfortunately Murderpool claimed the rights to YNWA, which until 20 years ago used to be sung by every club across the country, but somewhere it morphed into just a Murderpool song (I think Hillsborough was the actual turning point). Citeh have Blue Moon but Eastlands doesn't really have a singing area of the ground and it doesn't really work. Small Heaths Keep Right On, unfortunately is a reasonable club anthem. Stoke do Delilah well. And it has taken years, but Country Roads is becoming the anthem for Manure, who for years have traditionally been the quitest home support in the land (other than Maybe Spuds, Aresnal and Everton, who are all equally quiet). Apart from that I can not really name any other supposed club anthems.
