Martin O'Neill Hints At Defender Arrivals

Martin O'Neill Hints At Defender Arrivals

Martin O'Neill has admitted that his priority is the defence having lost retired Martin Laursen and sold Zat Knight to Bolton.

'Defence is a priority. We have Carlos and Curtis but I think, on the whole, we are a bit light defensively. That is something we are looking at. We definitely want to improve ourselves at the back. It is evident we need to do that. We are actively looking at recruits across the back four. We have made enquiries - in fact we have done more than make enquiries - and we will see how the land lies in the foreseeable future.'

He hints here that a move (or two... we can but hope?!) are imminent:

'I wouldn't mention individual names but we are in the throes of trying to improve the team. Like everything else, it takes a bit of time but we do have a couple of weeks before the deadline finishes.'

And his last bit is he wants to bring in more players to supplement the squad admitting that he has said that for some adding, 'and we are obviously looking round for as good value as we can get.'

Good value in football? Not sure it exists and with Real Madrid and Manchester City's massive spending this summer, it is obvious that the market has become inflated, I guess you either pay the money or you simply don't get the players?

We asked on the 9th July: Where do Villa most need to strengthen?

Seems the majority agree with MON as 72% voted central defence.

Central midfield 15%
Up front 6%
Goalkeeper 4%
Right-back 1%
Left-back 1%
Wing 1%

Must admit, I was surprised then and remain surprised that we aren't also frantically looking for a natural goalscorer... hey, maybe we are... just don't think there are enough goals in the players we have... now come on chaps, score 20 goals each this season and make that last sentence look totally out of place!

i suspect MON sees this year as a big one for delfonueso. i can see him getting much more game time and i am sure he will contrive to make some great plays this ball season.

it will be interesting to see who MON brings in now i would expect at least 4 more signings before the window closes and if the additions we have already made are anything to go by there will be some real quality gracing our pitch next year and with the net spend at pritty much zero at the moment i would imagine we would have 40m or there about to spend so looking forward to see what develops utv

Can someone tell me why the hell we had to sell before we buy ?? is it just me that thinks this happens every season ?? The papers go on about how we have spent like 18m, but they don't mention we have sold Barry for 12m and Knight for 4m.. 18M brought sold 16m.. We have spent 2million out of what ever war chest we are carrying. It seems crazy to think of how much profit Lerner has made this season and we aren't going after major players, Why aren't we seeing the likes of Upson and Hangeland, Richards to Villa, instead of having Distin, Campbell, Beye etc etc.

I think after the Peace Cup - MON is going to use his 'fallback' plan of playing the kids if things become desperate and he doesn't get the players he wants. Anyone know what's happening with the Distin deal? It's all gone a bit David Bentley! All talk and no action!

I agree, I can't believe David even said he was talking to us !! and nothing as happened, So far we have a really bare thin squad, and i do think he will use the Youth kids as an excuse.
