Europa Opponents To Be Unveiled

Europa Opponents To Be Unveiled

Tomorrow Villa will find out who we face in the Europa League Play Off.

We are seeded for the event, and the draw will take place at 12.30pm in Nyon, Switzerland.

The third qualifying round, second leg ties take place this evening but so far our qualifying opponents could be anyone from Genoa, Hearts, Trabzonspor (a personal favourite of mine), or Dynamo Moscow.

The announcement will be made as soon as is possible tomorrow.

While I dont expect to go out, sweep aside all before us, and win this competition, I do hope that from day one we take the tournament a damn sight more seriously that we ever did last season. I know that its all water under the bridge now, but why the hell we ever entered the Inter-Toto Cup in the first place, I will never understand. It was quite obvious to all that it was down the list of Martin O'Neill's priorities, which is a complete and utter shame. After all, a prestigious trophy was at stake, and we had more chance of lifting the UEFA Cup, than we ever did of finishing top four in the premiership. Oh well, this season is a new dawn, and when you recall the glorious nights of competitive european club football back in the late seventies and early eighties particularly, you realise that a good run in new Europa Cup will give the whole club a huge lift.

So, its the Austrian outfit Rapid Vienna then, with the first leg over in Austria. Experienced european campaigners, and why we could have faced a more tougher opponent, this lot certainly wont be a pushover. I believe I'm right in saying that they beat Tottenham Hotspur in a pre-season warm up game, so clearly they do have something about them, and they are more than capable of making life difficult for us, particularly on their home patch.
