'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Wednesday's Aston Villa Transfer Talk!

The Daily Mail have an article on Tottenham and former Blackburn Rovers winger David Bentley who at the start of the summer transfer window was strongly linked to Villa. So strongly in fact the player said he was joining us!

The article suggests that Villa do want him but not at the price Spurs are holding out for, which they claim is £15million.

It does appear that Bentley will only be a bit part player and isn't really in Appy Arry's plans.

Redknapp said: 'He's a good lad and a good player but I've changed how we play and I've had results so nobody can complain. David is going to look and think, 'I'm not in the team, even when Aaron Lennon's not fit, and maybe it's time I moved on'.'

Interesting to see if the 24-year-old does end up at Villa, as the article says he needs to move to get his career back on track but to do that he'll need help from Spurs who have no chance of getting back what they paid Blackburn last summer!

A report in La Gazzetta, the first thing read in the Fear household each morning, suggests that the Villa links to Wesley Sneijder won't come to fruition as his agent says the player isn't for sale.

His agent Soren Lerby said: 'We have an understanding with Real Madrid that Wesley can't leave the club and nothing has changed there.'

The Journal claim Villa will sign Newcastle defender Habib Beye by the end of the week and are also interested in his team mate, right-back Sebastién Bassong who we have been linked with before.

And that appears to be all the press talk about today!

Arry would be stupid to sell Bentley to one of his biggest rivals. I think he would have done some sort of exchange deal involving Ash or Carew, otherwise no.

Redknob is stupid, Levy's transfer policy is scattergun at best. They have to sell Bentley, they can't afford to keep the bloke in the reserves. I agree Saurat, Real will sell if they have to, and it looks like they will have to. It's amazing they have gone down the Galacticos route again, it failed first time round.

If Bentley really isn't in Arry's plans, and that seems to be the case, then he would be best advised to sell, or does he want to carry on paying his wages as he warms the bench, his value goes down, and his ability and reputation. Eventually he will go on a free and has cost a small fortune as a bench warmer! Just like with Bent, in the end they will have to cut their losses and "bite in the sour apple" as we say in German. I still expect him to come to us, or maybe he can persuade Mark Hughes to cough up more than he is worth! Otherwise we will sign him on August 31 for 10 M!

Can't imagine us signing players like Wesley Sneijder unless we have: 1) CL footy to offer or, 2) Man City type wages to offer, IF he is a mersonary type! Stupid link, just there to take up space on the newspapers.

The Redknapp quote was from last season. With Young, Downing and Milner he'd get no more first team opportunities at Villa and with Peter Crouch finally has someone to aim at. At the price Villa are offering it doesn't make business sense for Spurs to sell...

Can't see anyone paying 15mil for Bentley... not when harry's as good as said he wont be using him much. No "unwanted" player would go for that much, ridiculous price... I think once the Alonso signing is confirmed the Sneijder rumours will gather pace.

Actually, just to pick you up on something above, Beye is a right back, isnt Bassong a Centre back?

Got to agree, Bentley is pointless now we have Downing, Delph and Albrighton. Prefer to look at CBx2, RB and a forward to be honest

Shame Bent went so sunderland.... really think he would have added something up front!
Ericols_Son
I agree with you_jonah. We really need to start looking at some defensive options as well as proven goal scorer. Bent would have been nice, but that seems like a dead duck now he's passed his medical at Sunderland.

Milner might be the better allrounder, especially with his workrate but Bentley is by far the better, more natural right winger. Whether we need/want him or not is another matter but don't be fooled by one bad seaon at a club that didn't use him to his strengths and are known as a graveyard for talent.

As VOTN says, Bent has not joined Sunderland, they seem to be stalling over something, maybe Spurs have had an interesting offer from someone else?

ERM... Newcastle were absolutely awful at the back last season. Why do we (allegedly) want two of the culprits? I can't say I've seen enough of either to judge properly (I can't stand the Barcodes so rarely watch them) but I must say that the idea of signing half of a woeful back four doesn't inspire me.

i think albrighton has forced MON to change his plans of buying bent with his superb perfomaces ...so all we really need now is a top finisher two centrebacks and snieder if we can get him....the future is bright

..gp:friedal,guzan,parish. ..Lb:bouma,shorey,..cb:distin,,davies,cuellar,and a youthplayer. rb: young, lichaj, cm: coker, petrov, sidwell, delph, and a youthplayer, LM: young, downing, rm: milner, albrighton, Stkr: care, heskey, gabby, fonz and tuncay. Would that team on the 15 august **** many people off. i dontthink its that bad at all. two players for every position, includes our youth and adds tuncay, that 3rd dimension we may require at vp when poor teams sit very deep, and we need to break them down. it would only cost 4mdistin and 8m tuncay.

I'm not of the "MON is the Messiah school" of thought. The capitulations against Stoke City and CSKA Moscow, as well as the relegation form at the fag end of season 2008/09 speak for themselves. I believe MON is from the Brian Clough school of management, ie: Motivation not tactics (not surprising, considering MON is a former Cloughie player). The perceverence of 4-4-2 instead od 4-5-1/4-3-3 led to the decline of the Villa at the end of last season (as many of us know). The disruption to the squad because of the presense of E.Heskey was another factor. There was a good article on the matter in the News of the Screws. Heskey gets (has always got) a lot of undeserved abuse. He is a competent but not classy forward. Despite the signings of Downing and Delph, next season could be disastrous for the Villa if the 4-4-2 route one formation is retained. Chelsea dispatched with Scolari while in third (??) place because he was clearly not taking the club where they want to go. The notion that MON is "untouchable" despite everything he has done for the Villa is absurd. A.V.F.C is one English footballs great clubs. Forget about "cups", the league should be the medium to long term term aim. Arsenal and Liverpool are potentially in long term decline. This chance may not come again for a long time. Villa should aim for the stars, hopefully with MON at the helm, but with someone else if necessary.

So far we have spent next to nothing. Knight and Barry were both sold so we have only spent the outlay on Delph minus the income from Knight. Around £5M? That must surely mean that BIG business is still to be done, hopefully on a centre back

It won't be AVFC world cup winners in 2010, but maybe 2014 (Beckham age 40 on loan at AVFC from LA Galaxy scoring the winning penalty!) There are too many established old guard in there at the moment. AVFC players will be bit part at best this time round. Nice to see the MON sniping has more or less stopped and he's only signed 2 players. Role on Wigan. UTV
