'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Villa Boss Looks To Replace 'Heart' Of Team

Sky Sports and the Daily Star have quotes from Martin O'Neill agreeing that the 'heart' of the team has been ripped out with the departure of Gareth Barry to Manchester City and the retirement of defensive rock Martin Laursen.

The Villa boss, who has called for calm assuring fans they are on the case transfer wise, 'We are obviously going to improve the team. If we are going to try and improve this season then we need some players in. I will be expecting that to happen. I am hopeful we will have players coming into the football club. We are some numbers down but we are looking to put that right.'

Having seen Villa slip from Champions League contention to being pipped to 5th by Everton, MON knows he has to bring in more bodies, especially not that we've also lost Zat Knight to Bolton Wanderers and Stuart Taylor (who to be fair was never really in the picture since MON came) to Manchester City.

He again repeated that we need to bring in five players. Must admit, with the exits and the fact even before they left we were short on numbers, I'd think we need a few more... then again, it is easier to type that than do it I would guess!!!

'The answer to the question 'Are we extremely thin now?' is, 'Yes we are!' Also the fact is that we have signed a player who will not be fit for some time. So, yes, on the face of it, it looks pretty small. I would prefer to start the season with some of these extra players on board. I think that would be pretty important. The heart of the squad needs replacing. Yes, absolutely - and it will take money. No-one says there is X-amount to spend but you are constantly asking what can you afford.'

Villa do have the smallest squad in the league right now.

A mate, who wishes to remain anon (and NO, it isn't me, if it was I'd say and YES, I do have 'some' mates... I pay a fee but nevertheless...) said:

'our heart is gone' ..... 'MON..we tried to tell you that a few times……..and you should be in Brum bringing in new players…..smokey and his bandit can see to the trivialities of the peace cup…..as they did so with success as you sat banished in the stands…Five new players? Yes you are right Mon but if you brought in five Hare’s or Mules you’re going to add kidneys and giblets and you still wont have a heart……Now..do something nice before I need to see my cardiologist………Oh..and whilst we’re talking about organs…..go back to HART for Distin……!”

See, said it wasn't me, the Hart thing was too clever for me!

Must admit I stand by the fact that this transfer window has been a weird one for all apart from Man City and do think the track record is for late purchases but even last summer, late or not, Villa did spend a lot.

I would agree with 5 IF there are no more exits, ok Harewood and Salifou could go. The reason I think 5 is reasonable is that there are 2 or 3 youngsters that I expect to see in the squad next season, so if it 5 out say, and 5 in with 2 youngsters promoted then that would be ok, as far as I am concerned. I just hope the 5 coming in are of a similar quality to Downing.

Tell me something new! It is now July 30, its time that some action was seen instead of just words. I must admit, the No-one says there is X-amount to spend but you are constantly asking what can you afford.' comment is a little bit scary! Is this the first official oral blunder that confirms what we all feared that not much money is available?

Everyone (including Man Utd) is waiting for Man City and Real Madrid to stop there spending spree. There is no point anyone getting into a bidding war with City because they will ALWAYS win.

"Is this the first official oral blunder that confirms what we all feared that not much money is available?" I don't think so, v_de. It's a conscientious manager who treats his chairman's money as if it were his own. It's a pity politicians and bankers don't do the same ...

We need at least 8 new decent players. Any less and we simply won't be able to compete. SIMPLE. Pull your finger out Martin. NOW.

MON has just said this about Porto: "They have great contacts in South America and seem to be able to bring in Brazilian players regularly without encountering problems with work permits or visas." Is that another bloody excuse we're hearing?!

No - jesus - whatever he says someone HAS to turn it into an MON bashing. I suggest MON keeps schtum doesnt say a word - then all these MON bashers can have a field day. Say something - MON Bashing - Say nothing MON bashing. Sign someone still some MON bashing Sign no-one MON bashing - he's never gonna win. All he says is that there doesn't seem to be a problem getting visa's and permits in Spain - perhaps is a damn sight harder getting a visa and work permit here in the UK that's all.

5 quality signings who could walk into the team would be about spot on and I think from previous quotes, MON has said that's what he's trying to sign at the moment. Given the likes of Albrighton's display last night, I think 9m would be 9m too much on the likes of Bentley. I didn't feel this way a few weeks ago though. I think MON knows what he's doing and after last night's performance, particularly from the youngsters and Ash, I feel more confident. Who honestly would rather see expensive signings than seeing our young kids being given a chance? What's the point in a world class youth facility if we don't bring them through?

Johnny - love seeing youth players come through but don't get carried away with one match in a preseason friendly. We need proven top level quality for a long hard season and by my maths at least half a dozen just to stand still

We won the Championship with only 6 players in 1981 and Burnley (who do have the smallest squad) played 127 games last season with only 3 players in the team and still won promotion. Seriously, quality not quantity. And given it is very difficult to buy "known" quality because "known" quality always wants to go to a BIG club, or else we have to burst the bank - then the way forward is to buy relatively "unknown" quality. Young at 11m was in that category, but not many of them come along and make the gamble worth while. The real unknowns are the likes that Wigan seem to continually unearth such as Valencia. Palacios, Baines, etc all bought for next to nothing by todays prices and sold for big money. The other unknowns you can get really cheap are Bannan, Albrighton, the Fonz, Baker, Licaj etc ec. Go with the unknowns - not paying out fortunes for Spurs rejects.

Sorry AV - my fault - I know it's Portugal, just was replying while I was a little "angry" that a little comment would give someone the opportunity to have a go. Any way what do I know!. But you know what I meant didn't you??
