Sunday's Aston Villa Transfer Talk!!!

Ok, so we've covered the Jermaine Jenas nonsense (?) More Jenas Links Despite 'Not For Sale' Warning what else is there? Nothing great I'm afraid?!

Strong whispers that Arsenal defender Kolo Toure could be on his way to Aston Villa are being blown out the water because Manchester City have apparently agreed personal terms and are paying 15m for him. So there you go!

The News Of The World say that West Ham have put a 15million price tag on Matthew Upson. The England and former Arsenal defender is wanted by Spurs and has also been linked several times to Villa. Not sure we need any centre-backs though do we, we've got two?!?!?!? :o)

Looks like Spurs are starting to make moves now, they have had a 10million bid for Portsmouth and former Liverpool and Villa ... and Southampton...(!) striker Peter Crouch who could complete his move on Monday according to The Sunday Mirrror. Does that then free up Darren Bent and are Villa interested?! The News Of The World claim that Appy Arry is on the verge of signing Real Madrid striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar. Not seen ANY links to strikers for Villa for weeks and weeks. Are we not in the market for one at least? Heskey and Carew are big lads who pick up lots of injuries and Gabby is still young and developing and isn't - as yet at least, some say never will be - a 20 a season striker.

Ah, found a link to Darren Bent outwards, not to Villa though. The News of the World (haven't they been busy today!) say Sunderland will bid 15million for the 25-year-old England striker.

The Sunday Times claim that Spurs will also land 19-year-old Leeds United midfielder Fabien Delph who again has been strongly linked to Villa with some reports going as far as saying we've had bids turned down.

The News of the World say that Spurs right-back Alan Hutton is on his way out with Everton linked. Villa have been linked several times to the former Rangers man.

31-year-old Pompey defender Sylvain Distin is still being linked but Paul Hart says Portsmouth want to keep him. 'I think we are in talks with him and he is a great player, a great lad, a great leader so we don't want him to go anywhere,' The Star claim we've got the player and will unveil him this week after Distin told Pompey he would not be signing a new deal.

Then again the same article says we are going to push for Jermaine Jenas and claim Villa have been 'rocked' by the news that Stewart Downing might not be fit until Christmas. NO WE HAVE NOT BEEN ROCKED... everyone knew he might not be fit until December or even January. (Exclusive interview with MON: Click Here )

All has gone very quiet on the David Bentley links haven't they?!

I think there must be players coming in this week, they can't have let Zat Knight leave for Bolton Wanderers without at least one defender set to sign.

We havn`t replaced the liar yet, Martin Laursen and now Zat Knight. Why we have to sell before we replace is a big mystery, unless there is a set budget. I just hope we don`t off load 6 players a bring in 3, unless they are top EPL players.

i would hope for at least 5 more players; two center backs, two creative central midfielders and a striker. but - with a mere three weeks left til the wigan game (and only one week with MON's "two-week settling period" included), i really cannot see that happening. sad, sad, frustrating times to be a villa! haha - i say "more" players.. oh no :(

i'd certainly settle for - distin, upson, delph, defour and tuncay arriving this coming month. in that case, the hare could even go.

i would expect 6 more in now that zats left us and would rather hangeland than upson but upson would be second choice and maybe hutton for rb add all of starskys in there and all of them should cost erm 50-55M at top price we have only net spent around 5M so far if we were to get all them i reckon we would be alright

I think we needed 6 before Laursen, barry and Zat...so that's 9...minus Downing. I expect 8 new players come 1st day.

Of your 8 I hope that we have a free youth stepping up too.. I would settle for 5 new signings. We dont really need 30somthings unless they are really outstanding. distin, upson, delph, defour and tuncay would be just great. Downing and Bouma will be like new signings in Jan (one is!). Lets hope this season we bring through 1 or 2 good youth players.

MON needs a total change of approach in terms of gradually blooding some of our youngsters in the Premier, not just benching them at best, with 10 minutes to change things. Hopefully then 2 or 3 will show they are good enough to stay in the team. We can try things out in the League because we are never going to win it. We have absolutely no chance of challenging for the Champs League this season. A good season will be blooding a few youngsters, instead of senior players who have been given every opportunity to show what they can/ cannot do, and a good run in the cups, which should be our number one objective. Hopefully winning some silverware would then be a hugely successful season. Playing Gabby (the one youngter who has been very much tried and in my view is never going to be a striker), Heskey, Sidwell is deflating, they are never going to do it long term. Youngsters would be inconsistent and take time to bed in too, but they might get better, they might be top men. We were Reserve league winners again, and we have consistently done well at youth level. We are not a big enough club to buy in the top stars unless they are young and spotted early. Get them young is largely Man Utds and Arsenals approach too. If Delph is worth a gamble lets go for it. The likes of older players like Owen who cost nothing in transfer fees are an exception, but if our youngsters aren't up to it then we should off load them. But they might be good enough and they need to be properly tried in irrelevant competitions such as the League. Cahill was good enough - there may be others. Lets find out please. Villa for all the cups! PS I don't seriously think the League is "irrelevant", but the cups are clearly are best chance and should be given top billing - not treated as a sideshow.

I agree with the comment about Gabby never gonna be a striker, after all he's 22a massive 22 years of age and could only muster as many goals as Wayne Rooney (30m), 3 goals more than Berbatov (35m) and a massive two goals behind Torres and Robinho. How rubbish is that, I'd sell him down the dog and duck for some pork scratchings if I could.

Last night showed us we desperately need a striker who can score goals. Gabby and Heskey cant, and Carew needs competition to push him. A play maker midfielder, plus 2 centre backs and another dedicated right back as cover for Young. But what do I know that Martin O'Neill doesn't, I am just a window cleaner... which incidently gives you plenty of time for deep thinking! ;-) Guess we have to keep the faith! But I must agree, I like the sound of clarkamus list of incoming players! "Thumbsup"
