Part five of the summer long torture thread. Sorry, did I say torture, I meant TRANSFER thread. Last summer we filled about 10 or 11 of these up with article comments so lets see if we can't out do ourselves and maybe this time we'll all end up happy and positive with the incoming and outgoing players!?
So basically use this thread as you wish, who have you seen linked, who would you like in, which linked players would be good, bad or just plain ugly?

Ok here we go. Distin confirmed for £3m on tuesday followed by Hangeland for £9m on Thursday. We are also nearly there for Defour for £14m. Im well chuffed with those 3.

tarzansbrother - one of my first posts on this board was about those 3 - I WOULD LOVE it to be those three!! I know Laursen walks on water, and I loved Barry - but I may actually say we would be in a BETTER situation than last year if we pulled these deals off!! Somehow I dont think £9m will get Hangelaand, I can see City getting frustrated with Terry and Lescott moves and then will step in for him. Hope you are right though!

just read on daily star website we have won the race to sign distin after he turned down a contract extention and we will now bid 12m for jenas...rather defour but cant say its not a bad signing...tad expensive.wait extremely overpriced.

Jenas at £12m is far too high - we know what we are getting with him, and it aint a push for top-4 - no better than NRC or Sidwell, let alone Petrov. Trust me, we need to take some risks otherwise we just sell players on a year or two later. Young and Carew were risks and they paid off!! Lets get Defour in!!

The OS now reporting that Luke Young is struggling with a thigh injury. Deja va as we're going to start the season with no recognised right-back - Naughton and that Manelov fella are gone now so it leaves us with Lichaj or NRC to fill in that position. So frustrating!!!

today we are being linked with a move for michael johnson fee 8mil Rasmus Bengtsson, the Trelleborgs central defender who can also apparently play as a striker!!!aswell as bent. i want him but 14Mil...why not we keep saying we need players we have the money or so i am led to believe.

Bent would be a good signing, would complement our other forwards, he is a natural goalscorer which we are missing, would be very happy with Johnson he played Barry off the park a few seasons ago, would also like Distin and Turner 4 defenders, think we also need a right back not sure who maybe Hutton, and if we are really gonna go 4 it squad wise get in Bentley and Tuncay. Get rid of Harewood Salifoo and Osborne.

AlmightyVillanz91, i'll be honest, i haven't seen him recently...if that's true it'd explain a hell of a lot why he hasn't featured very much for City in a while. He didn't look like the sort, he genuinely looked like he'd be a very classy, hard working kid with a lot of talent. If we can get him for a decent price, i'd still take a gamble, what with our complete void of playing staff at the moment. I guess defenders are in more desperate need. To be honest, if we got 3 or 4 quality players in at this point, we would probably be alright for next season. We haven't got quantity, but we would have a fair amount of quality, and not just quality players, but almost all of them are utility players. Hard working, utility players who just want to play football is what MON looks for, and i can see a few more of those coming in. Realistic dream signings, Hangeland 9m, Distin 4m, Defour 14m, Huntelaar 18m (I honestly think that he could be persuaded, he wants Euro football at an english club, and if arsenal aren't interested, we're as good as any who would want him). More realistically, Distin 4m, Turner 7m, Bentley 10m, Tuncay 9m. I would be fairly happy with the last set, but it's still probably wishful thinking, even though all of them are well within getting, at a 30m outlay.

Levy is holding out to recover the money splashed on Bent, which it appears he can't, oops! At least MON buys players with potential (playing and financial) which means they are not bought at the peak of their value and sadly may explain why we will not see many top class 'arrivals' at Villa Park unless MON thinks the club will benefit from the investment. Any 'top dollar' player is a risk as it is likely their value will only go down hitting the finances of the club. MON is a very shrewd man and finacially astute.

I would love 5 or 6 quality players to come in, but maybe MON sees something we dont, we beat Porto with 10 men made up of mostly reserves, maybe we only need a couple of players and the Albrightons, clarks and Bannans will come good. what happened to Davies.

Well done to our youngsters who pulled off a massive result in beating Juve on pens! With one or two quality signings and these youngsters stepping up we may be ok afterall. Lets not get carried away though as we definately do still need quality brought in and I mean top notch if we can. Winning this cup will open some eyes on the continent and back home so maybe this could prove to be a handy platform for transfer talks. Ltes see Sneijder on loan with a view to a pernament deal, Bent or keane and Defour with Hangelaand. These signings would finish our squad of perfectly. With these we could make at least top 6 again and who knows from there, but without quality we will be also rans in top ten. Good news is though that we have our first of many trophies this season on its way back to VP along with a handy 2mil cheque :p. UTV.

I've just said this on the Delph article but there is a post on avfc.com about how impressed Leeds are with the way we have handled this bid. They also say that they have resisted bids from other clubs since we agreed this fee. Hopefully that means that they are telling Citeh and Spurs where to stick it (in the politest way of course).... Good work villa on getting delph. As a spurs fan im looking forward to this season, I think the race between spurs, villa and everton could be very close this year (with potentially one or both of city or arsenal ending up at a similar point), should be interesting. Shame about Barry but I really like the players you have at villa, doing what jol did for a bit at spurs, young english players, good attacking football. The Sniejder rumour is an interesting one. He would be the 'biggest' signing we have EVER made. In terms of the prestige of the player and financially!! However, I think with a midfield of 8/9 quality options (Young, Downing, Milner, Gardner, Petrov, Reo-Coker, Sidwell, Albrighton, Bannan) we are done with midfielders unfortunatley as I would love Sneijder or Defour and a few defenders!! Maybe another striker too!!

If we don't sell him we should loan him out to improve as he won't figure anywhere else than in our reserves to help our youth out. As for France moves?? Would like to see us get Keane to give us another option up front as Heskey and Carew are injury prone. We defo need a big signing defender to sure up our leaky defence. It will be an interesting battle between the two Brads for a starting jersey and the kind of competition that MON wants for places. Maybe Guzan for Cup matches and Friedal for league matches? I can see some of our peace cup youngsters playing a bit part but they aren't our answer to push for top four just yet as we do need proven quality coming in. I do hope that they get some playing time though and may well do given our small squad. Does anybody think that MON will sign anymore players? I think I read somewhere that MONs net spending is just 2million. Thats not what we were hoping for. I still rather have Knight back than 4.5million quid. I really hope MON can capture Hangeland or someone of that calibre. I wish we tied up senderos but alas we are to keep waiting. Also, maybe a swap deal sending shorey to the rovers for warnock?

Really excited by Sniejder links, not like O'Neill to actually mention a players name in press conferences with regards to links. He did so with Sneijder. Which is essentially where MON ends up at the end of most Transfer windows and why he then has to buy players he dosen't really want. i.e Shorey, Knight, Harewood, Fast Midget winger from spurs(can't remember his name), Salifou etc. So expect signings like BEYE, Campbell. I really really hope I'm wrong.

funny that of the players we have signed all would be playing in leagues below the premier league. im not complaining as i like the business we have done so far. i think it speaks to MON's thinking that he can get the best out of players and he hasnt done anything to prove that thinking wrong. still need a little more though. i do however think that davies and cuellar will be a good partnership but we could use a couple more CB of that standard for depth and cup runs. oh and ofcourse the dutchman would be fantastic to.

Tick Tock Tick Tock.........surely still most of the budget left to sepnd. I desperately want us to spend £35M on 2 top class players. A centre back to sure up the back line and a top striker or midfielder. I think we can score a lot of goals from midfield next year so i don't mind whether it's a forward or a mid player as long as they are top quality

I reckon we will get Wheater this week before Wigan game. I think he wanted Distin cheaper and has been quoted £5m or so and realises for a few extra million he can have a younger player with potential in Wheater. Dunne will come when City get Lescott or Upson (but we will have to wait until end of August probably). Once Wheater is in O'Neill will have pressure off slightly and probably happily wait until Jan to spend again - but I think he will try up to the 31st for a dynamite signing - Van Der Vaart, Sneijder (either probably on loan possibly as they look for a Champions League club in a starting XI rather than bench at Real) and a centre-forward. Who? I really dont know. In an ideal world Wheater, Dunne/Distin, Sneijder and a striker will arrive. If we didnt already have Heskey I would love Ashton but think an alternative type of striker is needed. A wild card signing however could be young Turner at Hull - possibly a Harewood plus cash deal could be an option?? May cost £10m plus but what do you think?

He then sunk into a deeper role at West Ham and was injury prone, yes so maybe a risk. Anyway, I dont think he would be any better or add anything different to that of Heskey or Carew. I would have liked Darren Bent but honestly cant think of anyone else up front. We have two 'little and large' strikeforces (and Harewood) and fail to see anyone likely to add much to us!! I doubt very much if O'Neill is even looking for a striker!! I can't see much wrong with him, agree with you johnmurphy, I thought most of the time he played last year (especially towards the end and in Europe) he looked fine and that was despite not getting much time on the field.

OK, fair enough johnmurphy and Mr Fear. Just trying to get some debate going about the back four. Many of the posts on Vital Villa seems to be about Real Madrid castoffs. Nothing much wrong with Shorey agreed (didn't see much wrong with Zat either as a squad player), but at 20 years old Bale could be a bargain. Great sides are built from the back. At the moment Villa's defence is the sides soft underbelly. Would like to see several quality defenders in to fill the gaping hole left by M.Laursen.

We should bear in mind Freddie can play centre back as he has done for Holland, so Bale could be an option as competition for Shorey. Freddie would need to be fully fit though and I would still like to see a quality replacement for Laursen.

We should bear in mind Freddie can play centre back as he has done for Holland, so Bale could be an option as competition for Shorey. Freddie would need to be fully fit though and I would still like to see a quality replacement for Laursen.

A question occurs........Why did we ever sell Gary Cahill? Why did that ever seem like a good idea? Maybe there were reasons beyond what i'm aware of but he's a class act and also young and english. its really hard to tell whats going to happen with transfers now IMO tuncay would be a great buy and if we could offload marlon as part of the deal that would be even better, wheater has said he is gonna stay at the riverside so i cant see that one happening, portsmouth wont sell distin and man city are unlikely to wanna sell dunne and this international friendly doesnt help at all to go into the season as we are in defence is dangerous to say the least lets hope we can sort it out today

Reading O'Neills comments about Heskey (and our other strikers) I am 99% certain we will be buying no other attackers this summer. He obviously thinks Heskey, Carew, Gabby and The Fonz will do enough with Young, Milner, Downing and Albrighton supplying the bullets!

The Times say we have had a bid of £4m rejected for Warnock - they want £7.5m. I really do not see the need unless Bouma is miles away from a recovery (or soon to announce his retirement)!! I would much rather we got two centre-backs in this week and use the remaining time in the window to look at other players.

Still think Wheater and Huth would be excellent signings. One hopes MON isn't gazumped by Citeh who also need a quality center back. Decent central defenders seem to be at a premium at the moment. The Villa probably need two.

Apparently Sneijder is staying at Real after being "promised" games next season.....Van der Vaart is looking for a move though. They'll probably both be in action agains Ingerland, one in each half. Both like to play behind the striker(s).
