Zat Knight Sold... What IS Going On?!??!

I've got to admit, I'm confused. I thought Villa were looking to build a squad?

Well, maybe we are, but in that building process they've sold Zat Knight - bought by Martin O'Neill from Fulham - to Bolton Wanderers.

The move has been confirmed on the Bolton site with Gary Megson saying 'Zat has plenty of Premier League experience and has played at the highest level with England.'

The Mirror this morning said that Zat flew out with the Villa squad to Spain, then had to fly home to seal the deal and then jetted off with Bolton to Holland last night on their pre-season tour.

So now we are 2 defenders down following the retirement of Martin Laursen.

Now, I never thought we should have bought Zat in the first place, he was average at Fulham and proved similar at Villa apart from a few decent games last season. However, especially after we sold Gary Cahill a fine defender and top prospect, surely at the very least Zat gave us squad presence whilst we are so low on numbers?

Increasingly confusing this football lark, maybe Villa have two defenders lined up and all will make sense. Don't think the purchase and sale within a season or two policy that MON seems to have will ever make sense mind you.

Our poll yesterday asked 'should Villa sell Zat Knight?'

56% said no, keep him as a squad member.

30% voted yes, if the reported 4.5m is correct. 9% followed through saying yes, at any price!

Only 4% considered him good enough to keep as a 1st team and 1% were unsure.

Baffling... or will the cunning plan all become clear in the days and weeks to come?!

fear totally agree with the knight/cahill comments, and like you say it would be a very surprising sale considering we needed a cb before we sold knight, personally i believe that 2 cbs are allready lined up and will be signed when we get back, knight went for 4.5M the fee portsmouth want for distin, so id say were in for distin and campbell, would that suffice? i wouldnt be dissapointed, although it does not solve the problem longterm.

On the question why buy Zat Knight only to sell him a couple of years down the line - well, it came about at the back of a season where we ended 11th (and 16th the season before) and Aston Villa was probably not THE club top quality players wanted to be. IMO a perfectly understandable and reasonable purchase at the time. However we're a better team now and can attract better players so the standard on the squad will keep improving. The building of the squad is coming along nicely. Assuming we have two new CB's lined up of course :-)

Why the fuss? half of the people on here did nothing but slag Knight off anyway. Surely you build a club by buying what you need then shedding the weakest and buying stronger to replace. If the window was shut I would share some of the views above. But it isn't and this must be the clearest sign yet that things are about to happen. Maybe Bolton said take it or leave it now so we took it in the knowledge of other happenings. Just watch this space is my thought.

Lets see what happens.. don't be so foolish to call for MON's head!!! some perspective.. Zat knight is highly average. not a top 6 defender..(worlds best when he equalised against arsenal!!) so MON surely has someone in the pipeline. I'd suspect Distin is very close to signing. BUT PLEASE CALM DOWN... 3 weeks to go till the start of the season and 5 weeks till the transfer window closes.. relax and lets enjoy seeing our hot young prospects in the PEACE cup.

I know we need replacements but let's get some perspective here, it's Zat bloomin' Knight. Breathe people, breathe... It's not the ideal preparation but MON is what he is, and letting your blood pressures go through the roof isn't necessary. Lets get this straight - and I really mean this - the squad is NOT small. What it is, is lacking in quality competition. We need in more QUALITY. If MON doesn't do that, then fair enough, I'll join the list of people gunning for his head. But until then, I'll just be amazed that we (apparently) managed to make 1m profit on a defender who in his late 20's still makes mistakes like someone in his late teens.

Personally I've completely given up attempting to comprehend Martin O'Neill and his transfer dealings. Let me say initially though that I'm against the sale as is, because its another squad member now gone, a squad member who needs replacing, and that before O'Neill even begins to set about strengthening the quality/numbers that we had last season. The much maligned Knight, often criticised unfairly in my opinion, was arguably our best central defender last season (Laursen apart) when given the opportunity. I'm sorry to see him go, I just hope that we bring in a better quality replacement, but I'm not holding my breath. As things stand right now, it looks very much to me as if its going to be another case of same old/same old next season, with O'Neill bemoaning the lack of numbers in the squad, long before the autumn is out. Its getting old Mart, its getting very old.

i can only think that MON knows what he is doing, (we can but hope). I am sorry to see Zat go, for 2 reasons, the first being (and I have said this many times on the forum) I do not think he let Aston Villa down at all, he performed the role he was bought in to do as a backup dependable Centre Half, he was arguably our most consistent in that role last year. secondly sorry to see him go as a fellow Villa Fan.... he has lived the dream and I guess it must be a wrench for him to leave, maybe he feels he has the chance of more first team appearances at bolton and just maybe the manager has told HIM what is going on and he can see his chances at Villa being limited. Anyhow I would like to thank him for all of his efforts and wish him every success in the future....not a player I think should be or will be booed on his return.....I do hope not anyway

MON blamed him for our demise last third of the season and had a good offer for someone who he doesn't trust so sold him. I know we want a larger squad but there's no point having a weak link in that squad. If he's not good enough for the first team (which he clearly isn't ) then he's not reliable/good enough to sit on the bench incase he gets called into action and cocks up!! Lets be honest, he never would have been bought if he wasn't a Villa fan!!

Knight out and a quality replacement in would be very good. I believe the fourth centre back in a squad should be a promising youngster, and do we not have a couple of candidates at the club for that role? BUT, if it's Knight out and either Campbell or Distin in, then it's a pointless exercise. Unfortunately, O'Neill seems to conduct pointless exercises on a regular basis - with Zat Knight himself being an example. Knight isn't a terrible player, but like so many others, he was never of the requisite quality to make a real difference to the quality of the team.

Barring Mon having two CB's already signed, this situation is laughable. Just imagine if curtis has an injury. We DON'T have another CB. Maybe Carew is being converted to be a CB? Seriously though, Zat is a squad player but I could definately see a role for him in the team even if we signed another 2 CB's. So what's the logic of selling him? Particularly since we are linked with two very old and now very average CBs (distin and sol).

Stop my moaning erv?? The first time I've been in here for 3 months so you are a little misguided in your comments. I have no problem with MON but when you post ambiguous comments it's quite funny especially when you call someone you don't know a moron for something that you think they are thinking... very strange. Don't worry though I'm sure the Fear will remove my comment for suggesting that I may be a moron based on something you think about me!

I've heard a rumour that 3 signings will be announced on Monday, 2 defenders, one of which is Distin, and an expensive midfielder.

I really do not, for one minute think that O'Neil would have sold Knight off without a couple of CDs in the bag, just wait for the signings fellas. Whilst Knight meant well and tried hard, the Prem and a top 4 shooting team is not a place for meant well and tried hardest. Thanks for your industry Zat and gl (but not too much at Bolton)

the more you think about it, the more it seems 'obvious' that there HAS to be a player or two incoming, he would never have sold a player unless he has another ... surely... no, no, he can't have. There will be arrivals next week... there!

Regardless of whether a player is already lined up, Zat isn't, wasn't and won't be good enough so he had to go. A youngster, Bouma or even Carew ;-D would be better

Zat Knight is not good enough for Villa, appreciate his efforts, but do not appreciate his mistakes.

I just want to say, im gutted to see Zat go as i think last season was his best for us and he gave me the best moment of a home game when he scored against the gunners! I do agree with others tho about how its probably best for him to goas long as we replace with quality and not players like Campbell and Distin. I dont think it was his decision really. (about a week ago, he said on AVFC that he wanted the chance to prove himself at Villa next year). Best of luck to Zat, im sure he wont be booed when he comes back. I know who im saving it for :-p

When remembering his moment against the gunners I gotta remember his game and goal against Chelsea (maybe his debut?) when we did 'em and doug shook romans hand. Great moment by a Villa fan for Villa fans (Zat not Doug)

Always gotta love a Villa fan playing for Villa. Cheers Zat - you've served your purpose but the club are moving onto bigger and better things. I think Distin will be coming in early next week and MON will be negotiating to bring 2 or 3 more players in quickly after that. I am frequently puzzled by the goings on at the club and although confident in MON's ability to do his job - his excuses (small squad) are wearing a bit thin. He know's what he's doing but has a tendancy to resurrect careers or bring players through when all we want is a proven quality player.... Not too much to ask for?

Distin, Hangeland, Senderos, Jenas and Tuncay. Don't panic, Bouma can play CB if needs be.
