Colchester Fan Interview Ahead Of Friendly

Matt_Us from Vital Colchester has done a quick fans interview with us

Q: Colchester who...?!...only kidding. Must be a long time since you played a Premiership team?

A: Well, yes and no! We played a few of the newer top flight sides during our two years in the Championship.

The last pre-season friendly against a PL team, in summer 2007-8 Vs Bolton, proved a great workout, although we lost narrowly. Our new striker at the time, Clive Platt, was dubiously sent off for an apparent elbow and missed the start of that season. Hopefully it won’t happen again, else I’ll not mind waiting another two years for the PL visit!

Q: Any Villa connections to tell us about?

A: I’m a little stumped! Will you count the fact that our manager, Paul Lambert, is highly-rated by Martin O’Neil from their Celtic days? We borrowed your striker, Sam Williams, as a result but, don’t worry, we gave him back after a month! Maybe more young Villains will be heading our way soon, who knows!

Q: Ah, a new Community Stadium it is then! Do you guys miss Layer Road?

A: Yes, very much so, but a move was inevitable. Having waited over thirty years for the Council to even entertain the idea of a new ground – and some scandalous talk in 2007 of us possibly having to share with Ipswich – it was about him. There’s been a sort of bedding in period and a lot of change, so next season hopefully both home form and atmosphere will improve.

Q: Should we tell MON to bring his chequebook and pro-Villa charm offensive...?

A: You want to nab our next bring young thing? At the moment, we’re run out!

Nobody like Greg Halford, Lomana Lua or Gerorge Elokobi is left on the books. Some fans get a bit upset that so many former U’s players make it the PL level having left us, but it’s also a testament to the quality we have had here in recent times.

Q: Any odd fact to impart about Colchester United?

A: Erm, you might need to lend us some balls! The Council were worried about ours flying away, since we’re so close to a section of the A12 motorway at this ground.

If a defender decides to impersonate Peter Kay in that old beer advert, just hoofing it a few times, we could have to call the whole thing off!!

I'll give you a link - Mark Kinsella? 180 appearances at Col U where he started his career and 21 for the Villa. Looking forward to the game tomorrow.

Looking forward to the game, hoping and expecting more of our youngsters get an extended opportunity to shine. I'd certainly like to see young McGurk get an hour or so, see exactly how he's progressing after experiencing that horrific run of injuries that really set him back. Barry Bannan and Marc Albrighton too, both youngsters who will surely be pushing hard for inclusion in Mart's first team squad for the upcoming premiership campaign. Good to get the opportunity to see Colchester's new home. Yes, should be an enjoyable day.

Like Matt says, wouldn't mind a few of your youngsters on loan next season, anyone you'd recommend? Up the U's!
