Well reports in the press seem to be insisting that Villa defender Zat Knight could be offloaded by the end of the week with Bolton and Wolves being 'strongly linked' (whatever that means!) however the quotes on the official site seem to suggest otherwise as the 6'6' former Fulham man says he thinks he is the man to replace retired Villa captain Martin Laursen.
He said on AVTV that the team will miss Laursen and wishes him luck for his future before adding that Laursen's loss does give others an opportunity to step up to the plate.
'and hopefully that can be me. I want to give myself a good pre-season and then be in the side when the new campaign starts. It's been good to have a break but it's nice to get back to reality too. It's back to business now. The off season is about relaxing and recuperating but now it's back to work.'
He also says how tough pre-season training is but adds they are all happy to be back at it and seeing each other. 'We haven't really kept in a great deal of contact over the past six weeks so it's nice to hear the stories about where they've been and what they've been up to.'

The full international and England U21 players are yet to return but will no doubt be doing so shortly.
Can you see why we'd be looking to sell Zat? As I've said in the transfer gossip article for today :
The Express&Star say that Zat Knight might be 'offloaded' by the end of this week, with Bolton looking the most likely destination BUT ONLY if we are able to bring in players first. The report claims he is rated at just £2.5million, done from £3million in last weeks press talk... what has he done for his value to fall so much recently!??! lol Why would we be looking to sell the £3.5million signing from Fulham?
The Express&Star also claim that we have our sights set on Newcastle defender Sebastien Bassong, Portsmouth's Sylvain Distin and / or West Ham's Matthew Upson all of whom have been linked several times in the press.

You've got to love the media during the transfer windows, anything for a few extra column inches and if you believe them today Zat Knight will be a Bolton player by the end of the week.
Now this isn't really surprising as ever since the end of last season there have been rumours about Knight leaving to join either Blues, Wolves and most recently Bolton and whilst he's a good squad player and a devout Villan, very few would argue he's of the quality sufficient enough to warrant a regular first team place if our hopes this season are to again make a run on the Top 4.
The Express and Star state that Gary Megson looks set to have won the race for the centre half but the only snag is Villa require a replacement in first as Monny is fully aware of our frustrations at the size and talent of the squad given the departures of both Gareth Barry and Martin Laursen.
He doesn't plan on allowing anyone else to leave and further fuel the feelings of discontent until he makes a few moves of his own.
The immediate problem money wise that fans will jump on if this deal goes through is that Zat cost us £3.5 million when we signed him from Fulham, but the E&S suggest that a fee of only £2.5 has been/is agreeable.
However, for all the sense that does make as a potential deal, Zat himself is on the official site this morning suggesting that he could be Martin Laursen's replacement.
Speaking of being delighted that with pre season training under way it's 'back to business', he explained the obvious loss that Laursen was to the club, he further spoke about his desire to gain that first team spot now it's open.
Now if the plan was an informal/provisional bid has been accepted for Knight it makes no sense whatsoever to assume the player would not know, and in those circumstances to put him on the OS talking about his aims for representing Villa this season. But it wouldn't be the first time something strange occurs would it.
