Sunday's Aston Villa Bumper Transfer Talk

Just a reminder for those that think it is all doom and gloom, not that many top moves have been made yet and looking at the list of ins and outs, there aren't many that I would say we've missed? Useful page this on Sky.. www.skysports.com/transfers

I covered the Ashley Young press talk linking the winger with Manchester United and Spurs in another article: Ashley Young Linked To Man Utd & Spurs

Blimey, I'm really surprised at this one. England U21 and Manchester United young striker Fraizer Campbell has moved to Sunderland for just £3.5m. Nothing to do with Villa but there you go!

Well, when I say nothing to do with us, it does lead to a rumour that we'll not go for 25-year-old Spurs and England striker Darren Bent who had been wanted by Sunderland. A report in the Sunday Mercury by Billy Boy, says Sunderland's interest has now 'cooled' and claims that Villa are thinking about bidding.

All depends on the price Spurs want, they paid £16.5million but surely would get nowhere near that now? As reporter last week, papers claimed that Sunderland had a £12million bid turned down, surely we'd not be looking to pay more? The Mercury also claim that Spurs would be willing to make a payment to Bent to facilitate a move as his £90k a week wages have deterred other clubs from taking him.

As we've said before, there aren't many better places for English players to come to in order to push their England credentials, Fabio Capello has been very complimentary of Villa and the young English side we are building... then again, that didn't stop £areth Barry leaving!

The Daily Mail suggests that former Reading and Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell fancies a Villa Park exit and would like to move to Fulham. They also link us once again with £6million rated Leeds teenage midfielder Fabian Delph.

Lots of talk about Villa still wanting to go for Boro winger Stewart Downing despite the fact he is out injured and might not return until Christmas time (although one report says November, obviously the reporter will know better than his manager and medical team!)

A report by Chris Bascombe in the News Of The World says Villa will bid £12million for the winger... well, his report says striker but I've not seen Downing play as a striker, so I'll stick with winger if you don't mind! Another paper claims we'll pay £10million for the 'crocked' star.

Liverpool and Spurs are also said to be interested by Martin O'Neill is willing to go for him now whilst he recovers in order to get his man.

The report says the soon to be 25-year-old is interested in a move and awaits permission from Boro to talk to Villa. They say MON will use Ashley Young on the right and Downing on the left. So where for James Milner? A new free role or central midfield perhaps?

The News of the World also link Villa with Portsmouth defender Sylvain Distin for what they call 'a bargain £2m'.

One snippet says Villa ... oh actually, this is just a repeat linking us with Sporting Lisbon and Portugal international Miguel Veloso who is also wanted by Bolton.

The Mirror say that Wolves and Bolton are both after Villa defender Zat Knight and rate the former Fulham man at around £3million!

Fulham manager Roy Hodgson still hopes to fight off interest for Norwegian defender Brede Hangeland from Villa, Arsenal and Manchester City. Hodgson said: 'He's a Fulham player, he's got a two-year contract at Fulham. We don't really intend to sell him, and he's very happy at the club. We've even offered him a new contract, an improved contract, which I think he's mulling over. Because he hasn't immediately jumped at the chance of a new contract, people are suggesting that there will be some movement. But I'll be surprised if he moved.'

The News of the World say we are looking at Werder Bremen playmaker Mesut Ozil. Ok, that isn't too bad a foreign name for me to remember how to spell, so I'd be happy with that transfer!

The report says that we've given up on Leeds midfielder Fabian Delph after having a £6m offer rebuffed so will instead bid twice that for the German U21 player.

A couple of snippets about players we've been linked with but are going elsewhere?

The Sunday Express says Sunderland are favourites to sign Arsenal defender Philippe Senderos for £5m.
The Mail on Sunday claim that Sunderland will beat the other would be suitors to the signature of Portsmouth striker Peter Crouch who is also tempting Fulham.

A report today claims that England and MLS La Galaxy midfielder David Beckham might look to do a loan move back to the Premier League. I'm just ruminating as to whether Villa should pop in and grab him! There was that rumour earlier in the summer linking us! Would It Be Folly For Villa To Lure Beckham?

as for the Carew one, if this was January I'd say he was a guaranteed exit but Villa would be mad to sell him now unless we have TWO TOP strikers incoming at the same time... which I can't see myself. Suppose only way they would get rid of him is if he is playing his face up saying he wants out... (IF... not saying that he is at all... ) If they got rid of him then that would surely sound alarm bells to other players at Villa? All pie in the sky press stuff at the moment, lets hope it remains that way, we need incoming players not exits this week!

dont like downing think hes very overrated and to spend 12mil on a players thats out till christmas does not seem a wise move to me! Mikeyvilla85 he is 25 , has 5/7 years left in him, he knows the premier league and the requirements, he has a great left foot, enough pace, can pick out a low pass, good pro, good brain, still developing, england caps and is a typical mon success signing, stuart downing yes please £10m, and because hes injured itll be like a new signing come january, hell be fully charged. sitting here worrying about mons transfer ability and who we may sign/sell wont change anything as we all know. i personally love the transfer window its so exciting/nerveracking everyone adding there two pence worth, who we should and should not sign, the odd joker from other teams telling us this and that. but one things is for sure mart/john/steve and souts are all busy at work, they along with some of us have probably shortlisted around 10 players for possible replacements for the 2 we have lost plus the extra we need, now im not saying we will get everyone we want but ive said it before an ill say it again, come the start of the season ash/john and anyone else WE want to keep will still be here, if there not then the funds recieved have to be great enough to justify what weve lost or we will all be p****ed off, the mon/lerner/villa blueprint was allways going to be a slower burner, i subscribe to the martin oniell politics of football, it really is the right AND only approach UNTILL you can seriously and continuously compete with the man scum and the chelskis of the prem as a football team and a brand, BUT we are on that road trust me, players in deff; naughton distin hangeland mid; bentley downing defour attck; tuncay, bent.

Downing seems extremely likely, unfortunately. Young leaving is inevitable, whether it be this summer, next summer, or somewhere in between. Sidwell to Fulham would be fantastic, although it would be the flimsiest of silver linings in a very cloudy prospect.

sidwell to fulham fantastic? are you a fulham fan? im sure sidwell will prove himself this year we saw moments from him last term i wouldnt want anyone apart from harewood to leave now as he has no future with us all the rest are capable of getting in the side and as for young leaving i think the only time he will leave is if we never for-fill our potential to match his own and im confident were going in the right direction. roll on this week transfer incomings to villa park

We're obviously in the market for players, surely by now we must realise that MON's and Villas policy is discreet, more than likely to prevent deals being hi-jacked by the likes of Man City etc. The club knows what we need to move forward, and all these links that turn out to be rubbish were never in our plans anyway, just media crap because they don't really know what's going on at Villa Park. Of course we'll strengthen the squad, MON isn't stupid, let's just see what the next week or 2 brings us, after that, we should probably start to worry because the new season will almost be upon us. And I would seriously doubt Carew is going anywhere, or Sidwell, just ignore the press, they need to sell papers with whatever bulls**t they can come up with.

not sure Matt_Us, didn't see the best of him last year, he didn't have a pre-season as he was injured, got a small run in the team then got another injury, so he never really got into any sort of rythmn for the season. Depends who we buy really, if we bring in a couple of top quality midfielders, then maybe he woudln't be a loss but at the moment our numbers are very low and so if we really want to compete, not only in the league but also Europe and cups, then we need him along with the others we have in the squad.

I hadn't used to be a fan of Stewart Downing, however I must admit that he impressed me the two times I saw him play against us last season, and the very same sentiments relate to my views on Tuncay. I'd welcome them both to Brummagem B6, believing them to be two genuine quality players, players who will definitely improve our lot. Get in there Mart, lets stop this ******footing around, lets get some business signed and sealed.

Why am I being censored? Oh well, at least the gist of my message is clear. Young Delph seems as if he is one tremendous prospect, but seemingly Grandad Smurf, aka Ken Bates, is playing hardball and demanding a sum of money that Mart doesn't seem willing to pay. Wonder if money is an issue this summer? An issue in that MON doesn't have much to spend. I must admit I have concerns, we just dont seem ready and willing to speculate.
