Just a reminder for those that think it is all doom and gloom, not that many top moves have been made yet and looking at the list of ins and outs, there aren't many that I would say we've missed? Useful page this on Sky.. www.skysports.com/transfers
I covered the Ashley Young press talk linking the winger with Manchester United and Spurs in another article: Ashley Young Linked To Man Utd & Spurs
Blimey, I'm really surprised at this one. England U21 and Manchester United young striker Fraizer Campbell has moved to Sunderland for just £3.5m. Nothing to do with Villa but there you go!
Well, when I say nothing to do with us, it does lead to a rumour that we'll not go for 25-year-old Spurs and England striker Darren Bent who had been wanted by Sunderland. A report in the Sunday Mercury by Billy Boy, says Sunderland's interest has now 'cooled' and claims that Villa are thinking about bidding.
All depends on the price Spurs want, they paid £16.5million but surely would get nowhere near that now? As reporter last week, papers claimed that Sunderland had a £12million bid turned down, surely we'd not be looking to pay more? The Mercury also claim that Spurs would be willing to make a payment to Bent to facilitate a move as his £90k a week wages have deterred other clubs from taking him.
As we've said before, there aren't many better places for English players to come to in order to push their England credentials, Fabio Capello has been very complimentary of Villa and the young English side we are building... then again, that didn't stop £areth Barry leaving!
The Daily Mail suggests that former Reading and Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell fancies a Villa Park exit and would like to move to Fulham. They also link us once again with £6million rated Leeds teenage midfielder Fabian Delph.
Lots of talk about Villa still wanting to go for Boro winger Stewart Downing despite the fact he is out injured and might not return until Christmas time (although one report says November, obviously the reporter will know better than his manager and medical team!)
A report by Chris Bascombe in the News Of The World says Villa will bid £12million for the winger... well, his report says striker but I've not seen Downing play as a striker, so I'll stick with winger if you don't mind! Another paper claims we'll pay £10million for the 'crocked' star.
Liverpool and Spurs are also said to be interested by Martin O'Neill is willing to go for him now whilst he recovers in order to get his man.
The report says the soon to be 25-year-old is interested in a move and awaits permission from Boro to talk to Villa. They say MON will use Ashley Young on the right and Downing on the left. So where for James Milner? A new free role or central midfield perhaps?
The News of the World also link Villa with Portsmouth defender Sylvain Distin for what they call 'a bargain £2m'.
One snippet says Villa ... oh actually, this is just a repeat linking us with Sporting Lisbon and Portugal international Miguel Veloso who is also wanted by Bolton.
The Mirror say that Wolves and Bolton are both after Villa defender Zat Knight and rate the former Fulham man at around £3million!
Fulham manager Roy Hodgson still hopes to fight off interest for Norwegian defender Brede Hangeland from Villa, Arsenal and Manchester City. Hodgson said: 'He's a Fulham player, he's got a two-year contract at Fulham. We don't really intend to sell him, and he's very happy at the club. We've even offered him a new contract, an improved contract, which I think he's mulling over. Because he hasn't immediately jumped at the chance of a new contract, people are suggesting that there will be some movement. But I'll be surprised if he moved.'
The News of the World say we are looking at Werder Bremen playmaker Mesut Ozil. Ok, that isn't too bad a foreign name for me to remember how to spell, so I'd be happy with that transfer!
The report says that we've given up on Leeds midfielder Fabian Delph after having a £6m offer rebuffed so will instead bid twice that for the German U21 player.
A couple of snippets about players we've been linked with but are going elsewhere?
The Sunday Express says Sunderland are favourites to sign Arsenal defender Philippe Senderos for £5m.
The Mail on Sunday claim that Sunderland will beat the other would be suitors to the signature of Portsmouth striker Peter Crouch who is also tempting Fulham.
A report today claims that England and MLS La Galaxy midfielder David Beckham might look to do a loan move back to the Premier League. I'm just ruminating as to whether Villa should pop in and grab him! There was that rumour earlier in the summer linking us! Would It Be Folly For Villa To Lure Beckham?
