Would It Be Folly For Villa To Lure Beckham?

Would it be folly for Villa to try to do something audacious and try to grab England star David Beckham? Would it help put us on the map, get bums on seats, generate a bit of excitement and also help us help him in his bid to be fit and ready for the World Cup in 2010 which is bound to be his England swan-song?

Seriously, why not? If you don't ask, you don't get!?

A report in the News of the World by Rob Beasley says that if Beckham see's his 'dream return' to AC Milan fall though, he would consider a move back to the Premiership.

Where better than Villa - amongst those likely to be interested - as we've said many times, Villa is popular with the England manager Fabio Capello and I'm sure Beckham could teach our youngsters a thing or two and attract some good attention to Villa.

Don't ask me where he'd fit and who would have to move for him though, I'm not the manager, I just type things ... !

Becks is currently back at MLS team LA Galaxy following his six months on loan at AC Milan, a club he obviously fell in love with having seen an interview by him not long back. However if a new deal there can't be arranged, he will be looking for another loan deal when Galaxy's season ends.

They quote a 'pal' of his... lol. I've not seen that before...!

'David's had a chat with England boss Fabio Capello and has been told he has to keep on playing at a high level in the run-up to the next World Cup if he wants to be involved in South Africa. So David is certain to go out on loan again once he's completed the MLS season. AC are the favourites. He had such a good time there and was so impressed with the club and the people there.'

Vital Villa asked on 13 June 2009, David Beckham for a season?

Results were: Ooooh, yes please 87% Don't be so stupid, no way 13%

would certainly generate some interest and press at Villa Park, surely a bums on seat player would be just what we need to sell out all season?

The man is the most committed footballer I have ever seen. He always gives 200% where ever he plays(Regardless what Landon wherever says). The man has the spark to spray the ball to each wing with ease and Young and Milner would benefit no end from having him here. Get him now, even if it is for a few months!!!!!

As a footballer, I would say it's folly. He's totally over-rated imo, a one trick pony. But I suppose it would be good for sales and help spread the Villa brand around the world.

I know it was against weak opposition but Young was loving the service he got from Becks in the last England game. Sign him up.

It's misguided of him to say that: "In 17 years, I have played with the biggest teams in the world and the biggest players and not once been criticised for my professionalism." He goes on to admit in the same interview on yesterday's BBC Sport Bulletin (12 July) that people are questioning him all the time. Fans questioned him after WC '98, for a start. And then there's that opposite rare moment, the story where Journlaists applauded him into the room after his FK Vs Greece. He should really say "I've never been critisised by a team-mate one in 17 years." I'm sure the whole SAF boot-flying thing was surrounded by critique, possibly from Sir Alex. He's right to talk about the LA Galaxy stuff out of the public eye, but still I think he shouldn't say he's been above critisising.

Two years ago I heard a rumour from a friend who has dealings with AVFC that we might be looking at getting Beckham on loan for part of the season. This guy knew all about the Maloney signing, homesickness, and departure, so I was surprised when this did not happen. Maybe we are going to finally get round to it?

Cant ever see it happening, but if the opportunity arose to compete for his services on a short term deal whatever, it might not be too bad an idea to grab the opportunity to sit down and talk with the guy. He may be at the tail-end of his career, but it would be somewhat arrogant of us not to believe that in this stage of our transition, he couldn't or wouldn't still be able to bring something to the table. He obviously wouldn't be a long term option, but as a stop-gap he might just provide us with that little bit of spark and brilliance that all too often is lacking from our week to week performances.
