The Week In Villa #45 (26/6/09 - 2/7/09)

The Week In Villa #45 (26/6/09 - 2/7/09)

Friday, 26th June

Contrary to recent reports - started by the M****r (sorry, I couldn`t type something so disgusting on the front page) - that Freddie Bouma is retiring, he has come out and said he is progressing well and is hoping to be involved in pre-season. GOOD!

Today we also announced that we are to have a pre-season friendly with Fiorentina a week before the season starts. It was a good day against Inter, hopefully the weather, result and performance will all be in a similar mould!

The England U-21`s get through to the final of the Euro`s but my McGrath, did they make hard work of it! 3-0 up at half-time, drew 3-3 and won on penalties - the first of which was missed by James Milner, Beckham-against-Turkey style! Overall though Jimmy was good again, and his corners lead to two of the three goals.

Saturday, 27th June

No new transfer talk to discuss today - although the Sol Campbell link seems quite hot today, much like the weather! - but Randy Lerner is quoted as saying 'the funds are in place` for our transfer spending. I for one never doubted that but I have read some Villa fans describe Lerner as 'the new Doug Ellis`. Unbelievable!

Sunday, 28th June

Nice link this morning - Robbie Keane. Not too shabby at all, that! Would be very surprised if it happened, but I`d be even more delighted! We`re also linked with Tim Borowski at Bayern Munich. Based on the few times I`ve seen him, I think I`d much rather see him join than Jenas/Huddlestone.

David O`Leary gives an interview too, where he makes some valid points (mostly where he gives some insight into what it was like working for Doug) and also talks a LOT of absolute nonsense. That`s about as much time as I`m willing to waste on that man.

Monday, 29th June

James Milner is by far England`s best player as the U-21`s take a 4-0 battering in the final against Germany. Craig Gardner also makes an appearance but it was already 3-0 at that point. Why Gardner (and Everton`s Rodwell) were not starters is beyond me.

Our last pre-season game is announced, a friendly away to Oxford. It`s listed as 'an Aston Villa XI`, so I suppose that`s mostly a reserve team then.

We`re linked with Miguel Veloso. Not that this matters, but he has been a good signing for Villa before… before when I have brought him on Football Manager!

Late this evening, Sky Sports News published a story saying that we are leading the way for Boro`s Tuncay. Good player, would offer us something a little different.

Tuesday, 30th June

Okay, apparently Tuncay is off to his homeland.

That said, another player who would offer us something a little different to what we already have is Eider Gudjohnson. Why mention that? Well today, his Dad - who is also his agent - lists us, Fulham and Everton as three of the teams in for him. In-ter-es-ting!

Wednesday, 1st July

Philippe Senderos seems to be the main talk today. Distin is mentioned too. Not much else going on though, or nothing new anyway. SNOOZE!

Those people looking for a multiple announcement today - heck, even those looking for one signing - will go to bed seriously disappointed.

Thursday, 2nd July

This morning, we are linked with Titus Bramble.

Thankfully, this afternoon, this has been dismissed!

Stewart Downing is also linked. That would be an indication of 4-5-1 for me, if we were to sign him. Or Bentley, for that matter. Mind you, if we sign Owen too... Ah hell, we need a bigger squad and a proper plan B, let's go for it!

In other news, Nicky Shorey has backed Steve Sidwell to show his best form next season. I am inclined to agree that I believe we have more to come from Sidwell.

Right. That`s your lot. Signing next week, yes?!

How very dare you dis-respect David O'Dreary after the respect he showed to both the Club and its supporters.
