Randy Lerner 'The Funds Are In Place'

Villa owner Randy Lerner is quoted in The Daily Express in a report by John Wragg saying that the funds are in place for Martin O'Neill to bring in new players.

Some fans are starting to get twitchy and the report points to the Blues who have signed five players to our none, add to the fact we are now three players down following the sale of Gareth Barry the departure of Stuart Taylor also to Manchester City on a free, the retirement of Martin Laursen not to mention the still trying to recover left-back Wilfred Bouma looking unlikely to be fit for the start of the new season and the fact that Marlon Harewood is so far down the pecking order even Doris the tea lady is ahead of him, so he'll also be leaving you would assume, you can certainly see there is much work to be done on what was already a very small squad which lets face it proved not the right size to compete on all fronts last season, something the manager admitted... no mention of Moscow needed I guess.

However Randy is upbeat and thinks that the reputation of our manager is what will draw players in:

'Martin’s achievements have been superb. We have improved steadily and we have qualified for Europe two seasons in a row. He has bought into our club, he has emotionally invested. That’s how he’s wired.'

Adding, 'He has a reputation as a very good manager, with good success, and that will play a part when new players are thinking of coming to Aston Villa. The funds will be in place for him'.

Over to you Martin!

Well I don't doubt that Mr Lerner is backing him. But we need to get busy! We need some quality signings, or it is obvious to all just to stay still, but we want to continue to progress and or consolidate!

We need to have made some signings by mid July, or we are losing the battle!

Nice to see Lerner speaking out and giving MON a tiny tiny push, I want to see either Defour/Jurado, Owen, Gudjohnsen, Campbell, Bentley all of that your looking at about 20m we have sold Barry for 12m and i can see Sidwell going for 5m in search for first team football, Harewood for 2-3m thats 20m going out, I believe if we need that we would atleast stay still next season and stop the advances of Spurs and Man City/Everton/Fulham, We could also do with a new international keeper who doesnt let in 48 goals a season !!

Owen, Gudjohnsen and Campbell? Not sure thats standing still, more like backwards. Don't think we need another striker let alone 2. I'd prefer to see us invest heavily in a top class midfielder and a top class defender, plus a couple of glamour signings to bring the 'feel good factor' back that we had last season!

Gudjohnsen is a great attacking midfielder rather than a striker, i hope we get him!! As to the jibe at Brad, i think you may want to take a look at the defending in front of him. If not for him we could have suffered even more embarassment over the last few months of the season.

The comparison with Blues is stupid. They are signing third-tier players. Once Real Madrid (who are driving the market) have finished then the market will start to rumble. June 30th is the expiration date / clause activation date for most contracts, so don't expect anything until mid-July.

yes, agree gm, I thought the blues comparison was stretching it a bit, I've not seen anyone moaning about us not getting any of the players they've signed.

Its really funny reading transfer rumours and it is crazy how we all make it seem simple. eg. owen, sol campbell, delph, gudjohnson etc could be tied up so easily, although im sure its harder than we imagine. the only thing that annoys me is that teams like blackburn are linked with bvan nistelroy, hull with owen etc. lets get some big names linked with us!! SIGN THEM UP!

Joe Hart would have been a great signing, but 1, we've already got 2 keepers and 2, I don't think Citeh will let him go on a permanent deal. Hughes and his goalkeeper coach rate him. He was excellent for England the other night.

Good, good, good, because I must admit that I was starting to wonder whether yet again we were going to fail to push on after gaining a foothold, something we were guilty of doing all too often throughout the previous owner's era. Money has to be spent to give ourselves an opportunity next season, otherwise we could quite easily find ourselves struggling down in the mid-table region. We've missed out so far on one or two players I might have liked to see at Villa Park, but hopefully O'Neill has his targets identified, and will make a determined effort to secure their services as soon as possible.
