Villa owner Randy Lerner is quoted in The Daily Express in a report by John Wragg saying that the funds are in place for Martin O'Neill to bring in new players.
Some fans are starting to get twitchy and the report points to the Blues who have signed five players to our none, add to the fact we are now three players down following the sale of Gareth Barry the departure of Stuart Taylor also to Manchester City on a free, the retirement of Martin Laursen not to mention the still trying to recover left-back Wilfred Bouma looking unlikely to be fit for the start of the new season and the fact that Marlon Harewood is so far down the pecking order even Doris the tea lady is ahead of him, so he'll also be leaving you would assume, you can certainly see there is much work to be done on what was already a very small squad which lets face it proved not the right size to compete on all fronts last season, something the manager admitted... no mention of Moscow needed I guess.
However Randy is upbeat and thinks that the reputation of our manager is what will draw players in:
'Martin’s achievements have been superb. We have improved steadily and we have qualified for Europe two seasons in a row. He has bought into our club, he has emotionally invested. That’s how he’s wired.'
Adding, 'He has a reputation as a very good manager, with good success, and that will play a part when new players are thinking of coming to Aston Villa. The funds will be in place for him'.
Over to you Martin!
