Wilfred Bouma Doing Fine & NOT Retiring

Well this was nice and quick. The Mirror had an article today saying that Villa left-back Wilfred Bouma was considering his future, this on the back of other rumours doing the rounds amongst Villa fans etc: Mystery Surrounds Wilfred Bouma's Prospects

Calls for clarification were made and who better than Wilf himself to say he is doing fine and he's on his way back!

Talk about from the horses mouth... not that I think Wilf is a horse you understand... neigh!

The popular Dutch man, out since last July after his horror injury v Odense, told the official site:

'I have been doing rehab work for two weeks now and things are going really great. To read newspaper stories with that sort of speculation is really frustrating for me because it's progressing well. I have had a lot of calls, even from my friends in Holland, asking me about the stories. When people read things like this, some believe them. But things are going really well.'

He is building slowly again and is looking to start jogging during pre-season but adds he isn't going to rush as he wants to be right.

'There is no real hurry. I don't want to rush back. It's got to be right. There's no set date for my comeback but it's looking good and I'm in good spirits.'

Good to see the official site reacting to the news and rumours quickly.

Get him back to fitness MON and then sell the last of your predecessor’s players. I think Bouma is the last one to go and then we’ll have a MON team full of honest lads.

Good news indeed, although I still think that there's a long road ahead for Freddie before we see him back in contention for a first team starting spot. Dont rush back, I guess that's the key thing, although Freddie and the medical staff will know that a lot better than I. Left full back has definitely been our problem position of late, although given the opportunity, I expect to see a much improved Nicky Shorey this season. He certainly has the ability to make the left back spot his own.
