Martin O'Neill Says Villa Actively Looking

Martin O'Neill back and hopefully refreshed from a holiday in the States, has told the official site that Villa are 'actively pursuing' new signings.

The Villa boss promised:

'We're on the lookout. We want to strengthen the side. We have lost Gareth but we are hoping to be in a position to replace him. Having looked at the market and watched what has developed with the major transfers - Kaka and Ronaldo particularly - you can definitely say it's interesting times.'

Not that interesting yet, be better when we sign someone!!!! :o))

He also again mentions the likes of Manchester City and Tottenham as a threat next season and expects Everton to also be up there again, so warns even to stand still he has to improve the team.

Reading what MON has said it is just vague promises to the future. When you read phrases like "actively pursuing" and "on the lookout" it makes one wonder what they have been doing in the run up to the transfer window, day dreaming, chewing the cud or what. By now they should know precisely who they want and be out to get them come what may. Swapping one for one, having lost our best player, is hardly improving the squad. Sadly, I suspect the dark forebodings written above may again come to pass. Come on Villa, don't just window shop, go out and buy some decent additions. At best, one in one out, plus at least another five top class, proven performers. And that is just to stand still.

I don't think we need that many...4/5 good signings would do it for me, even with Harewood out the door along with Barry/Laursen. 1) A left back (particularly depending on Bouma) 2) A centre back to replace ML 3) A centre mid to replace GB - ideally an attacking/creative one 4) A winger to give us a 3rd option +1 more of your choice! In Sidwell, Gardner, Knight, Guzan, Reo-Coker (if he stays), Heskey we have capable back up players, and we have some good kids too. If we brought in too many players it would probably leave some unhappy players who aren't playing. 4/5 in would probably be just about right in my opinion.

Roll on 24 hours before the transfer window shuts, so we can make our first signing! :p

Christ Almighty - no matter what MON does or says you all know better and have to have a go. All those figures bandied about about the cost of players - are they what the selling club have accepted or what YOU think they will cost? It's funny how you can bandy about figures 2Mill 10 mill done deal. You know what I am not in the camp that MON can do no wrong but looking at what you "experts" keep coming out with it makes me wonder do we deserve a manager and chairman of the ilk we have?. Apart from the big deals - have Evefrton bought anyone? Have Spurs?. Naughton will cost much more than 5 mill. Utd turned down a 5 mill bid from Everton. A mate is a Utd fan and knows that a bid of 7 mill upwards is what Utd will ever consider. Have a go at MON if we don't get anyone - but do any of you think we will not buy any one?

O'Neill doesn't do signings but if he did they would probably be the worst signings in the world.

I know Obediah - give MON a chance - transfers in earnest will start when managers and players are back off hols/tournaments. We do need a few. I'm just having a Sarcastic go back at the sarcastic comments aimed at MON (an again I'm not in the MON can do no wrong corner).

Over the past few threads i have been reading alot of stuff that has made me ashamed to be called a villa fan. Only a couple clubs have made signings sofar and we arent one of them so people are critisising MON. Next u will be calling for his resignation, i dont really understand it. I cant think of anybody we have really missed out on that would improve our squad anyway (i dont rate defoe). We are starting to sound like high and mighty fans, the type i dont like

No matter who we have as our boss, the fans (and what seems like a majority) will always get a bit bored of them after a while and start talking about how they do a better job, whilst spending time constantly bringing up their weaknesses. I'd walk if I was MON. I'd hate to be the manager of a club with fans like we have. And if I hear one more person talk about Moscow I think I'll scream really really loudly!!!!!! So their!

Its funny that he has time to deny links, be better if he used his energy to bring in some players instead. There are plenty of players available out there and I would like to have thought that the club already have targets lined up, comments like "on the lookout" are a little concerning to be honest.

PBAVFC, welcome to football mate, fans everywhere regardless of who they support will always speculate as to who they can and cannot sign whether or not that is even the case, but to think this is only relevant to Villa fans could perhaps be seen as somewhat naive.

Tell you what - don't deny the links then give more ammo to the MON bashers so they can say why not deny the links!!! MON's sitting in his office drinking guiness and eating irish stew -that's what he does all day. I know let's offer 10 million for Defour - done deal - you know the magical figure always quoted by fans. Forget that we MAY have made an approach but knocked back becuase the money offered was not enough who knows - why should we let all and sundry know our business. why should he tell us who he is going for? Offer what it takes I hear - you'd never make a good businessman then.

But he made the same comments last year and we ended spending over 50 odd million, being one of the most active clubs in europe, which resulted in us having a crack at fourth instead of mid table boredom. Obviously counts for nothing. Maybe its about time to take his soundbytes with a pinch of salt and be aware that our competitors in the market will also be reading his quotes.

young_jonah, Its not specualting for tranfers that winds me up, I enjoy that. Its the constant dig at the manager for anything and everything he does and says. The man can't win. And no, I don't think its relevant to Villa fans only, but being a Villa, I'm only concerned with the way our fans behave.

meant to be a thread for opinions naz, just because their opinion doesn't match yours doesn't mean it isn't a valid argument or point of view. I think on past experience people are possibly tired of the comments from him and just want to see clear action. I do however agree it is very early in this transfer window to panic, not much gets done until July, just hope it doesn't then drag on into the season because we then do have the excuse that the new player hasn't had pre-season etc.

I know JF - but as PBAVFC says the constant digs for no reason (and in this case there is no resaon) make my blood boil - all me and you (and the others) did in someway helping us get a Chairman and manager we needed. Opinions ok but constant digs - no thanks.

Digs for no reason? We have made only 4 good signings in 5 transfer windows (not counting the first one, he had little time), how can people NOT understand frustration from fans? It baffles me.

And on the denying links argument, no he shouldn't deny anything. End of. Another way of looking at it then is, why does he deny 1 rumour in 100? If you are going to deny links at least be consistant and deny them all, OR just don't say anything, keep your transfers to yourself (as he does) and ignore papertalk, it really is simple.

Other teams might not have signed any players but others teams haven't lost their two best players and already have the smallest squad in the league . We have about 14 usable players FFS . The rest just sit on the bench with no chance of playing! I'm sick of this excuse that we have a small squad
Villan57
IN - Bentley, Owen, Love, Drenthe, Defour, Richards, Naughton. OUT - Shorey, Harewood, Reo-Coker, Salifouuuuuuuuu.

but if they don't like the manager Naz, that is their opinion and as they pay their money, they take their choices and are entitled to them. I don't think the digs are for no reason, some just don't believe in him, that includes Gareth Barry evidently!

I think in the fact that Randy is here and the politics are all but dead at last (hurrah) that us fans are all back to doing what we do best, talking and disagreeing about managers and players, that is football and long may it continue. For me, right owners, not sure we've got the right manager, I want us to have the right one though, just not convinced!

i personally think football has got that screwed up that they confuse the job as manager the same thing as the job of coach, MoN is a coach NOT a manager, his dealings in the market say it all, we should let Mon get on with coaching the players and bring in a manager who will work with him when it comes to buying the players. if we dont buy quality players this time around next season will be a major blow for the club. as stated before "more quality will leave than come"

And breathe........ Has everyone forgotten the dark days under Ellis when we knew there'd be no money and our best players would be off? MON can't win -don't comment the fans demand info, comment and he shouldn't say anything. I'm as frustrated as anyone that we haven't signed anyone yet, and agree that we need about 5 or 6 players (if we keep NRC and Shorey) but getting quality takes time, getting quality and quantity which MON needs is a balancing act unless your man citeh or chelski. If MON spends too much in one place we don't get the squad depth, too thin and we don't get quality.

JF not sating they cannot comment or criticise. What irks me and others is as AVbornandbred says in his post. What's passed has passed. Because MON did what he did in the last windows - who's to know what will happen in this one. We got rid of Ellis. And to the comment we lost our best player?. Yes no one has lost one of the better (won't say best) players. But he was going to go be it now or later - no one can say otherwise (or see into the future). Laursen was injury - cannot legislate for that. I'm not 100% convinced by MON but I cannot think of another manager out there who could replace him - don't say there are plenty - there aren't. I don't want to see the return of a new gaffer every 3/4 years. Once the transfer window really opens - then let's see and then I will be the first to "have a go" at MON if we fail to recruit anyone - and I don't mean the players bandied about by us - if the player is good enough for MON/Randy he's good enough for me (maybe not you but for me). The above is my opinion ;o)

can't believe people are having a go at MON, look at our progression over the years. every1 has an opinion on his signings/decisions but he has the job for a reason. if it was that easy every1 would do it. The trouble is AVbornandbred is that too many of us can still remember the horrible Ellis years and we don't want anything like it again. When Randy and MON arrived we all hoped (and expected) that things would be significantly different and that we would quickly be in a position to challenge the top four. Instead we have crept forward, always with a built in excuse of a small squad, so now we seriously wonder about intent. Either they are going to make a serious challenge this season, which means bringing in 6-7 class players, which includes the replacements for Barry and Laursen, or we are going to go backwards very quickly. That is the bottom line, plus MON does not have to be around to bring in the new players once he has identified them, and no one begrudges him a holiday.

nazvfc - do you honestly believe you had any input whatsoever in Doug Ellis' decision to sell Villa and move on..... if you do you really do like the smell of your own ****............ Doug Ellis would have done exactly what he wanted to do, for the deal he wanted to the people he wanted...... he WOULD NOT have taken any notice of what you, or any other fan thought regardless, and I dont blame him for the things he did for the club.... !

I see no need for the Ellis argument to be played out once again, it is old news. Whether fans pressure had any relevance is no longer an issue, he's gone, lets move on.

I'm an optimist and having a great transfer window looking forward to what occurs. With 12 PL clubs yet to sign anyone, and the only major signing in the PL being Barry, there just ain't no reason to gripe yet.

obediah, I agree that expectations rocketed after Randy took over and I share your desire not to return to the type of days Ellis subjected us to and that is exactly why I get frustrated with the short term views expressed by many on here- no major super star signing, no title then sack the manager. Lets face it since Ellis MON has rebuilt the foundations of a good squad (compare it to the odreary squad), we have a fantastic training and youth set up and the fans and ex players are now important parts of the club (although the tribute to Birchy was woeful). In all walks of life strong foundations give exponential growth, over rapid success without foundations wilts and dies. We are building but lets be realistic Randy is no Abramovic or Sheikh abu dabi dabi whatever, so we have limited funds to play with.

obediah, I agree that expectations rocketed after Randy took over and I share your desire not to return to the type of days Ellis subjected us to and that is exactly why I get frustrated with the short term views expressed by many on here- no major super star signing, no title then sack the manager.

AVbornandbred, good post. Totally agree O'Neill has done a fantastic job in laying fantastic foundations on which we can grow. I just doubt O'Neill is the man to continue our growth. I would be shocked if we finish any higher than 6th, ever under his leadership. We may not be such a strong position as we are now in 12 months time, should he walk. But lets see what he can do, plenty of time left to make signings, he may well pull something out of the bag.

YJ - share your concerns aboout MON's ability to reach the highest level ( I personally think he did nothing special at leicester and celtic is always a coin flip with rangers). I was hugely sceptical when he joined us and have been appalled by some of his selections, tactics and decisions. BUT he is learning and developing at the same time as we are as a club. This is his first big club (Celtic don't count cos they only have Rangers to beat) and we have forgotten how to be a big club so maybe we can grow together. I'm sure if Randy doubts MON's ability in the transfer market we'll soon have a director of football to help, but I just wish some of our fans would appreciate how far we've come and the scale of the task and give the bloke a chance, he's done a great job so far on balance.
