The Aston Villa Summer Transfer Thread Pt 2

Part two of the summer long torture thread. Sorry, did I say torture, I meant TRANSFER thread. Last summer we filled about 10 or 11 of these up with article comments so lets see if we can't out do ourselves and maybe this time we'll all end up happy and positive with the incoming and outgoing players!?

So basically use this thread as you wish, who have you seen linked, who would you like in, which linked players would be good, bad or just plain ugly?

Prem league rules, page 150 on transfers: 2. The first Transfer Window in any year shall commence at midnight on the last day of the Season and shall end on 31st August next if aWorking Day or, if not, on the firstWorking Day thereafter, at a time to be determined by the Board.

I have also, just to be doubly sure that no rule changes have come into place, double checked with the Club and been told the rules are correct and the transfer window is alive and kicking.

Dont rate Hutton really but i wonder if Luke will be Wilfs replacement at LB???! We're cursed by injuries this year. I rekon Owen on 50k a week would be worth it for free. Like the idea of sturridge too. Richards, Lescott or Hangeland for CB, Defour or Bentley for MF

Martins or Owen? I think Martins would be a decent option, as he is young. Not as clinical as Owen though. Owen is more of a gamble as he is obviously injury prone, but for a freebie, i think he would be worth a punt! Certainly wouldnt mind seeing him in a villa shirt!

For a long time I've been skeptical about any move for Owen, but I'm beginning to warm to the idea. If he stays fit (and if anywhere can keep him fit, Villa can) then he'll score goals. Hopefully we'll have more games to play next season, so we'll be grateful of the depth up front. Most importantly though, he's a big football name. News of the transfer will raise Villa's profile around the world - which has to be a step in the right direction. It would be great for the players at the club and a good sign to those we might want to attract to the club. At the end of the day, even if he's fit for only half the season, he'll be a good player for free even if his wages are steep.

not a lot today, the new Reading boss admits he will struggle to keep hold of Kevin Doyle who we have been linked with along with Spurs. Everton today linked for a £7m swoop for the striker. Alan Hutton was linked last night for £5m. Apart from that can't see anything new today. Doyle a good one you think?

I haven't seen a great deal of Kevin Doyle to be honest, but he wouldn't excite me, and I can't see him putting bums on seats! I guess he'd be a 'typical' MON signing though?

I know its been done for a while now, but i still don't see why you guys sold Barry for 12million? As an outsider, i just thought he was worth a lot more than that. Can anyone shed light on this deal for me? Good luck in the transfer market and for next season

I'd give Doyle a chance but not for "funny money". I'd also go for Roque still. Owen is not my bag and I think we can do better although if he came I'd accept it and hope for the best. Would like to see either Bentley or Downing come in and provide real competition for Sidwell. I think Sidwell will still be a great hit when he has this pre-season and no bad luck injury like last time....also think he will raise his game witouht Gaz there and flourish...watch this space. Hangelaand or Lescott at top choice CB but wingback cover needed as top priority people....that way we can play RB's as RB's and LB's as......also NRC to stay and become a sweeper/holding MF. So: RSC = 13m, Bentley = 10m, x1 RB + LB = 16m, (maybe to include Bale or super signing of G Johnson), and surprise signing of M Johnson from Man City.

We don't need any/many more midfielders. Gardner played for U21s last night for the first half and was quality in tackle and distribution, even scoring a well taken goal from an excellent run from deep to beat the offside trap.

I still think a raid on Bolton and Blackburn would suit us: Roque from BB and Matty Taylor from BW. Also, Glen Johnson or Micah Richards or both would really beef the defence up and provide quality numbers in that dept. Both young too. Richards really needs to sort his head out and being with us would do that. Bring Sturridge with him and he has a mate to help bed him in too. I still believe that Cuellar and Davies will be brilliant if allowed to play together in their central defence positions and not shuffled like playing cards. All of these players are "getable" with perhaps Johnson staying for money at Portsmouth now another Sheik is onboard. Outside bets are on Bentley, Owen, Bent and Downing. All good players but a bit soft mentally and physically in one way or another but with undisputed talent that when firing is up at the top level. Standing by for retort. ;-) p.s. no to Barton!!! He's fat, he's scouse and I don't want him in my Villa house!

Just heard form a usually reliable source that Hutton has agreed on principle to a £5.2m move!! Medical later this week!! He is meant to be a terrific player - certainly wanted by Man Utd last year. Dont know if we need him though, hope L Young is not going to go LB!!

We need a right-back of course but not at £5.2m. Bring one through (Eric Lichaj), buy one on the cheap (like we did with Delaney) or get a Laursen replacement who is just as good at RB (like Wes Brown....but not Wes Brown!!)

i disagree. rightback is certainly not a priority, w've got young, and gardner can quite easily cover, we need a top quality cb , top quality cm and striker, a good winger, and another good random player lol.

bit unsure as to why people keep saying hutton and right back not a priority?strength in depth perhaps? we've got a good foundation, if we're spending good money we might as well get people in who can push the first team instead of just being 'back-up' im pretty sure man utd's 'backups' werent cheap even the reserves like evans would command a good price! get them in I say (hutton and owen) and carry on building Mr Oneil! utv

Even if we kept him fit for the last 3rd of the season we would look better with him in the squad than on the opposite bench..still prefer huntlaar though :-)

apparently Owen only played 71 games but still scored 29 goals thats not too bad a ratio really if villa could keep him fit.....hardly past it!

Sorry TheFullTilt, I cant agree about us signing Michael Owen. This isn't the Michael Owen of our distant memories, this is an injury prone individual way past his best. His pace has gone, disappeared into the breeze with his first touch. Many also question whether his heart is still in the game. Is he really worth the gamble, at the ridiculous salary he would command? I think not. A Heskey/Owen partnership next season would frighten me to death. We need a strike duo that can do that to opposition defences.

maybe your right glensider, I may have my rose tinted glasses on again-bring back angel!I do think Owen would be a good addition on a free though-considering we were ready to splash out 4million on harewood plus wages and then we seem ready to sell him on again for whats reported as 1.5mil, which is probably how much we should of payed at the time. Just remember guys - most fans were GUTTED last season when we were basically outbid for Bentley (if I remember we went to £15m final offer for him - then spent £12m on Milner). At the time we all thought we were getting second best!! Dont get me wrong Milner will obviously go in at centre-midfield so they will BOTH play. But last season we were gutted we never got him. Especially when Milner struggled at the start and NRC kept him out of the team!!!!! £7m is a bargain - if it goes bad we will not make too much of a loss - surely Blackburn would have him back if it all goes t i t s up!!

Just remember guys - most fans were GUTTED last season when we were basically outbid for Bentley (if I remember we went to £15m final offer for him - then spent £12m on Milner). At the time we all thought we were getting second best!! Dont get me wrong Milner will obviously go in at centre-midfield so they will BOTH play. But last season we were gutted we never got him. Especially when Milner struggled at the start and NRC kept him out of the team!!!!! £7m is a bargain - if it goes bad we will not make too much of a loss - surely Blackburn would have him back if it all goes t i t s up!!

Look at these stats - for the 8 years he was at Bayern Munich he got 31 goals in 188 games (all competitions incl internationals) thats not even 1 in every 6 games!!! He never got more than 5 in a season at Munich. OK he got 19 in one season for Blackburn but how many last year?? 4!!! He is useless!! In fact just to compare Agbonlahor has 33 goals in 117 games for Villa meaning a goal every 3.5games roughly. Heskeys career total is 110 in 471 games a goal in just over every 4 games. John Carew has 72 in 224 - just about a goal in every 3 games. EVEN Marlon Harewood has 22 in 98 games which is a goal every 4.5 games. In my opinion Veloso or Defour would replace Barry but I dont think O'Neill has the bottle to take a 'risk' on a player outside the Permiership - Huddlestone seems more likely but we know that even at his best he will not make us top4. Surely Veloso or Defour could turn into a Fellani or someone like that. I want us to start taking educated risks. Cristiano Ronaldo left Sporting for the Premiership for a similar amount............

I think Sol would be a good buy - whilst we searched for a long-term replacement for Laursen ... even just on a one year contract. I'm all for quick fixes if they are cheap and not to much of a risk ... in Sol, Bentley, Owen, Doyle and Richards, we would get 5 players all available cheaper than this time last year for perhaps 20M in transfer prices combined and these additions would bring undoubted steel to our team and a show of intention that would help keep Ashley hopefully

Sol, Richards and Upson. Two Midfielders - i'd love Bentley and Beckham, but would settle for Bentley and Jenas. Two Strikers Owen and either Doyle or Bent... was just watching the usa game and Oguchi Onyewu caught my eye winning everything in the air and sweeping everything up very nicely could be a good signing if he is that standard consistently

How about Andriy Shevchenko on a years loan from Chelsea. He may not have shone there but he is pure quality and just the 'fox in the box' sort of player we need plus he is in the last year of his contract

Good shout for Shevchenko - I know he may flop but surely we would not have to fork out too much on wages or a fee as they would be subsidised by Chelsea. Another one of those, could do a job, on the cheap in an area that is not high priority. I would rather spend budget on Barry and Laursen replacements. A cheap striker for a season to tide us over until Delfouneso is 100% ready could be ideal. A wealth of experience as well which we lose with Laursen and Barry......cue a lot of Shevchenko hating now!!! All I am saying is he is an option - im my opinion better than Doyle etc.

Everton have bid for Defour? I really hope we are linked to the player as he will be awesome for us and will just get better and better. Everton are showing that they want young talented players, surely we need to flex some muscle and get this player from them?

Im not convinced about bidding for Defour at least not the 12m+ being reported. I have spoken to a few people who follow Belgian football and they reckon that although he is young with potential he only shows brief flashes of his talent and most of the time is average and over rated. I think Delf can become a good striker but wont be ready next year and could do with being loaned out to someone like Wolves with an option to recall him if required.

Defour is a classy player, but i have a feeling he'd be similar to Modric...may take time to settle, but his class will shine through. Which brings to mind, if there's a firesale at Spurs, we should sign their best midfielder. Modric.

Yeah, squad rotation would be a nice problem to have, but MON doesn't want to do it. We had 5 central midfielders last year capable of a good job, and it was begging to be rotated, but Stan and Barry must have played every minute from December to May. He needs to learn quickly.

I presum ewe have identified key targets and hope they will be in before pre season starts otherwise they wont have time to settle in properly. I think Naughton will be a great signing if we get him he will be worth as much as Glen Johnson in 2 or 3 yrs time.

Agreed Bazzah...it seems as though MON wants to confront our problem position of left back by buying another right back and putting our right back to left back. Ingenius. And i'm pretty sure Heinz has 57 varieties.

MON is busy buying a new kitchen to resolve the issue of Left Back. Apparently, the grill unit will move to allow the kitchen to play at left back. We can then sell Luke Young. Might as well sell the other Young too while we're there. Good work.

im getting very anxious now other clubs are all starting to buy and we have no word yet on anything am i am slightly worried that we will not end up with our number 1 targets or even are number 2 targets and get what every1 else seems not to want hope that is not the case but i wouldnt mind seeing some intention from us

Apparently Spanish press have us with pipping Spurs to Miguel for £5m!!!! Happy Days!! Also one or two reports saying NRC on way to Sunderland for £6m. ONLY if we get Defour in and keep Petrov, Sidwell and Gardner would it be good. Still rather keep him though!!
