Barry Signs For Manchester City

Gareth Barry has put pen to paper on a deal taking him to Manchester City according to their official site tonight.

They are reporting that a deal has been done for £12 million for our former captain and England midfielder.

There is obviously no gossip about his wage, however they do state that Barry is on a 5 year contract and that Mark Hughes is very happy to have him teaming up with their Player of the Year Steve Ireland, who himself has signed a new 5 year deal.

More as we get it.

Yea doubled his money on 100k a week is the rumour. Not too bothered always thought he would move, better to city as we prob recieved more than we would have from liverpool. At least its early in the window so MON has no excuse now! 2 vital players to replace (laursen also) time to get on it.

Good deal for u's!! Think u will struggle without him!!!

Worrying potential trend. If someone will turn his back on a club he's played for 12 years for money... I'm just hoping Arteta and Lescott aren't such *****s, and actually have ambition about something other than their bank balance.

Didnt take him long to think about it! Such a shame you've lost so much credibility Mr Barry. Such a shame you'll be playing under the incompetant Mark Hughes. Such as shame you'll be be taunted by ALL fans as a money grabbing so and so when ever you play away from Eastlands. Such a shame because you gave us 100% most of the time, became an England regular and had a real chance of challenging 4th place next term. Cue the "ambitous project at Citeh" and "I've really enjoyed my time at Villa" quotes from Mr Barry. Such as shame that a liar has no credibility.....
bazzah
glad he is gone early. good luck to him hope it works out well although i cant see man city stopping with barry. who is to say they wont buy Xavi and pirlo tommorow then what?? guess he would be on the bench. Anyway great servant for us over the years handled himself well last year once the season started and i know i might get some stick for this but he will always be one of my favourite villians

Went for 12 million....Makes Lerner and O'Neil look like a joke for saying they wouldn't sell him for that. Makes Barry look like a joke for saying he wants Champions league when even if City qualify for it Barry has two more years before he gets that...he'll be!! Our midfield now looks as weak as our defence and our attacking presence looks weak at the moment. Lets hear another moan from MON that our squad is sooo small. How about building the squad before selling our biggest players. All the talk of Defour when this guy is not proven in any English league....Starting to look like a joke again...

totally agree evertonmike. It's not nice to see players leaving for money, particually when they are as talismatic as barry has been for villa. still, at least you have all summer to find a replacement.

Have to say I am gutted to see such a quality player, who has served the club so well, leave for pastures new. Losing him for Champions League Football would have softened the blow, but to Man Citeh is a disappointment. Unfortunately they are likely to spend another £250m on top of the £130m they spent last season, and that money is almost certain to make them serious players for the next few seasons. From Gareths point of view he owes us nothing. He has given us the best years of his career, has been a great servant (other than his out of character outburst at the end of the previous season) and he has generated significant money for the club. Compare this to Mellberg who cost £5m, gave us 6 years service, then worked it so that he could leave on a free transfer, meaning the club couldn't even use a transfer feeto replace him(and he left a hero?????). Having watched the Villa since the age of 6, Gareth has been a Villa man for over a quarter of my life, so it is like losing a member of the family. No doubt there are thousands of younger Villa supporters who have only ever know the club with Gareth as an integral part of it. But we will move on. Manure never worried about losing Keane, Cantona, Robson, Van Nistleroy, Beckham etc. Chelski improved after losing Zola, Gullitt and others. Lets hope M'ON and Randy have a fruitful summer. Thanks for the memories Gareth. Good luck for the future. Just can't help wishing you had stayed a 1 club man. Up The Villa.

Forget him chaps. We've won bugger all with him so i see it as a blessing to get a younger, faster, more creative centre mid in who can score goals. 12m will go straight on Defour i rekon (Uless MON has something else up his sleeve). Barry couldnt give a toss about Villa or us fans anymore so please lets wish him all the best and start getting excited about who we're gonna replace him with. HE IS REPLACEABLE, PLEASE DONT THINK OTHERWISE. Mon knows what he's doing thats why he hasnt played hardball like he did with Liverpoo. 1 day into the window an he's gone. MON, i salute you. UP THE FREAKIN VILLA!!!

Defour played us off the park, twice, back at the start of the season in the UEFA Cup bentonm. He's a cracking little player, shows up everywhere through the middle. For around £10 million or less he'd be a great signing.

Good luck to Gareth..even tho Man City is a surprise move. Hughes somehow convinced him that they were going to qualify for the CL and probably also made him privvy to who he was going to bring in....and a 5 year deal is an aggressive one at that too. From me..good luck Gareth...thank you for the years.... Villa move on....Mon and Randy have their work cut out..

Why are people criticising Mon and Randy for selling up? They wouldnt have done it for no reason? They obviously need the cash for something. I cant see them being bullied into it after last summer. MONs got a replacement lined up already. We're bigger than Gareth Barry. Yes he's a good player and an england international but the commitment had gone and MON and Randy know that better than any of us.

I was gutted after LAursen announced his retirement, and gutted once more about this news. We have some serious rebuilding to do, I don't want us to fall apart again now. Thanks for the service Gareth, but I think you've made a poor decision.

I think we need to calm down it is very early (good thing) and we can get someone in to replace not with the history though. I think we can get a lot for 12 mil unless people are forgetting what is going on in the economy not many teams will be spending huge sums of money. Good deal for Villa, good deal for Barry not so good for City IMO

Hold on...did he win player of the season? No. Does he tend to loose possession? Yes. Does he score enough goals. No. Does he love Aston Villa like me or you? No. Is £12 million a great fee for someone with 1 year left on their contract? Yes. Goodbye Barry. Hope the Mancs finish mid table again.

The club are extremly quiet at the moment. And to be honest can anyone see Gareth Barry in the Next Sony Tv advert, I think not. Maybe Mancitys heights have been lowered a tad, after all, we had the best years Gareth had to offer!!!!! Wonder what they will do with De Jong? Maybe worth a punt!!!!!

Dunno if I am gutted? But I am just worried what the other players will do, or say after this? Are we going to match the ambitions of Young, Milner, Carew? What if someone comes in for them? Are we going to bend over and take it? Just wait for the summer to pan out and see where we are come Aug? But I really hope we show our bollox this summer and show Barry that we do mean business next season, as we will have a lot of eyes on us next year, to see how we cope without both our Captains!!!! As we didnt look to sharp when we lost GOD!!!

Gutted, but like all modern day footballers money rules in football. Trust Randy and MON now, i'm sure they will replave him and Laursen with real quality players that will take us into 4th spot. Some Like defour would be a really good addition, bentley as back up. Lescott to replace laursen. Owen and the boy sturridge could be usefull. Also some argy centre back that we are supposed to be signing on a free.

well at least we all now know what he meant a few weeks ago when he said he wasnt gona let last year repeat itself i reckon he had no intentions of staying realy but like everyone is saying glad its done early and we can get on with it my personal view is that this is for the best middle of the park is now a place up for grabs and im sure that will only inspire the midfielders we have already got into action and with defour in there we will be stronger next year without the grey cloud thats bin there all season with this barry saga come on martin time to get busy

I know we need new blood. However, a big worry for me in terms of who we sign is also how to keep our own youngsters happy. MON needs a serious change in attitude in my view and must at least give the very best of them more of a chance to show what they can do than he has so far. They could save us millions. They could be brill. MON knows better than me, but unless they are given chances to come off the bench with time to change things and have an impact, then he as well as me will never know what he is missing. The Fonz, Albrighton, Bannan and Baker are all guys who should already have had more minutes on the pitch - particularly in the end of the season we have had. Is there a worse club to be at in terms of 1st team opportunities off the bench. The stats say a resounding NO. And this is for the likes of Gardner too. MON's record he might defend by saying but he selected Gabby and bought Ashley and Milner and they are all young players. But how about just playing guys in form and giving youngsters who have done no wrong more of a chance. Gabby is the opposite, a player who stands out as an exception to the rule and who for some unknown reason has been an MON favourite who has been given endless opportunities. I am not knocking Gabby, who I hope will come back to form and up his game again. Please don't get Owen, who could not give a damn about Villa, just himself and even if fit he has left the best of his attitude as well as pace behind him. Our youngsters are our big hope. reserve League champions, and deserve a chance, rather than long term no hopers on the way down. If we can buy some quality then fantastic, but lets give our youth a better share of the 90 minutes action when appropriate. Ferguson at manure uses his youngters so much better than we do. As for Barry, I will not cheer him or deride him when he returns to Villa. I wish him well with England, and other than that he is off our radar now.

I completley agree stennyvilla especially as Gary Cahill has been called up for international duty when were desperate for new defenders. If MoN decides to go with youth he'll get slaughterd for not showing ambition.when a young player wants to go somewhere else because there are no first team opportunities he'll get slaughtered for selling our good young players.I think we supporters need to try and see the bigger picture,I do hope we replace Barry as best we can,but I dont think we need another striker.

lets be clear Barry is a good player and has moments of real class but he's no where near world class (and at least we won't have to watch anymore of those half arsed excuses for tackles where he turns his back and throws his hands up in the air). Could be a good piece of business but could be a disaster if MON doesn't move to make a signing quickly - strange how the club have been so quiet on the subject since the story broke, still no comment from MON on the official site.

Well I wish Gareth good luck. He has always given his best for us so I have no complaints about him leaving. The big worry for me is that we've lost our two best players (Laursen and Barry) and in my heart of hearts I can't see MON replacing them with players of the same stature. I really hope I'm wrong but I cannot see who he will bring in?? We can talk about Defour and Vagner Love all we like but I'll put my mortgage that neither is on MON's radar. Like I say I hope I'm wrong and we bring in a couple of massive signing before the end of the month. But I think what will happen is that we'll be deafened by the silence coming out of Villa Park and we'll fall behind the other clubs in and around us next season. Spurs and Man City will spend and be stronger and Everton will be up there. As for the top four, we don't have a cats chance in hell of catching them. Come on MON, PROVE ME WRONG!!!!! VITD

Thought Collymore was going to be one, didn't work out. The likes of Ginola were too late, if done years before they'd have wowed me. Maybe you are right, I'll ponder a while eltoro...! Merse became a wow but I can't remember being that excited when it was announced (nor disappointed I must add)
