Former Villa striker (and sometimes defender!!) Dion Dublin has backed Curtis Davies to come good and says the player is too hard on himself.
In an interview in the Birmingham Mail Dion says he was 'harsh' calling himself a pub player adding:
'He is a kid who has come back from injuries and is playing again in a very, good football team who are fifth in the league. Hes not doing that badly! He is a good enough footballer to go out with confidence. He is a good enough defender and he has got to believe in himself.'
Ah, the magic word, CONFIDENCE. He can look like a top player on his day but some matches he certainly looked like he needed our now sadly retired defensive rock Martin Laursen to mop up and when he is lined up with Zat Knight the defence rarely looks secure does it?
Dion says the player needs someone to put their arm around him and remind him he was bought for £8million, not because he was 'rubbish', quite the reverse!
He also admits when he moved back to the central defensive role he made mistakes and says that strikers soon pick up on weaknesses.
'I have a little bit of sympathy for Curtis on the one hand. On the other, unfortunately you cant be a kid in this league. If you're a kid you just get sniffed out by the teams you are playing against whether it be Manchester United, West Brom or Portsmouth.'
Interesting times at Villa, with our world class defender now gone, the ones we have need to step up to the plate. Have they done enough this season for the club not to be looking to bring in re-enforcements? I very much doubt it.
