Vermaelen Interests O'Neill

Reports today suggest that Martin O'Neill has made a personal trip to watch Ajax's Thomas Vermaelen as he looks to bolster the squad in the summer window.

According to SSN, there have been a number of reports in Holland about the weekend trip to see the Belgium defender, who many consider to be one of the best centre halves in the Dutch league.

With the growing doubt about Martin Laursen's future, our interest in another talented and experienced centre half is obvious.

But as I know very little about Dutch football, well I don't watch any football unless Villa are playing to be honest, I have absolutely no idea who this chap is and whether or not he would be a good addition to the squad.

I didn't notice him in the UEFA cup tie earlier this season - though that of course can be a good thing for a defender. But he certainly isn't the experienced centre backmany say we need, as he's only in his early twenties.

I've been reading a bit about him, and there seem to be pretty positive reviews all around. He's weighed-in with 5 goals this season also, so clearly he knows where the net is (probably more than you can say for Davies or Knight). Ajax have failed to make Champions League this season, so there's a good chance some of their better players would have more incentive to leave.

Yet again Albarnista shows his vast knowledge of Villa, the guy you didn't notice was the one that scored against us!!!

joerothuk - I'll repeat what I've said many times on these sites - Cahill didn't want to stay and fight for his place. He wasn't prepared to bide his time. Nobody "got rid" of him - he was banging on the managers door demanding to play every game or leave. This is fact.

i don't recall that being the case, gmvillan? can you give me a link showing that? anyway, in my book he deserved to be playing each week; i think o'neil just didnt rate him - all villa fans knew he was quality. the reason he wasn't playing every week was because zat knight had just been signed. whatever way you look at it, we swapped the hugely talented cahill, for £1.5 million and zat knight. which is patently ridiculous.

The difference is that Zat is happy to be our 4th defender and sit on the bench but Cahill wasnt thats why he had to go. I dont think he's actually 'that' good. Would he really start for any of the top 6?
