Curtis Davies Worried Great Dane Might Retire

Short and not so sweet this one.

Curtis Davies has added to the whispers that Martin Laursen might be having to consider retiring.

We can - like the team - only hope and pray that it doesn't come to that, just look what a blow it has proved to be this season, with him we were solid him, without him the defence has become a shambles at times.

Davies told the The Mirror :

'If he has to retire, it will be a massive blow for him and the team. He’s been trying his best to get things sorted and hopefully he can come back again next season. He’s the captain and is a big, solid figure for us. He’s a presence in both boxes – scoring goals, clearing balls. He’s an old school centre half and maybe if we had that side to us against West Ham we would have won.'

If he has to retire and as expected Gareth Barry leaves this summer, that will be our 'world class' contingent gone in one swoop, hopefully Martin O'Neill will be able to defy the odds and have a tip top transfer window in preparation for next season... gulp!

they tried to clone him Lee but the other defenders misunderstood and started acting like clowns!

What a loss if Laursen retires, who would we replace him with any ideas. Barry may yet stay which i think is vital every move goes through Barry.

Interesting that you say Barry might stay Astonsteve, as it's something that has suggested itself to me too. However, I think that we are confusing Barry's fantastic professionalism and fundamental decency with a genuine indication he'll stay. Unfortunately, we are never going to be in a position to offer Champion's League football in Barry's footballing lifetime - even if, as I suspect, he's playing at the top level for at least another 7 or 8 years. And Gareth Barry is a player who should be influencing the destination of league titles and Champion's Leagues in a major way. He'd be mad to stay at Villa from a professional perspective, but who knows, maybe he's madly in love with Villa?

As for who O'Neill would replace Laursen with, Micah Richards would seem to be a good bet. And I say 'good' bet strictly in the sense that it seems likely, rather than it actually being a 'good' signing. He's not good enough for Man City at the moment, nevermind where they aspire to be. He wouldn't be fit to clean Laursen's boots.

I think Barry has to way up between playing every game at villa and thus being a regular with England in a world cup year or moving to Liverpool, playing out of position and not playing regular but getting sum Champions League games, a friend of mine knows Barry and said he would stay if Villa offered him the right money dont know how true that is though.

I think if we want to challenge we need to invest heavily in the summer, i would go 4 Richards at right back, top classs centre half cant think of 1, competition 4 Milner and Young i would go 4 Downing and Bently top Centre 4ward Owen, palymaker maybe Dafour. Letting Harewood go and Keeping Barry, then we MAY compete.
astonsteve
Spot on astonsteve but id prefer Bent to Owen

Take a look at Ash Williams of Swansea at Wales. Better than Zat and will be a great prospect. Swansea want £3 million for him I think.
