Wigan's Paul Scharner Linked To Aston Villa

Reports in The Sun today have linked Wigan's Paul Scharner, 28, with a move to Villa Park, only days after former team-mate Emile Heskey completed his move.

The story claims that Sunderland and Newcastle are also monitoring the situation and that Scharner actually has a £6million release clause in his contract which would allow him to talk to any club that meet that value.

The player is even quoted as saying - 'Villa are ambitious, joining them would be an upward step.' Adding, 'I originally decided to stay with Wigan in the New Year. But if an offer comes in, I will consider it."

With Martin Laursen's injury keeping him out for a while, Martin O'Neill has hinted at bringing in a Centre Back during this window, and Scharner could fit the bill, as the Austrian can also play in Midfield too if required.

I think he is a really typical O'Neill signing - A centreback who can also play Right Back - an O'Neill signing if ever there was one....if only he was young and english!!

Must admit this player has escaped me, know nothing about him at all. Must be getting old, the memory isn't what it once was. Makes sense with Laursen out a while I suppose.
