'If It's Football, It's Vital'

We Did Try For Players In January

Strange story, but Setanta are carrying quotes from Radiu Afolabi who says he was inches away from signing for us in the window.

The 28 year old Nigerian international has said that Sochaux blocked the move, despite the fact he only had 5 months left on his contract.

The defender will obviously be out of contract at the end of the season, so maybe it's a 'come and get me' plea?

Speaking originally to Tide Sports, he said:

'Aston Villa came asking about me in January but to my surprise, Sochaux blocked the transaction demanding 1.5million (1.4 million) to release me.

'I was very furious about it. Since just five months were remaining on my contract, I see no reason why the management did not allow me to go.

'Aston Villa offered to have me on loan and they were expected to pay my salary until the end of the season.

"This would have been a logical thing for Sochaux to accept because as is it now, at the end of the season I will leave and Sochaux will have nothing on me.'

I've no idea what kind of player he is or whether he would have improved us but at least it gives us something else to talk about and we gee ourselves up for a win at Man U.

Even Heskey could have scored that one max!!
Villan444
Probably scored that one, more like the truth. Anyway, how would we get a ball like that into the box in the first place? Sorry - just not feeling myself today.

Is he right back who can do a job on the left? or is he Centre back who can fill in at right back whilst the right back plays at left back? Just wondered
fatloser
He might be another left back that simply gets left back in the changing rooms. To allow the right back to fill in at left back.

iomvilla - brilliant, cannot top that

Anyone that thinks MON didn't try and sign players in Jan are crazy. I do feel however MON has lost a bit of faith in some of his squad players hense the reason why he's unwilling to use them. I can see this Summer being a very active summer in the transfer window! There are no distractions, plus Villa have been able to establish a better name for themselves on the European stage. Another top 5/6 finish this season is still an amazing season from where we've come from. UTV
Hitman
Trouble is Hitman - because no news came out of who we were after people were saying MON's doing nowt and blah blah blah - you know all the stuff about he should be out there bidding millions for "world class" players- you know the ones where you offer X Million and X grand a week and the player (and other club) just jump at the chance to come here. It don't work that way. No matter what anyone thinks. He will do so again this summer (look to strengthen) - but I guarantee this - you'll get some know all come on here banding out names and having a "go" cos no-one they like has signed within a minute of the transfer window opening. We will strengthen undoubtedly - but there will stll be those who won't like who we sign without giving them a chance even before the shirt has been put on.

He is a defender? We would probably have had him the reserves till next season anyway or played him on the right wing, and anyway, who is he?

Never, ever confuse EFFORT with RESULTS.

if you guys want to compete in the champions league you have to buy better players. Do you see any of the big 4 going for players like that ? they buy top quality proven players who can perform weak in weak out. the race for the fourth spot was summed up for me when the scum signed Arshavin and you signed heskey
Yid_from_India
Errrr.......Kaboul. Preach to someone else....big big players come when you have performed for years...not just because you want them! They will come though...we are still on the up!
koolbill
Its not the January window and the lack of incoming new faces that has been our undoing, it was the fact that we never ensured last summer that we had a squad capable of meeting demands on all four fronts. We left our signings until late in the day, and there simply weren't enough of them. We left ourselves still way short on both numbers, and more importantly quality.

I have to agree with Hitman. The guy writes sense. It aint gonna happen overnight, never would, never will. But progress is being made all the time, despite many simply taking the impatient stance. Remember the bad times, the years of stagnation and decline. Realise then just how far we've come.
