'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Heskey's Peace Prospects

Emile Heskey has said the team are looking forward to testing themselves against some of the brightest talent in Europe when we feature in the Peace Cup.

As covered earlier on the site, Villa will travel to Spain in July for the pre-season tournament featuring the likes of Real Madrid, Juventus, Lyon, Ajax and FC Porto and Heskey doesn't believe we could have much better preparation for the 2009-10 campaign.

Speaking on the official site, he said:

'Obviously seeing who is involved, it is very exciting coming up against Real Madrid, Seville, Juventus and Lyon - they are all big clubs.

'We'll be pitting our wits against the best in Europe so hopefully we'll do well.

'In pre-season you are building yourself up for the start of the season and getting ready to go, so to put yourself up against those types of teams you can't get any better test.'

Villa's involvement is certainly a sign of our rising stock in and around Europe but who'll be the first to ask how seriously are we taking this tournament?

How seriously will MON be taking this? Will he field the reserves cos he feels it is beneath us to win a European tournament ;0) - sorry had to get that one in.

This shows how football is dying and, with stunts like this, it deserves to. More respect is being afforded to a pre-season contest than the UEFA Cup. Why? Because there is probably more money is this little get together.

I'd rather Villa play in this than in some friendlykickabout with a few lower league opposition. This will be more of a challenge then just strolling around on a pitch in some far off backwater.

It will say a lot if the dates clash with the CL qualifiers.

Is this something you really want? You're going to be in Europe anyway next season.

Jeeeez.....some of you lot will moan about ANYTHING! It's a prestigious tournament FFS - just look at the names that are involved. Isn't Villa being invited to play in this a fantastic sign of how we're progressing? Would you have preferred them to invite Tottenham or Man City instead and rather us play our pre-season against 2nd division Danish opposition again? I truly can't believe people on this site sometimes....

YatesyVillain is right, this shows how far we have come. Bolton and Reading have been involved in this prestigious competition, its about time Villa are considered to have the quality of those two clubs!!! All hail the Messiah, who needs the CL anyway?

Just what your tired and jaded squad need - to travel abroad, play in a worthless, meaningless and pointless competition, risking fatigue, injury etc.. Hasn't MON already blamed tiredness caused by an early start to the season as the reason for your recent slump? Not a wise idea really is it?

So rather than have this as part of the pre-season build up you'd rahter us play some part-timers from Denmark or whereever. Jeez anything to criticise MON eh?. Who enjoyed the pre-seson game against Milan? Better than (no disrespect) playing Walsall. Give it a rest - this is PRE-SEASON NOT during the season and a distraction. Rather than MON it's MOAN MOAN MOAN for some people.

To be fair pre-season is all about fitness, if this helps that and brings in a bit of decent marketing, then there is no harm. It isn't something that is important to win, just something to get training for. Alls good. Just does make me laugh/cry any mention of Europe...! :-o

WTF is the new boy doing giving press comments about whats going on in the summer. MON should keep him in the background until he has earned himself a senior position in the squad to be able to comment on what he thinks....

suppose the players and manager can't win with the press, they don't say anything and the fans feel in the dark and the press can be p*ssed off at not getting something to write about, but when they say things they always seem to upset someone! I do wish some of the players would do more talking on the pitch though, something like 'Mr Ball, please meet Mr Back of the Net' would be nice! (Thumbs up ultra positive smiley!)

YatesyVillain, you might be right. I don't moan though, I'm perfect. Tell you what though, the water I bought at Villa the other day wasn't quite the right temperature and the pie was just slightly too hot. :o)

Hopefully come The Peace Cup, Emile will be fully fit and raring, determined to prove to one and all just why MON brought him into the club. His form to date since his arrival from Wigan, has been bitterly disappointing to say the very least.

Better The Peace Cup surely, than to travel to the states only to test ourselves against MLS opposition? Looks like there will be some quality involved in this tournament, that can only be beneficial to us in the long run.
