Martin O'Neill has spoken about new boy Emile Heskey. He told the Mail: 'I’m sure that Emile has a driving ambition to be in that England party and be on that plane to go to South Africa next year and I think this is his chance. Eventually things might not work out, but at this minute it feels really good because I think he’ll be great for us. If Liverpool were one of the teams he might look and see they are not playing a £20million player every single week. They’ve got Fernando Torres, who’s one of the best players in world football, and they’re able to change things round.'
He also says he thinks Heskey will prove to be 'great value....considering the type of fees that have been bandied around this particular January.'
And MON is looking for the 31-year-old, who has plenty of experience lets face it, will bring out the best in our younger players: 'I’ve got no doubts that he will improve us and he’ll help to improve Gabby Agbonlahor and other players around him. I think he should not only be happy in the environment here, but I think he should thrive in it and I think he’ll help the young lads along.'
Watching Sky Sport's excellent Sunday Supplement this morning the reporters were saying that whether Villa want to talk about it or not, we are in the mix for the title and they agreed that the signing of Heskey was a great one and illustrated how far the club has come that an England international would choose Villa over a return to Liverpool where, they said, he feels he has unfinished business.
Looking forward to seeing Heskey make his debut now, he is bound to play Tuesday night v the troubled Portsmouth boys I'd think. Be very interesting to see who is left out as this will surely see the return of a 442 system? My money would be on Steve Sidwell making way at the moment?
