Press Believe Heskey To Be A Great Signing

Martin O'Neill has spoken about new boy Emile Heskey. He told the Mail: 'I’m sure that Emile has a driving ambition to be in that England party and be on that plane to go to South Africa next year and I think this is his chance. Eventually things might not work out, but at this minute it feels really good because I think he’ll be great for us. If Liverpool were one of the teams he might look and see they are not playing a £20million player every single week. They’ve got Fernando Torres, who’s one of the best players in world football, and they’re able to change things round.'

He also says he thinks Heskey will prove to be 'great value....considering the type of fees that have been bandied around this particular January.'

And MON is looking for the 31-year-old, who has plenty of experience lets face it, will bring out the best in our younger players: 'I’ve got no doubts that he will improve us and he’ll help to improve Gabby Agbonlahor and other players around him. I think he should not only be happy in the environment here, but I think he should thrive in it and I think he’ll help the young lads along.'

Watching Sky Sport's excellent Sunday Supplement this morning the reporters were saying that whether Villa want to talk about it or not, we are in the mix for the title and they agreed that the signing of Heskey was a great one and illustrated how far the club has come that an England international would choose Villa over a return to Liverpool where, they said, he feels he has unfinished business.

Looking forward to seeing Heskey make his debut now, he is bound to play Tuesday night v the troubled Portsmouth boys I'd think. Be very interesting to see who is left out as this will surely see the return of a 442 system? My money would be on Steve Sidwell making way at the moment?

Not so sure about Sidwell being dropped JP. Hokey Cokey and Gabby were both hobbling off the pitch on Saturday so I suspect MON's decision will be made for him through at least one injury.

Heskey was excellent for us when he 1st signed, he was unplayable. His form fell away badly though and he was often stuck out on the wing which is ridculous for a target man. His last season was a disaster and I remember one game in the FA Cup at Anfield V Palace when he ran clear from the half-way line with no-one else around him except for Owen to his left. He just kept on running until he was half a yard from the keeper and then just belted it as hard as he could. It bounced off the keepers legs and went 50 feet in the air. That was his Liverpool career over. Hes a great player though and perfect foil for Young and Agbonalhor. I also like the way O'Neill is building a side of mostly English players, the Premiership needs a successful side like that I feel.

I think when Ash is back both Sidwell and NRC should come out of a 4 man midfield making a Young, Barry, Petrov and Milner midfield. Got a nice balance to the midfield and should enable us to break down the "weaker" teams more easily. Will also give us some proper options on the bench, especially with a fit Carew to rotate with Heskey. Maybe CL is realistic!!

Nice comments "Trader", I think Heskey is a totally different player now to when he was with you lot. More intelligent and less likely to fall over (I hope)! Nice to have some positive comments from a Scouser though!!!

Actually, it wasnt his last season sorry, Ive just remembered that was the season before. It did however sum up his time at the club after his 1st season.

MON is making the rest of the prem green with envy over our 90% English team. Should only be Brad and Stan that aren't tomorrow.

Yeah pj, I wouldnt have objected to him coming back to be honest, we need something at Liverpool to spark us off. We look dead on our feet at the moment. Ive never minded Villa but I made my comments because the club deserves them, I wouldnt say them otherwise. I definitely think you've got a chance of CL and I dont think Villa are that far from Liverpool at all. I think Torres and Gerrard just edge it in our favour at the moment.

Agree about Torres and Gerrard, they're your O'Neill and Lerner!!! Think where you could be if you had them!

Yeah, I think we'll have new owners next season and possibly even a new manager. Its a crucial summer for us. Get it right and we can push on and win it next season. Get it wrong and I think we'll be slipping out of the top 4 behind Arsenal United Chelsea and Villa, and maybe even City?!!!!
