Majority Say Villa Will Finish 4th

Vital Villa asked in our last poll, following the slight wobble results wise recently:

Where do you think Villa finish now?

The majority still have the faith we can get 4th with 38% of the vote.

35% think we'll just miss out and finish 5th (see new poll on that very subject!)

15% are fearing a real fall and UEFA Cup football again with a 6th place finish.

3% consider the season doomed saying below 6th.

That leaves the opti's!

5% said 2nd and 4% 3rd.

Our latest poll asks, in a poll suggested by AstonVillaFC 'If we were to now finish 5th, would you view it as...'

So what do you reckon, where do you see us finishing and how would you feel if we ended up 5th?

I know that when i saw Spurs and Man City buying a lot of good players, and Everton already ahead of us in terms of previous finishes in season, that i would have been very happy to finish as the best of the rest. I know that we've done really well thus far, and can see the 4th place as a realistic target, but i think if you looked at it at the beginning of the season you'd be happy enough about 5th. It's wrong to sprint at the beginning of the London Marathon for a few miles and say "I'm fourth, i don't know how i lost it" because we've got to play a full season before we're where we're meant to be. If that turns out to be fifth, then i'll be happy enough.

So, according to your own figures, 53% say we will finish below 4th!! So how do you make out "The majority still have the faith we can get 4th..."?? Shouldn't you be working for the Government with this kind of 'positive spin'? ;-)

You could have Fear, but we all know 5th place is 'failure' this season. 5th place only brings you the Europa Cup - and we all know what the club thinks about that don't we!? Again, the majority of fans think that MON will 'fail' this season - simples!

5th is only failure in some "arm chair" fans eyes Class of 82. Finishing 4th would be incredible and we have given ourselves a great chance but to say finishing 5th is a failure is short sighted to say the least. We're building something at the moment and as long as the fans can see that then I think we'll keep moving in the right direction, i'm guessing you're one of the boo boys!!! Are you telling me if someone asked you 2 years ago how you would feel about finishing 5th you'd say it was a failure? Don't think so!!

5th is all well and good and an improvement on last year e.t.c but i fear we may lose Barry, our most reliable and consistent player. We need him to stay because he's top class, as we all know. Losing him is like a step back. We deserve 4th even if we dont get it. We missed so many opportunities. Just hope Barry can see that

Hi pjvilla. You could have asked me at anytime in the last 30 plus years I have been supporting Villa, and I would have told you that 5th place was the bare minimum we should expect for a club as great as ours. However, now that MON has made it clear that the Uefa/Europa Cup is not worth competing in, I see it as HIS failure if we do not finish in the top 4 - especially with all the advantages he has over previous managers. By the way, you guessed wrong.

Where the hell has o'neil said he doesn't think much of the Europa cup???. What he did was saw the chance (MAYBE the ONLY chance) of finishing 4th this year and keeping players like Barry. Ok so winning the cup meant silverware - but Barry clearly stated a desire to play champions league football - he'll be off if someone like Arsenal,Chelski, Liverpool or Man City (who WILL spend big this summer) and probably be fighting for a top 4 spot too and maybe Spuds also. He probably won't do the same again next year as I think he would have learnt from his mistakes (as all good managers do) but you seem to be predicting next season already. NOT ONE SINGLE fan (Armchair or attending) could possibly have predicted we would be 4th at this time. No matter what happens this season has been a success regardless of 4th or 5th. I have been a fan since 1962 and this is probably the best setup and chance we have of success since Saunders and the Bendalls. It took Saunders time (after we sold Gray) to win the League. We are building - we have to compete with the best and the ones who will join the best (Everton, Man City & possibly Spurs), Tell you what - some fans demand quality signings - they will only come to the top 4 or Man City and Spuds (for the money) - they won't come to Villa just yet - but maybe just maybe if we manage 4th (or higher) they will come to us. And that is what MON is thinking - the future. I have patience (have learned to with Villa and the old regime) some are so impatient. Hindsight is good isn't it.

So can you tell us, Class of 82, of those who are realistically available, who would you rather have as Villa manager? I remember lots of names being bandied around during last summer's window, including Big Sam, Mark Hughes, (probably not Appy Arry lol) and a whole host of other managers who were spending cartloads of cash on 'big name' players. Where are they now? Are you saying you would prefer the big-talking, big-spending failures over the guy who has built something that, in my opinion, is more solid than flash, and who (in case you have missed the fact) has us still sitting in fourth place? The only manager I would swap for MON would be David Moyes, but let me remind you his squads regularly have real dips in form and is pilloried by toffees fans for it. Regardless of where we end up, I will consider this season a success over what has gone before. If you can name a manager you'd rather have, and who would come to B6, tell us who it is.

"NOT ONE SINGLE fan (Armchair or attending) could possibly have predicted we would be 4th at this time." Ummmm..I think we should try and dig out some of the articles/polls at the beginning of this season. I think you will find that you are wrong here! At the end of last season, when we finished in 6th and MON still had a whole transfer window to spend his millions on a decent squad, plenty of people thought we had a good chance of finishing in the top 4. But now that MON has ballsed up 2 transfer windows since then, you are asking us to see 5th as some unbelievable, majestic, front page news worthy, occurrence!! Let's not move the goalposts now please (pun intended), just because MON has scooped all is eggs into one basket and appears to be tripping over!

BobThe Builder. I don't remember asking for MON to go? If I question whether he should have thrown the Uefa Cup, or I deny that the prospect of 5th place is the most exciting thing to happen to me in many years as a Villa fan, does that mean I want him to go? Let's not kid ourselves here, MON is a 'decent' manager and there are a lot worse. But do I think he is 'The Messiah', or even good enough to get us to finish in the top 4? I am still undecided but, if you pushed me, I would say no. Who would be "realistically available" to replace him? Ask me again when he gets the sack/resigns and I will tell you. After all, I'm not Mystic Meg!!

... or Ramos maybe, or Swen? The point isn't whether you have asked for MON to go, or whether you think he's the Messiah (I don't, by the way. I think he's a bloody good, well-respected manager who is doing what I consider to do a good job for my team). The point is that in order to criticise constructively, you must give some alternatives. So many fans post their criticisms on here without offering any replacement policies, players, managers, strategies, etc.

Being a supporter for 100 years doesn't make you a better manager or pundit than someone who has supported for less time. A lot of people expected the Villa to finish top 4 (above Liverpool at that.) MON has done an amazing job but anything less than 4th is failure no matter how far we have progressed and no matter what the pre-season expectations were.

Surely, every time I don't agree with something the manager/players/club owner does or doesn't do, I don't have to give a list of alternative managers/players/club owners? Can't a manager/player/club owner do something wrong without them being kicked out of the club? I'll have a go just for you though. My complaint? - I don't agree with MON throwing away the Uefa Cup. My alternative? - Don't throw away the Uefa Cup. My choice of replacement manager should MON get canned? Hitzfield or Louis Van Gaal. How's that!?

"Kicked out of the club" .LOL. You didn't need to explain the UEFA cup moan as that has been done in your previous posts. You need to move on from the past and look to the future as MON is. The bigger picture is not the FA or UEFA cup this year but the gamble of risking everything for the holy grail of Champs League which would bring success for years by the income and influx of higher quality players. The 2 managers mentioned have never been near the prem so we will never know, (probably why you have hedged your bets by saying their names.) R U AVFC48 IN DISGUISE

But Villan444, you have omitted to post your thoughts on what happens if MON's "gamble" fails. As for the 2 managers that I suggested, I didn't realise there were more 'rules' on whom I'm allowed to suggest. What with Bob only allowing 'realistic' (whatever that is) managers, and you only taking into account Premiership managers I feel I'm being a little restricted in my thoughts and choices. Is that what the 'Messiah squad' do in order to make everyone think that MON is the best/only option we have? I'll reiterate something. I HOPE MON gets us to 4th this year, and beyond in the following years. However, if I am asked for my 'opinion' (some of you might like to look that word up), I would say he won't.

Fair play to you for posting your opinion (at last ;-D.) I would see us finishing below 4th and INDEED Liverpool to be a disaster after the way that we have performed in most games this season. Everyone has an off day or two but we have failed to turn up too many times for my liking and lost 3 points in 2 games at Stoke with seconds to spare. There is no end of the world scenario in my opinion if our wonderous leader falls short come the summer. If however he fails again next year then I might reconsider but Rome wasn't built in a day etc. and we are progressing. I agree with him RE: the cups, which are insignificant in comparison to fourth or above and I am also very impressed with how the closeknit squad has been formed. My main worry now is that Heskey has spoilt everything being the teacher's pet that he is and would have been a great asset had he been bought in the summer but not now. Also, we had a poor run this time last year and then turned it around to go on a run(which most of the armageddon predictors seem to have forgotten) so I am counting on us to do the same again. MON is not above criticism and no-ones perfect, but we could be doing a lot worse even with Randy at the helm

This is crazy that we talking about MON going - he is without doubt the best option for the future and needs to be given at least another 2 seasons to break into the CL position - esp with the money that Man City and Spurs have ... i only see one reason why MON should leave and thats if the special one Jose came out publicly and said he wanted to come to Villa for the challenge - if not MON should stay.... on finishing 4th this season - i think Arsenal will win saturday and then the way they are playing with all their injuries coming back at this crucial time and with our difficult next 4 games - sadly i think it will be next years challenge.... although Arsenal do have to play some tough games at the end of the season .... and its still a long way to go .... thats why im not giving up hope - just yet

I don't think MON is the Messiah, Class, and nor do I think he is beyond criticism. I simply happen to totally disagree with you on two major points: 1) I believe that MON was absolutely right to ditch the UEFA cup in favour of a greater CHANCE (not by any means a certainty) of grabbing a top four place; 2) I am absolutely sick and tired of hearing people insist on labelling anything less than 4th place a 'failure'. At the start of the season (when the UEFA cup was still a great opportunity, which is why we entered it, by the way) we would ALL have taken a top four place in a heartbeat, and you know it. The team are victims of their own success - nobody expected top four, but suddenly MON is a failure if we don't achieve just that. Fickle, or what?

Villan444 - good reply mate! Bob - I understand what you are saying, but I don't agree that "nobody expected top four" at the start of the season. Lot's of people, after finishing 6th last year (and with all the millions MON has at his disposal) expected we might finish top 4 - I remember seeing polls on various forums with this opinion. So, if you think we should all be eternally greatfull to MON for 5th this year, I disagree.
