Villa Hero - Harry Parkes RIP

A press release from Neil Rioch, Chairman of the Aston Villa Former Players Association

It is with much sadness that we announce the passing away of former Aston Villa great Harry Parkes, aged 89, who died peacefully at his home last Wednesday morning after a long illness.

A one-club man who made 345 appearances in eight different positions between 1939-1954, Harry is widely regarded as one of Aston Villa's most popular players of all-time and in 2000, supporters voted him the 1940’s ‘Player of the Decade’. He also sat on Aston Villa's board of directors in the late 1960’s and1970s.

He retired from football in 1955 to concentrate on his successful sports shop in Corporation Street, Birmingham and later formed the Intersport Group before retiring in the mid 1990’s.

sorry, couldn't source a photo which I usually like to add to these sad notifications. Also apologies, would like to but can't turn off the adverts, hence I've given as much space as possible between the end of the article and the video ad.

RIP, another holteender in the sky.

RIP Harry, A true Legend

Bought a lot of my early footballing gear from Harry's shop, way back when. Never saw him play, but remember him well on the Villa board back in the 'real dark' (that actually weren't so 'real dark) days back in the late sixties/early seventies. God Bless Harry.

I remember that shop so well - the decent down the stairs, the Villa pictures. Harry nearly got his hands on the Villa when Bendall was dying but the dreaded Ellis gazumped him. RIP Harry - Villa man through and through and an absolute legend.

I've just sent the article to my Dad in Thailand. He knew Harry really well from when he was on Villa's books. He used to get us tickets for all the big games like Santos and the league cup semi-final against Man Utd. Good guy from what I remember. RIP.
