What We Know About CSKA Moscow

What do we know about CSKA Moscow? Or to give them their full name - Professional Football Club Central Sports Club of Army
Moscow.

Lets start with the basics.

1. They are from Russia
2. They are managed by Brazilian legend - Zico
3. They wear Red and Blue or all White away kits
4. Their nickname is 'Army Men'
5. They were founded in 1911

What about their players who are the threats?

Well........ I was playing Football Manager 2009 the other day and Man City bought Yuri Zhirkov for £20million, so I am guessing he is a good player. Plus defender Sergei Ignashevich has good ratings on Pro Evolution, so I reckon he is good.

I have also heard of Vágner Love, Daniel Carvalho and Keeper Igor Akinfeev, so I reckon they must be good too.

In 2005 they won the UEFA Cup after beating Sporting Lisbon.

So in conclusion, what we have learnt is they have some good players, the are from Russia and that they won the competition only 4 years ago.

I hope you now know a little bit more about our opponents.

They haven't played a single competitive game under Zico yet, so that might be a plus for you, no one knows how CSKA will play under new management. They looked very strong at the end of the Russian season, but failed to win the title, because the first half of the season was quite poor. Zhirkov is definitely the hottest Russian prospect at the moment, and there is little doubt that he'll play for a top club soon. Akinfeev used to be a top prospect too, but his development halted, and he's prone to occasional blunders, especially when he's rushing out of the goal. Ignashevich is nothing special, Vagner Love is a good striker on his day, but he's not very committed. Berezutsky twins are two towering defenders who are both quite good, but also prone to errors.
RussianHammer
Engulfed in facts, maybe a little too much for this time of the day. I've also heard of Vagner Love, he must be their best player.
PTP
They haven't played a competitive match since end of November & Zico has only been their manager since Jan.
Mutley73
Their other nickname is 'Horses', which used to be derogatory, but recently some of the fans embraced the nickname and bring little toy horses to the games.
RussianHammer
Sorry to overload you PTP, you can see my research was extensive. Thanks for the heads up RussianHammer!!
young_jonah
I was hoping that all there good players would be bought in the january transfer window... this did not happen. I think it will be good that they havent played a game yet so should in theory be a bit ***** but you know what villa are like we will make it as difficult as possible for ourselves.
gavcook83
Its got 0-0 written all over it.
young_jonah
They are called Профессиональный футбольный клуб ЦСКА Москва in Russian. Commentators nightmare!!
bazzah
Ah balls! The above didnt quite work! Also, Recently, the club received a major financial infusion from a sponsorship deal with Sibneft, an oil company owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich. Abramovich will not take an ownership interest in the club as he is the current owner of English Premiership power Chelsea and UEFA rules allow only one club controlled by any one entity (person or corporation) to participate in European club competition in a given season.
bazzah
I reckon we'll do them in this leg, full strength team with hopefully a big crowd backing us and the knowledge that this is the one game to do it in before we send our reserves to Russia. I think we'll put 2 or 3 past them.
PTP
Some real old news you've got there bazzah. :) Abramovich sold his stake in Sibneft a long time ago (in 2005, I believe), the company was renamed GazpromNeft, and ceased to be the sponsor of CSKA. They're sponsored by VTB Bank now.

can someone please help- is it true that the match starts at 7pm tomorow?! just realised that that's what avfc.com and my tickets say- i can only make the 2nd half if that's right :(
MrZeus
yes it starts at 7. i will go to the 1st half for you
ric112
Yes it's a 7pm kick off. Ridiculous.
Adam Deuce
sod it!
MrZeus
Does anyone know why freddie didnt play for the reserves last night?
johnmurphy3112
He "felt a bit sore"

If Villa fail to win it will just allow the O'Neill knockers to stand on a perch and shout **** from the highest branch.
col8
you also forgot to mention Alan Dzagoev, perhaps the best russian youngster now.. he scored 8 and assisted 12 times this season and he's only 18.. their main problem is that they haven't played for 2 months and new manager, who perhaps hasn't adapted to the style of CSKA...
Leonax
Thanks RussianHammer, good info. I think this one is too close to call. I think our best advantage is what RH wrote, that CSKA haven't played competitively since November, and this will be there first game with the new manager, who being Brazilian, is almost bound to change their style, which may need time to fine tune! I don't think a draw, a win for either, depending if Villa play like against Ajax, or like against Everton on the weekend!
villa_de
I'm cautiously optimistic, though they are a good side to be honest. Over two legs they will be a test, though hopefully tonight they are still shaking off their vodka hangovers from the close season.
The Usual Suspect
And thanks Russian Hammer for the intelligence report! Much appreciated and enjoyed.
