Villa Boss Looks To Secure Petrov Long Term

Martin O'Neill says that he will focus on getting Stiliyan Petrov signed to a longer deal now the transfer window is over.

Funny old game really, if he'd said he wanted to secure Petrov on a longer deal last year most would have thought him mad but now the Bulgarian international is playing out of his skin and is a key part of our team.

The 29-year-old midfielder, who will be missing tonight against Doncaster as he serves his one match ban for 5 yellow cards but will return for the weekend's game against Blackburn, has just 18 months left on his current deal and is said to be happy to commit long term.

The Villa boss told the Official Site:

'Now that the transfer window is closed, to me, I would say that sorting out Stiliyan Petrov's future will be top priority. I think he has done brilliantly. I don't know how things would go but I would hope he would want to stay at Aston Villa although I would not want to pre-empt things. It will be a top priority to get that sorted out and we will be looking to plan talks.'

Class act, give him a class contract.

Petrov has been our most consistant player this season along with Luke Young. He's earnt a new contratc for sure!
Hitman
Really has earnt it - so much for our Lampard/Gerrard attacking midfielder we all expected. Now he is what McCann SHOULD have been. Really completes our midfield and gives a great balance to the side. He really has done well!!

You should definitly give him a new contract when you watch how much work he puts in.
nu-switz-fc
great ability to score from long-range, haven't seen much of that happen though since he moved intoEPL from the Celtics

don,t know about petrov one good year out of three could just be playing for a new long term contract. and when he gets one slide back to the same old rubbish he gave us before dont forget he was bought as attacing mid fielder .not seen to much attacing yet. mind you he,s a friend of martins so it will happen
one match ban
And "he,s" also been one of our best players?
PTP
But how long will this form last??? He's no spring chicken but i think he's earnt an extension. Our most consistant player in our most consistant season. Shame about the creativity though

moaning again? :)

Fickle fan ;)

no moaning just don,t like all the hype about a average player
one match ban
I must say when Petrov first joined Villa he was nothing but a disappointment to me. MON hyped him up big time but he continued to put in mediocre performances. But in recent months he has really shown his class and become a real force in the Villa midfield. This season he has put in so much hardwork and cemented himself into the starting 11. Given his effort, it's only fair he is rewarded with a new contract. Hopefully he will continue this hard work for many games to come and help the mighty Villa finish the season in one of those Champions League spots

we are a different side without him, him and barry together in the middle give our side a very nice balance.
