So Who Will Villa Sign? Pt 5

The fifth instalment of our summer long gossip column!

We've already had 1420 rumours, arguments and links! So Who Will Villa Sign Pt 4 - Click Here

Tis the end of the season - you might well have noticed, what with the league being won, the fixtures ending and the players packing their bags to go on their holidays.

So here comes the speculation and rumour season, with loads of players about to be linked to Aston Villa and hopefully a good few actually coming to Villa Park in time for the 2007/2008 season.

So back, by popular demand, is the rumours thread on the front page. See a story linking us with a player? Share it with us all. Heard a tenuous link, or seen a player around Villa Park? Let us know! Oh, and although I'll do my best to announce incoming players as soon as possible, if you hear of a signing before I do, wang it on this thread as well.

The January thread ended up with nearly 2000 article comments, spaced over several articles (the limit per article is now 400 after I got it raised, anymore than that and it slows things down too much so I'll change the threads over each time we hit the limit!)

So Far.

It's always frustrating being a Villa fan. Loads of talk and loads of chat amongst us on here but no concrete news still !! But here's my two-penneth anyway: Can we have Gordon, Jagielka (he still ain't gone anywhere), Reo-Coker (at last), SWP and either Defoe or Nugent, I rate them both. Mepham said we wanted signings in by return to training. Isn't that this Wednesday? Put us out of our misery then !!!

Interesting listening to Talk Sport this evening and in particular Ian Wright. Firstly he spoke very highly of MON when it was suggested he could be sacked early into the season. Wrighty thought Villa were top 6. Then a Villa fan come and asked him outright about SWP. Was very diplomatic but Wrighty spoke very highly of the Villa.

Likelihood of him getting sacked was probably suggested by the Ginger Tosser Durham. I mean what are the odds in the bookies? Now should MON completely lose the plot and buy 2 players prior to seasons start and we have a nightmare and are bottom at Christmas maybe those odds will shorten dramatically

The Dutch striker Ridgers has gone to Blackburn and Geremi has signed for Newcastle. Now I don't know if we were after these players but they're gone! The problem with all the links is that it frustrates you because you think you've missed out. Have we? Is MON taking too long? Or are they players MON didn't want. the latter I hope and which I think is true. However, COME ON MON!

I'm not sure on SWP - I mean ok in Jan he decided to stick at Chelsea as he had just got back in the team and why not. Now though towards the end of the season I can't see him featuring in the 1st team with the likes of Cole,Ballack,Lampard,Essien, Robben and Shevchenko. The way Chelsea play he is behind Robben and Shevchenko in that advanced Right Wing Forward position. Would be a great signing for us. One thing though is I bet Man City would love to have him back but would he want to go back. I doubt he would want to play under Sven with the World Cup and the fact he went for Walcott over him.

MON did state he was not interested in Nakamora but there have been countless other rumours that remain unanswered. I'm not expecting the club to comment upon every thread but the rumours that are completely wide of the mark should be dismissed.

Eltoro, you seem to be panicking. There's no point us rushing at these things; as long as we get who we want, on the right terms. The press (not Sky Sports or the BBC I might add) are recycling stories, we can't expect the club to deny links as we've been linked with absolutely everyone! MON has said signings will come, he'll look silly if they don't and we all know that there's issues tying up the simplest of deals. I'm only concerned (as I've said on this thread before) if we buy what I consider 2nd rate players (e.g. Harewood, Koumas). If we are in for that type of player we should stick with Moore, Davis, Cahill and Osbourne because they have more potential.

I don't understand why people are getting excited about SWP, Davies or Reo - If we end up signing theses guys then I'll be dissappointed. We already have players that are as good if not better than these guys. Yes, I'm annoyed at the percieved lack of activity. It is possible though, that the club are conducting business on several fronts whilst the reo saga carries on. It is not as important to get all the transfers in by the time Villa go to the US. What concerns me is the amount of players we actually need. If Davis goes, then we'll about 6 players just to have the same amount of players as last years roster. We all agree that the squad was not big enough (or good enough) last season. I we are to avoid scenes like last Dec/Jan/Feb then surely Mon needs to sign at least 8 players od equal or greater ability. Certainly can't see this happening anytime soon (based on the perceived lack of activity). I'm impatient - thats all folks.

SWP is a quality player, i don't really get the gist of people who don't think he is. My only worry now is the more it goes on the more the expectation builds and the more fantastical rumours continue until whoever MON does buy will not meet the hype. Imagine REO, KOUMAS, HAREWOOD and JUSSI revealed. I would be most underwhelmed.

I'm only going on the morsels of info on the net and they were talking 4m for Davis, 2m for Ridge - I agree with what you say about keeping him. But he wants to leave for the cash rather than fight for his place. Fulham is a step down no mistake. You only have to look at Bouma to see how you can turn things round under MON.

Perhaps O'Neill has got his eye on players who were busy over the summer who need an extra week off. Does this suggest more Euro U21s like Reo-Coker? Or Spanish players? Im clutching at straws here but may that have something to do with the fact the 4th July return to training is shall we say 'understaffed'

This transfer is soon going to be the longest protracted transfer of the summer. Its now been happening for the last four weeks and still no sound coming from VP. I get the impression that the Lerner era is going to be one of no noise until we actually have everything signed and sealed. Although I respect this it is very frustrating for us fans. Particularly when we have Fitzgerald and Mepham saying taht we are going to do this and that before certain dates. BTW this is not a criticism of Mr Lerner because generally I have been extremely pleased with the direction the club has taken since his involvement.

I think there should be more communication from the club now. It must be clear to see that the fans are frustrated by the lack of activity even if it is all building upto something big behind the scenes. This would at least stop our desperate recycling of if and whether we should sign defoe/bellamy/young/koumas/SWP. So if our targets are being priced out the market why not come out and tell us and then at least we would understand the lack of news and would also respect it. The silent reatment just gets us nervous or frustrated.

Eltoro, I totally agree. I think most fans are now beginning to worry about the state of our squad. Although most fans would be glad to see the back of Samuel, McCann, Hendrie and Hughes. We would also have expected to have seen them replaced virtually as soon as they have been sold or released. I am disappointed with the possible sale of Davis, although he rarely played last season I think he has a tremendous amount of potential and played very well in 2005/06. I do trust in MON but am beginning to worry that all deals will occur towards the close of the transfer window, which is four or five matches into the season. This will result in a similar situation to last season when players took time to settle into the club and style of play. Please Mr Lerner and MON prove me worng and get the targets in before the start of the season.

MON & the management have publicly stated the signings will come. The NRC transfer has been protracted as they wanted 9-10m for him and wanted to pull his chain after his "attitude". Eltoro you said you weren't panicking ,but you are. We now have no cover at RB, goalie and midfield (if Davis leaves). So there must be players arriving the question is who and what quality. I'll be disappointed if it's the likes of Koumas and Harewood as they're no bettter than our youngsters. I heard earlier in the month that Luke Young was a done deal, that's probably why we've heard nothing. But the fans want SWP.

tarzan - of the strikers that have been linked to Villa I think we are talking about BELLAMY, DEFOE, NUGENT (if he isnt a Pompy player by this evening), SMITH, DOYLE and HAREWOOD Of these I hate Bellamy as a person and doesnt score enough, it could be argued that we already have two small pacy strikers to similar to Defoe in Gabby and Moore - albeit Defoe scores a lot but who is to say Moore and Gabby couldnt given a run of games up front in a front two, Nugent would be something different but unproven at Premiership (but then again so was D.Bent), Alan Smith looks to be off to Everton but he would be my choice as he is very different from our other 3 strikers and he has that 'fire in his belly', get annoyed with bad decisions and able to get stuck in without acting like a plonker (ie. Bellamy!!). Can he score the 20+ goals a season though??? Doyle would be very good but will he leave Reading? Harewood isnt good enough at all. To be honest if it is any of these players I would think it is most likely DEFOE but I still think it will be someone else from a European side - Alves or Kone??? Perhaps even someone who hasnt been linked yet.

The media are attempting to force MO'Ns hand in the transfer market, by 1. Naming so-called targets and 2. estimating the transfer budget when really they have no clue. Randy will have seen today that Liverpool have signed 1 player for £25m, so for a club that is playing catch-up he'll be able to appreciate that a budget of £25m is simply not enough. Also, for the past few months we have heard the club say that Ian Story-Moore has been scouring the whole of Europe for potential signings, yet the press link us to the regular drib drab and jump on the speculative conveyer belt. Baggie Bill doesn't know his football, his relationship with the club is damaged and I feel that with his journalism, he tends to write in spite. OK he needs column inches filling, so I can understand his frustration, but we're the frustrated fans! However ladies/gentlemen, do not despair - I firmly believe MO'N has identified targets, maybe some of whom have already signed via pre-contract agreements, so in a way if more players (i.e.) Davis are/is sold, we shouldn't get ourselves worried, we've got to have complete confidence in what MO'N does, MO'N know who he wants and will not settle for 2nd best (and nor will Randy - he got Martin on board in the 1st place!). But still it's the lazy journalism that riles me - there can be so much to analyse regarding the beautiful game and our beautiful football club - all we ask for is something interesting and creative to read and not that the NRC deal may/may not go through before close of play today! ****RANT OVER**** In Martin We Trust....

I get blasted for this on Vital Spurs by a few people, I think Defoe is a fantastic STRIKER. He is often known to be selfish but that is what a striker is supposed to be, just look at Owen, V.Nistelrooy etc. He doesn't have the intelligence and overall play of Berbatov, Keane and Bent but aslong as he is scoring goals playing for Spurs then I am happy. IMO he is the most instinctive finisher that Spurs have, a fox in the box if you like. If there is a rebound, Defoe is on hand to slot the ball in to the empty net. Defoe is a confidence player, when he consistently starts he scores goals. I remember over the Christmas period when Keane got injured, he scored like 8 goals in 10 games. I would be very disappointed to see Defoe leave White Hart Lane. However, there is no need for him to leave. With the amount of games Spurs are going to play next year he will have substantial playing time to prove his worth to the team. Should a bid of £10+ million come in for him then the Spurs board should seriously consider it as he only has 2 and a half years left on his current contract and he doesn't look like signing a new one.

Chris Sutton has retired - good luck and happy retirement, he did well for us and added that experience to our front line. He did his job in a very professional manner and if he was 5-10 years younger I would be on this board trying to state how we should go for him!! Ill remember his goal in the 1-0 win away to Everton as the moment I saw 'MON's Villa side'!! After an early goal there is no way DOLs team would have held on to win 1-0 under pressure. PS. he was never really a bluenose!!

Steve Davis has joined Fulham - confirmed on OS. I am gutted by this - I have been a life-long Villa and N.Ireland fan and by far my best game I have ever been to was seeing Villa beat England 1-0. The Vision of Davis to play the chipped through-ball to Healy, just as he became on-side, to score the winner was outstanding. Aaron Hughes captained that night and I wore my Villa shirt (with Davis 12 on the back)in the Kop stand. I was so proud to be a Villa fan then (always am!!) and having O'Neill, an Ulsterman, as manager I was delighted. Now we have lost both players for around £5m I imagine. This is peanuts and I am quite annoyed by these transfers. I know we needed to progress but to say NRC is worth more than double what Davis is - now way. All being equal I would still pick Davis over NRC. Maybe it is blind N.I. patriotism but I am gonna miss seeing him in the claret and blue. He has so much potential - we better have add-ons for future transfers. All the best Steve.

I agree Belfast Villain - but is it still NI patriotism??? It couldnt be - he was cleaned up as player and young player of the year season before last. Would Villa fans be happy is MON sold Barry or Agbonlahor next summer if they have a poor season. Actually let me rephrase that - if they have as good (or slightly better) season than others in their position (Berger or Moore) - I have said this because he was no worse than the player keeping him out of the team i.e. Petrov. One so-so season when your opportunities are limited doesnt make you a bad player. Gardner or Osbourne coming in and playing well in half a dozen games does not make them better than Davis who has 20+ international caps for a team which has jumped 100 places in the rankings and beat Spain, Sweden and England in recent years. Is anyone else thinking along the same lines or is it just us Ulstermen!!!???!!! The stuff about him kicking up a fuss I find hard to believe - I am mates with his old schoolmate who catches up with him when Davis is back in Co. Antrim (genuine - this isnt the usual bull with my sisters cousins mate etc) and he has spoken of how he doesnt want to leave Villa and gets on great with MON.

05/07/2007 14:47:00

I think we're all getting a bit carried away here. I'm disappointed Davo has gone, will be a great player one day. Reo-Coker has been bought to replace McCann and is a better player so therefore improves the team/squad. Davis didn't play much last year due to Petrov and Gardner, and the same scenario would probably have unfolded this year had he stayed, so he went for first team football and good luck to him. As somebody has already posted, we have four players vying for two central midfield berths, assuming we play 4-4-2, as well as Osbourne. I think there's still the possibility of Koumas as well, which may explain Davo being allowed to go. The Carew thing is nonsense and I'm sure that Porto are just chancing their arm. If anything were to come of it i.e. an official approach, I'm sure MON will answer them in two words. I can't believe we've landed our first target and people are still moaning. Chill out and get some perspective..........

05/07/2007 14:56:00

To put all of this in perspective. I think most Villa fans are disappointed with losing Davis because he came through the youth ranks and consequently is viewed as one of our own. However, if he wasn't going to pay next season and I don't think he would then it is the best move for both him and Villa. As it stands Davis would have been a squad player and if we had sold him next summer we would have got £2 million. Therefore it has to be viewed as good business, even though I do think he will go on and play well for Fulham. So Steven go with the best wishes of every Villa fan and we look forward to seeing you come back next season, having a good game but being on the losing team. Good luck.

Quote from Mr. Potato-head: "Even in the 12 months we've been out of the Premiership we've noticed a change. Our closest rivals (Aston Villa) have spent £8.5million on one player (Nigel Reo-Coker). That's our entire budget. "I'm green with envy but that's not possible for me. I'd love to be in a different market but, although we are not, I still think we can be competitive" What a prat - he is covering his back for relegation already. Im also not happy with the use of the word 'closest', we are the 'nearest' rivals but closest suggests in terms of ability. We are nearest to Birmingham City F.C. But their 'closest' rivals are Sunderland and Derby. Our 'closest' rivals are Newcastle, Spurs and Everton!!!

The press conference was in the players lounge at the training ground. The delay was because the deal nearly fell through. NRC had a clause that he would get half a mill if he kept them up and left. The contract didn't mention this and so Villa were trying to get it amended at the last hour. In the end NRC had to forfeit the money to allow the deal to go through. Shows you the mentality and character of the Wham board. Bu then again nothing surprises you from Wham these days does it.

Particularly if Barry is going to play in the middle with Reo-Coker. I would like to see us sign Luke Young, Wright-Phillips, Jussi and Yakubu. I feel that these additions would result in us becoming a real force next season. Young isn't spectacular but he is solid, a confident Wright-Phillips is as good a winger as there is, Jussi is one of the best keepers in the league and Yakubu would score bags of goals with the service from our wide players.
