'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Villa Midfielder Going Nowhere

Patrik Berger, as expected, will not be departing Villa Park on a loan deal this summer despite interest from Oldham Athletic.

The Czech midfielder, who surprised many Villa fans by returning from Stoke City with a number of inspirational performances signed a one year contract extension, and Martin O'Neill does not see any reason to let the player go out on loan again.

Oldham claimed last week that they had started discussions in brining the Czech International in on loan but had their offer rejected, something backed up by the Aston Villa boss on avfc.co.uk:

'It's the first I've heard about it. Patrik Berger has agreed a new one-year contract and I'm delighted about that.

'There's no chance of him being sent out on-loan - absolutely no chance of that.

'He did enough over the last few months of the season to earn another deal and he's very much in our plans for next season. I just don't know where that story came from.'

Berger adds some composure and creative class, the long range shooting is an added bonus pity we didnt have him back when he was a little quicker but still class

Certainly worth having around the place in terms of passing his experience on to the youngsters like Maloney and Young. Still got what it takes to come on and change a game also.

What a waste of space and time. Why would he sign for us and then go out on loan??? Just because there is no confirmed transfer activity the papers have to write about non events. UTV

The plot deepens. MON knowing nothing about it clearly indicates that despite Oldham Athletic's claims, no such approach ever took place. What a wierd little story this was from day one. Patrik still has qualities to benefit AVFC through the remainder of his contract, and while he wont be a major player for us next season, he still has the ability to do a more than useful job for the club.

Cant see any club extending a players contract by a year then sending him out on loan for the season, a complete made up story on Oldhams part. Maybe the story shifted the supporters focus away from real issues.
