The Birmingham Evening Mail had a report yesterday suggesting Northern Ireland midfielder Steven Davis has held talks with Martin O'Neill and wants to know what their valuation of him is.
O'Neill has been at pains to say that players such as Davis aren't on the transfer list but that he wouldn't stand in the way of any player who wanted to leave.
According to the Mail Fulham, Reading, Manchester City and Middlesbrough are all interested in Davis. Manchester United were strongly linked last summer after Davis enjoyed a virtual ever present season under the managerialship of David O'Leary, however the season just gone was a far cry with injury and lack of form hampering his first team chances.
Maybe this is just paper talk but the rumours have been around for a while with Davis apparently wanting to play centrally and O'Neill preferring him to be out wide. I guess if Davis see's players like Craig Gardner push in front of him in the pecking order and new players like Nigel Reo-Coker possibly arriving, he might well want to move to 'guarantee' first team football. Maybe he is a great prospect and we should keep him, or maybe on some of his performances of last season, he isn't quite as hot as we all thought?
Would love to see him go out on loan for a season before allowing him to leave permanently, would be awful to see a future gem do well for another club but if he doesn't prove himself too tasty on loan, then no real loss?
Talking about Nigel Reo-Coker, reports today suggest that we might have competition for his signature from Manchester City who have a brand spanking new owner Thaksin Shinawatra. Another big club in waiting with another big monied owner. Football really is going to become even more a rich mans playground isn't it?
I reckon NRC will come to Villa, he is team mates with our England U21's like Gary Cahill, Ashley Young and Gabriel Agbonlahor(when he picks up the phone!). There, that's convinced me at least, watch this space, he'll sign this week.
