Mark Delaney Stepping Up Fitness

Mark Delaney is close to a return but not a return to contract talks!

The Welsh right-back is stepping up his training at Bodymoor Heath and aiming to be able to train with a ball in the not to distant future.

He said: 'I'm going in three times a week and I'm continuing my strengthening programme jogging in the swimming pool. Things are going well and I'm approaching the date when I can start running again, which is the middle of the month. So the timescale is getting shorter so I can see a bit of light at the end of the tunnel now. I've spoken to the physios in the United States and they have told me that there might be some swelling around the knee. But touch wood, there hasn't been any yet, so that's good news.'

'I am upping the weights on my leg to get the strength back in my knee and it's getting tougher. I've been doing this for eight weeks now and it's getting tough but hopefully in the long run it will be beneficial.'

Adding on the official site: 'I'll be starting jogging in the middle of June and I'll be starting doing football activities in the middle of July, so hopefully I'll get the answers I want. There's no reason to be concerned but there's still the thought at the back of my mind as to how it will react to what I can and can't do so I'm still nervous, but I'm confident at the moment. As regards my contract, I need to find out how I react to running first.'

'Martin O'Neill has said I need to make sure I'm doing my programme right and when I get out there, we'll sit down and discuss my future.'

Be like new signing if he comes back :o) Seriously though, be great to see him back in Claret and Blue as there are few better than MD when he's fit and he's been a loyal servant to the club - remember that most of the bad injury run he's had was not due to being injury prone but due to being on the wrong end of some bad tackles and that has to be a sign of his commitment to the cause, I just wish he was a bit more bloody carefull :o)
Villain Of The North
Spot on VOTN Delany at full fitness can match any right back you care to name.Love to see him play a full season next year (If refs protect him from the butchers).
Willa
Have you been watching a different player to me ? Good last ditch tackler but can`t pass a ball 5 yards.
ASPINALL
No you've been watching a different player. Delaney is defensively class and good going forward. Good luck to him and to , as a result, us hopefully.
stennyvilla
Sorry,i must be mistaken
ASPINALL
The sooner he is back the better. Delaney is class.
jonah
I agree with Aspinall. Maybe a decent squad player but we should be looking to bring in new blood with some quality and who can pass a ball.
Hoss The Villain
I've got to say I'm in the Aspinall/Hoss camp on this one. Delaney is a journeyman pro at best. Would he get into the team of one of the top 4? No. Therefore he is the type of player we should be trying to replace. Admittedly he is much better than Bardsley though.

...delaney was our player of the season a few years back. when fit, he is awesome. no he wouldn't get in the top 4 sides but right now he can do a great job for villa. personally i think the guy is a legend, so down to earth and professional. he deserves more respect
ric112
No way should he be given a new contract.
Dannygav
I`d offer him a contract as he can do a job,but he`s only a half-decent squad player in my opinion.
ASPINALL
Keep on fighting Mark. The claret and blue loyals are 100% behind you, as perhaps more importantly, so are MON and the club. Its going to continue to be a long, tough fight, but hang in there. As to whether he'll make a comeback good and strong enough to see him in contention for a first team place again, well who knows?
glensider
Hopefully he'll make the pre-season North American tour. If he does, we'll have a good idea as to where he stands in MON's thinking.
