Inter Milan Not Coming To Villa

Inter Milan not coming to Villa - but Internazionale are!

This may be considered fussy, but put the boot on the other foot. My son lives in Italy with a flat full of the supporters of Milan's two teams and they are all continually incensed with the British press referring to a non-existent team called Inter Milan.

The 2 teams are Milan and Internationale (all Italian teams are also AC in front in the same way we have FC after). To call Internationale Inter Milan is effectively giving them the extra name of their dreaded rivals - even if it is the city they come from, and is on a par with calling us Aston Villa Birmingham City. Milan are Milan and Internationale are Internationale and they should not be run together.

There are other examples of course of calling teams by a British version of their name such as Bayern Munich instead of Bayern Munchen, but Inter Milan is not a British translation - it is just wrong. If you look in any paper or football programme in Italy then Internationale can be abbreviated to 'Inter' but never never never add Milan.

That's just petty !
HolteEnder43
Thought it was called off for a sec. Glad Inter Milan are still coming to Villa Park

no its actually internazionale. sorry to be petty hehe
ric112
not totally sure it is petty, I found it quite enlightening, I've always called them inter milan, but I wouldn't like us called aston aston villa or the like!
The Fear
But presumably calling them Internazionale from Milan is perfectly ok It wouldn't bother me if some foriegn journo wrote "Aston Villa from Birmingham" Logically thats where the Inter Milan came from its just a shortening of "Internazionale of / from Milan", its lazy but thats all it is Its like someone complaining about someone writing "The Birmingham club" when writing about the Villa

Although a minor point I think it was very well put and also very relevant. As stennyvilla indicated how would we feel if we were called Aston Villa Birmingham. In Italian terms it would be like calling Juve, Juventus Turin (Torino). It shouldn't happen.
voiceoftheholte
It's a fair point. In the same way that neither Glasgow Celtic nor Glasgow Rangers exist.

Barstool, that really worried me for a second then. Once I realised what you were on about though, I found the info quite interesting. However if you ever scare me like that again I'll hunt you down. LOL.

Excellent point Stennyvilla, very interesting. Also I think there has been more Villa players to play in Italy than any other British club.

Wow, didn't know that. So how come on their official site the header reads Internazionale Milano, and their Logo reads FCIM ?
JPiggy
ok ok calm down, its like calling Bham abd Baggies West Birmingham Heath! either way they're both 5hit and things are going to stay that way lol

http://www.inter.it/aas/societa/organigramma?L=en This is the 'club' page on their official site. Appears that Inter Milan may not be wrong after all??
voiceoftheholte
they will always be Inter Milan to me
Christo
It's inter milan then just to ***** them off.

I stand by my Italian based advice. I also just viewed the link above and clicked endlessly to view all main references elsewhere within the site which simply state "Inter" or "Internazionale". The web-page reference to Internazionale in bold and Milan not in bold I presume is to distinguish from other Internazionale listings on the w.wide web and is admittedly an acknowledgement to distinguish them clearly as THE Internazionale from Milan. This does not mean it is their name - it is not what the fans and the press and the league tables call their team - which remains Inter. Anyway this is all very close season, and whatever their name there is only one name that really matters - Aston Villa FC pride of the Midlands and Planet Earth!
stennyvilla
who cares
ric112
The legal incorporated name of the club (per Wikipedia) is: Football Club Internazionale Milano SpA Per http://www.inter.it/aas/societa/organigramma?L=en, they are "F.C. Internazionale Milano".

Certainly news to me. I've known them as Inter Milan for 40 plus years. See, you're never too old to learn.
