Sunday Mercry article on “Villa Star Jailed”

The Aston Villa Supporters Trust strongly condemns the Sunday Mercury's coverage of a recent court case in which former Villa reserve player Matthew Ghent was imprisoned for assault.

The newspaper advertised the story around Villa Park prior to Saturday's game with West Ham as 'Villa Star Jailed' and much was made in the paper of Ghent's connections with the club, despite him having left Aston Villa's employ several years before the incident for which he was imprisoned took place. Trust spokesman Neil Heitzman says, 'The Sunday Mercury regularly runs stories with the seeming aim of discrediting Aston Villa. These have ranged from inaccurate to risible, and we believe that the club should consider withdrawing press privileges that they offer to other, more responsible, news media.'
