To Bellend Or Not To Bellend?

Reports have linked us to Liverpool striker Craig Bellamy for what seems like 30 years now. These reports seem to be increasing as rumours suggest Rafa Benitez is about to have a clear out at Anfield to freshen things up for another Premiership (failed) challenge next season!

Due to the fact he is one of the fringe players for the Reds, Villa are again being linked to the former Coventry and Blackburn player with reports suggesting Martin O'Neill will put in an offer for the Wales international who played for him on loan at Celtic.

Bellamy certainly gets a mixed reaction and appears to be coming a journeyman, unable to settle at any club and often causing unrest in the dressing rooms and on the golf courses, just ask John Arne Riise!

Mark Hughes is also said to be interested in taking him back to Blackburn. Bellamy apparently only left Blackburn due to the fact he was a Pool fan as a kid - or some other load of tripe like that!

So what do you reckon, to Bellend or not to Bellend?

He made 23 starts for Liverpool, 4 sub appearances and was replaced 12 times. In that time he scored just 7 Premiership goals and bagged two in Europe. On top of that he has been known to be injury prone. On the flip side, he has pace to burn and is a nasty snarling player, the sort Villa have lacked for years. Hmmm, tough being a manager isn't it!?

Our latest poll asks if you'd sign him or not.

It's all down to whether he wants to join us. With him, it's not just about the money. He actually took a wage cut to join Liverpool. We need a bit of bite, my only question mark is over his injury record

MON worked with him at Celtic, we need a Mr Nasty, it looks like a done deal - good enough for me.

I really hope we don't get him. We already have a striker with pace to burn and I would hate Gabby's development to be hindered by Bellamy. If we are looking at another forward surely we can do better. Also the point about him being a nasty snarling player is true and we could do with a bit more aggression at times, but surely aggression against the oposition and not your own team mates? For me he just carries too much baggage.

If were freshening things up for another "failed" premiership bid next year what are your complete waste of club building up to? Perhaps another FAILED bid for a 10th place finish is it. As for you tarzan and your brain dead bin dipper comment, why dont you go back to swinging from the trees with the rest of the monkey's. You put Darwin's theory of evolution to shame because i think you might actually be de-evolving. Were did you go to school? Clown college? Bet you got an "F" in custard pie throwing.

I reckon for the amount of money Bellamy would cost us, we could have a punt for Robbie Keane. Plus there are only four teams that have CL football three of which seem to have a fairly settled strike force. And anyway does the fact we don't have CL football mean we should buy someone for the sake of it, someone who lasted one season for a club we are hoping to be challenging in the next two years?

I am not sure on this one. Reputation????? Fitness???? But has scored goals!!!!!! And has worked with M'ON before!!!!! Sometimes you have to look above what the press would have you believe but even then there is no smoke without fire. I think it comes down to what M'ON wants to do and as it currently stands, if he thinks that Bellend would be a good buy from Redscouse, then that is good enough for me. Would prefer Luca Toni or Darren Bent though.

I would much rather we go for Darren Bent. He is a better goalscorer and you could play Gabby with Bent, but I don't think you could play Bellamy with Gabby.

He is versatile and could cover left- back, left midfield and also has an eye for goal. Maybe signing him would allow GB to finally settle on a position and develop into an even better player? Personally I would love to see GB stay in the middle where I thought he was really impressive towards the end of the season.

I say go for Craig Bellamy. I'd have no hesitation. Bit of a nasty boy? Yes, would have to agree. But, and here's the but, he's the type of player that we've been lacking, and would definitely add to our team. From what we read it will come down to a fight between Mark Hughes and our very own MON for his services. Go for it Martin.

agbonlahor is a great young player in the bellamy mould, but has much more potential (potentially). lets develop agbonlahor and if we buy a striker, make sure they are of the best quality we could possibly obtain.

holteender43. If that is what you have heard you really do need to change your sources. And as for upsetting the dressing room, do you really think that M'ON would sign a player who he has managed before if that was going to happen????? Samtozer, I do not know about Matty Taylor and wether he is good or bad. He has scored some great goals but if that was the only criteria then Hitlesperger would be World Player of the Year. I do know that if he was good enough then Pompey (who like Villa are trying to improve) would not be selling him.

Apparently Taylor wants to move further north as he is based in Oxfordshire (according to B'ham Post). Getting back to Bellamy, if we bought him we would have Gabby, Luke, Ashley Young, Maloney and Bellamy as potential strike partners to Carew, accepting that MON likes to play with a target man and mobile partner. What happens if Carew is injured? We would have the smallest, but admitedly quickest forward line in the prem. My point is if we are going to spend big on a forward wouldn't it be more prudent to sign cover/competition for Carew?

when are people going to learn about robbie keane, tottenham are never going to sell him. Why the hell would they? They've never been a selling club anyway. I think people need to put personality differences with Bellamy aside, because he'd make a great pairing with Carew.

If we are going to improve, then we have to be in there competing for the likes of Bellamy. Gabby still has a lot to learn, a lot to prove. Will he be even as successful next season as he was this one just past? Who knows, but why take that chance? If Gabby etc are good enough, they wont be held back. They'll be forcing themselves into the starting line up each week. MON has worked with Bellamy, so he has some idea about his supposed faults. If MON thinks that he will improve our strike force (our main weakness this last campaign) then that will do for me.

I agree with some of your sentiments that Gabby isn't yet the finished article and could be seen as a gamble, but just imagine for a moment that Villa decided to sell him. There would be a stampede for his signature from most of the other sides in the prem. But as you say, if he's good enough he'll play. I just think that spending 8 million on a problem player who is being moved on after just one season by a team we would hope to be competing with in the near future, is just as big a gamble. Regarding our strike force being our main problem last term, MON started with Angel and Baros both of whom were moved on and replaced. Unfortunately January isn't ideal as new players need time to settle, but when they did I thought we looked pretty good and on occassion, awesome. I still think covering Carew would be more sensible and that for the money he would cost, we could do better than Bellamy.

Jon.H - You say of Liverpool 'a team we would hope to be competing with in the near future' Quote. We are years away from Liverpool and they will kick on again now and only attract players we can dream of. If Bellemy signs a 3 or 4 year contract and takes us on to the next level (top 6) then perhaps we will then be able to attract better players than him. Until then I think we will only be able to attract this level of player.

Gazvilla, fair point about attracting a certain level of player to take us on to the next level, I agree. In my opinion I just hope it's not this particular player. Today the rumour mill is suggesting 12 million which would be ridiculous. If we are in that ballpark I would prefer taking a punt on Darren Bent. My comment about challenging Liverpool in the near future harks back to the board's stated aim of competing for champions league football in five years which would mean competing with Liverpool etc. but you are totally right in saying that they are light years ahead of us at present. Just shows the size of the task facing us, but it's going to be exciting to see how we go!!
