Villa Right-Back Still Has Chance

Villa Right-Back Still Has Chance

Good news for Wales international and Aston Villa right back Mark Delaney.

Martin O'Neill has given the 30-year-old the summer to prove his fitness before deciding on what to do with him despite his contract coming to an end in June.

Delaney had surgery by the same surgeon that salvaged Martin Laursens career, Dr Richard Steadman, and it is hoped that has cured Delaney's knee problems.

Martin O'Neill told the official site:

'Mark's contract ends in June but I will look at this and I think it is only right we should be looking after him until he is fit. If Mark's current programme goes according to plan, he would be hoping to be joining in with us towards the end of July - and I am happy for that to be the case. Then we will be in a better position to assess what is happening with him, hopefully by the end of July to mid-August.'

He also adds that he feels it is Villa's 'duty' to do the right thing by Mark and make sure his recovery is aided, even if a new contract isn't offered.

Such a blow for the Welshman, when fit there aren't many better right backs in the Premiership, would be superb to see him recover and play a part in the Villa's future.

Wonder if a pay as you play deal could be sorted?!

He is quality and could add some very good support to Aaron Hughes and Phil Jagielka (hopefully).

Always liked the guy, he a great tackler and leader. His attacking isnt the best but id prefer to have him instead of Hughes.

The club has stood by him, and the ball is now well and truly in Mark's court. A hard graft of a summer lays ahead of him, but at the end of it there could be the opportunity of a new deal. A fully fit Mark Delaney would be a plus. Still feel we need another right full back to complement him even if he should be around next season, but no doubt about it, on his day MD was as accomplished a right back as was ever on view anywhere else in the premiership.

Yeah of course - Hayer will shoot us into Europe! I think most people would love Jagielka joining the revolution! You think of a team with more options at right back IF we sign another such as Jagielka, Luke Young etc. Having a player of that quality with Hughes, Delaney, O'Hallaron (if he is as good as the rumours say - although he is versatile I think he prefers leftback) and even Mellberg all looking for a first team slot. And anyway villasw "U STUPID ******" (hey look, I can make random insults too!) I think the days of us signing £500K players are over.

Look at how Berger and Laursen have recovered from long tem injury nightmares. If we can get Delany fit again he will be a great asset. I still like the thought of Micah Richards at VP though.

I disagree with you over the £500K players Deano. If you spot a potential superstar and manage to get them for that sort of money then the club should go for it. Platt, Yorke and Delaney cost t'uppence ha'penny in todays terms, but have produced £18 million and some great years service. The best £500K example though is Anelka for the Arse. He was then sold two years later for £23.5 million.

Still think that Hughes at Rovers will be interested if he regains full fitness

The club are on a win win situation with regards to MD! If he gets fit and proves his fitness Villa have a good player returned to the squad if he is unlucky enough not to regain his fitness then the club have lost nothing. I hope he gets back to full fitness and plays football if not for the Villa them someone else. After the Injuries he has suffered over the years the guy deserves a break.
