Villa's Uefa Cup Hopes Need Win At Bolton

This may be grasping at straws but fuelled by the confidence of recent performances always say you never know.

The fact is that if Spurs can take 5 points from their last 3 games (they still have 3 games left starting at Charlton tomorrow, home to Blackburn on Thursday and home to Man City on Sunday) and if Reading win at Blackburn next Sunday, then they will both guarantee qualifying for the UEFA Cup - providing Villa BEAT Bolton.

From all accounts as I understand it Reading and Spurs are our only rivals at the top of the fair play league and their qualification should leave Villa top of the English fair play league of non-Euro qualifiers and into the lucky 2 out of the hat draw for a UEFA cup place.

So we need to beat Bolton - and cleanly with no nasty red cards. Some fans make think Euro qualification would come too soon for Villa - but I would take it and I guess so would the players - including the ones we might want to tempt here over the Summer.

Anyway, however remote the chance, at least it's something else to play for next Sunday alongside our battle for 10th place. It makes Villa's the most important game in the country next week - mind you it always is anyway!

The top country (Sweden it seems likely) will get an automatic entry, then 2 others get picked out of the hat. This is how Man City qualified a few years back, but with Joey Barton and Michael Ball I don't think fair play and Man City are associated together anymore!

OK so there's 10 countries going into the hat, and 2 get a place.. We have a 1 in 5 chance - if we don't have any fouls. Anybody know when the draw takes place?

Bit desperate, getting in this way. Don't think Reading will win at Blackburn. I'd rather us concentrate on next season and have a better run in the domestic cups.

We were promised a transfer thread last week? Interesting comments from MON & Lawro post match - the summer signings will be crucial. Unfortunately we need Europe to attract the next level of players.

Uefa cup is crap. Not really to fussed on being in it. Just leads to more games against crap oppostion at times and more risk of burn out and injury.

Cant quite see how/why you can describe the UEFA Cup as 'crap' iomvilla. We either want/need European competitive football or we dont, and apart from the Champions League, the UEFA Cup is all that's out there right now. The UEFA Cup gives you the opportunity to taste and learn the art of competive Euro football, and provides you with experience and grounding to hopefully take part eventually in the Champions League. To describe it as crap is an insult to some extremely quality teams who in building for a future tilt at Champions League glory find themselves in the UEFA Cup.

Sorry point well and truly taken Glensider. I believe I was over critical of the UEFA cup. I know champions league is out of reach in the near future. I just think all them extra games can really hamper your league progress and injuries and depending on summer signings we haven't got the biggest squad. Newcastle could be an example of this or Middlesborough last season both suffered from poor league form. Europe is Europe though and before the champions league the UEFA was harder to win than the European cup due to more than 1 team from each country being entered. Perhaps the over use of "crap" above was not the best but just my ten pence worth at 6am on bank holiday with daughter screaming for her shreddies!!! Sorry guys.
